Nationals | Shawn Kelley anointed the guy

Fri, 17 Jun 2016 07:03:48 -0700

Washington Nationals RP Shawn Kelley was named the interim closer while RP Jonathan Papelbon (intercostal) is out.

Fantasy Tip: Kelley has a lengthy injury history of his own, but his numbers can be staggering when he's healthy. He has 35 K's in 25 2/3 innings and a 0.82 WHIP, which spells success in the short term. He's worth owning everywhere.

Nationals | Shawn Kelley earns second save

Fri, 17 Jun 2016 05:01:36 -0700

Washington Nationals RP Shawn Kelley recorded his second save in as many games Thursday, June 16, as the Nationals beat the San Diego Padres 8-5.

Fantasy Tip: It looks like the Nationals may have found a closer. Manager Dusty Baker was adamant about wanting a set closer and Kelley has stepped up to the plate. As long as Jonathan Papelbon is not available, Kelley should be picked up for all formats.

Nationals | No set closer with Papelbon out

Wed, 15 Jun 2016 11:58:25 -0700

Washington Nationals manager Dusty Baker isn't committing to one fill-in closer with RP Jonathan Papelbon (intercostal) on the disabled list. However, Baker likes RP Shawn Kelley, but the Nationals must be careful with the reliever who has had two Tommy John surgeries.

Fantasy Tip: Kelley is the favorite to see most of the save chances with Paps out, and he pitched 1 2/3 frames for his first save of the year Monday night. Kelley is having a fine year with a 2.70 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 34 K's in 23 1/3 innings. Felipe Rivero, Blake Treinen and Sammy Solis all could be options in the ninth if Kelley is rested, though, but they're purely speculative pick-ups in much deeper leagues if you're desperate for saves.

Nationals | Shawn Kelley nails down save

Mon, 13 Jun 2016 19:59:09 -0700

Washington Nationals RP Shawn Kelley picked up a five-out save Monday, June 13, against the Chicago Cubs, working 1 2/3 perfect innings while striking out four batters in the 21-pitch effort. RP Jonathan Papelbon (undisclosed) was held out by manager Dusty Baker due to soreness.

Fantasy Tip: Kelley was dominant for his first save of the season, while Papelbon has struggled recently. Baker has said Papelbon's job is safe, but after this performance it's a good idea for those in NL-only fantasy leagues, especially owners of Papelbon, to head to the waiver wire and spend some FAAB budget on Kelley.

Nationals | Jonathan Papelbon likely to stay

Mon, 11 Jan 2016 09:06:44 -0800

Washington Nationals RP Jonathan Papelbon is expected to remain with the Nationals, especially after the team just traded RP Drew Storen to the Toronto Blue Jays. General manager Mike Rizzo hasn't ruled out a trade of Papelbon, but the GM spoke highly of his closer on a conference call Saturday, Jan. 9. "We see Papelbon as being one of our late-inning relievers. He's been very effective at it his entire career, including last year, except for the last portion of the season," Rizzo said. Papelbon is guaranteed $11 million in 2016. RPs Shawn Kelley, Yusmeiro Petit and Trevor Gott were mentioned by Rizzo as possibilities for the eighth-inning setup role to Papelbon.

Fantasy Tip: Despite all of the talk surrounding Papelbon's fracas with Bryce Harper at the end of last season, he remains one of the better closers in the league and is on a winning club. Now that Storen is out of the picture, Papelbon is an even safer fantasy closer as a top-tier ninth-inning fireman.

Nationals | Shawn Kelley could serve as setup man

Sat, 09 Jan 2016 12:29:57 -0800

Washington Nationals RP Shawn Kelley is likely to move into the setup role vacated by Drew Storen after he was dealt to the Toronto Blue Jays, according to general manager Mike Rizzo. He also mentioned RPs Trevor Gott, Felipe Rivero and Blake Treinen as other pitchers who could vie for the eighth-inning job.

Fantasy Tip: Kelley should be of interest to fantasy owners who participate in leagues that use the holds category and he could see an occasional save opportunity on days when Jonathan Papelbon is unavailable. He went 2-2 with a 2.45 ERA in 53 games for San Diego last season, with 63 strikeouts over 51 1/3 innings, and should be targeted in the later rounds of NL-only leagues.

Yankees | Adam Warren likely staying put

Tue, 17 Jun 2014 18:12:38 -0700

New York Yankees RP Adam Warren is a potential prospect to join the depleted starting rotation, but manager Joe Girardi likes him in the bullpen for now. "Warren's been a vital part of our bullpen," Girardi said Tuesday, June 17. "He really stepped up when (RP Shawn Kelley) went down. He's a guy that can give you multiple inning down there, but as I said, we'll continue to evaluate our staff."
