Astros | Luke Gregerson picks up save

Wed, 18 May 2016 21:39:23 -0700

Houston Astros RP Luke Gregerson pitched a scoreless ninth inning against the Chicago White Sox Wednesday, May 18, to pick up his ninth save of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Gregerson had blown two straight save opportunities before earning the save Wednesday. He likely will keep the closer job for the time being but is a risky option for owners because he could lose the job if he has another tough outing.

Astros | Luke Gregerson blows another save

Tue, 17 May 2016 23:47:26 -0700

Houston Astros RP Luke Gregerson blew his second straight save chance Tuesday, May 17, and it was his third blown save in 11 chances. RP Tony Sipp picked up the save in extra innings.

Fantasy Tip: When you consider that the team essentially handed Ken Giles the job when they traded for him in the offseason, it doesn't look like Gregerson has much rope. Gregerson's 4.08 ERA is high, but he has a solid 1.08 WHIP and hasn't allowed a home run. Things could turn around, and they'll have to if he wants to remain the closer. Giles hasn't been good this year, but he has pitched four consecutive scoreless innings with five K's. He's probably still ahead of Sipp and his 4.11 ERA in the pecking order because at 32, you kind of know that Sipp is what he is. Giles has wipeout stuff and may be worth picking up.

Astros | Luke Gregerson picks up save

Sat, 14 May 2016 05:35:43 -0700

Houston Astros RP Luke Gregerson pitched a scoreless ninth inning against the Boston Red Sox Friday, May 13, to pick up his eighth save of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Gregerson has allowed four runs over his last five appearances but appears to still be the team's closer for the time being. He is a fine fantasy option as long as he continues to close games but would lose some value if he is replaced at some point.

Astros | Luke Gregerson picks up save

Sat, 16 Apr 2016 05:12:57 -0700

Houston Astros RP Luke Gregerson pitched a scoreless ninth inning against the Detroit Tigers Friday, April 15, to earn his third save of the season.

Fantasy Tip: Gregerson has pitch very well as the closer this season and has allowed only one hit in his four appearances. Gregerson should continue to be the team's closer and is a must-start player in all leagues since he will have plenty of save opportunities.

Astros | Manager talks Luke Gregerson

Mon, 04 Apr 2016 12:03:43 -0700

Updating a previous report, Houston Astros RP Luke Gregerson's closer experience, and manager A.J. Hinch's familiarity with Gregerson dating back to their time with the San Diego Padres was a major factor in Gregerson being named the "primary closer."

"He's a pretty good closer," Hinch said of Gregerson Monday, April 4. "He did a pretty good job last season on a pretty good team. He has a slow heartbeat. He's got a real feel on how to pitch. His calmness in the intense moments are critical, particularly there at the end of a game."

Fantasy Tip: Gregerson is a high-end grab from the waiver wire after saving 31 games in 2015 with a respectable 3.10 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 59 strikeouts through 61 innings. Don't ignore Ken Giles, though. He could find his way into ninth-inning situations at some point this season, and his strikeout volume and strong ratios are valuable in most mixed leagues.

Astros | Luke Gregerson the closer

Mon, 04 Apr 2016 06:42:45 -0700

Houston Astros RP Luke Gregerson was named the "primary closer" by manager A.J. Hinch Monday, April 4, over RP Ken Giles.

Fantasy Tip: It's a bit of a curveball because Giles has superior swing-and-miss stuff. Gregerson went undrafted in a lot of leagues because Giles was the favorite for the gig, and he needs to be picked up universally. Giles falls back to an RP3 with elite strikeout potential.

Astros | No closer in Houston yet

Mon, 28 Mar 2016 23:00:14 -0700

Houston Astros RP Luke Gregerson struck out the side on nine pitches Sunday, March 27, but manager A.J. Hinch avoided a question regarding whether Gregerson or RP Ken Giles would be the closer. "I'm trying to deflate some of the eagerness of status," Hinch said. "I'd like our bullpen to be good and I'd like all of them to embrace pitching to help us win, which they do. We will line it up accordingly like most people are accustomed to it. It doesn't mean the same guy is going to get the save all the time."

Fantasy Tip: While he doesn't definitely name anyone, Giles was expected to be the front runner. He has had a rough spring, and Gregerson just got back from an injury. We still favor Giles here on pure stuff, but it sounds like Gregerson is right on his tail. Giles is an RP2 in fantasy, and Gregerson is climbing up to the midrange RP3 range.

Astros | Luke Gregerson strong in debut

Sun, 27 Mar 2016 15:34:02 -0700

Houston Astros RP Luke Gregerson struck out the side on nine pitches in his only inning of work on Sunday, March 27.

Fantasy Tip: Gregerson, who missed most of the spring with a strained intercostal muscle, certainly made a statement as he tries to make a late push for the closer role. Ken Giles should get the first crack but may be on a short leash. Gregerson already proved he can handle the job last year and probably should be owned in most leagues, as he'll provide strong ERA and WHIP numbers even if he only posts a handful of saves this season.

Astros | Luke Gregerson to debut this weekend

Wed, 23 Mar 2016 12:07:04 -0700

Houston Astros RP Luke Gregerson (oblique) looked normal in a minor league game Wednesday, March 23, and he's set to make his spring debut this weekend, according to manager A.J. Hinch.

Fantasy Tip: Gregerson loses a lot of his fantasy value now that Ken Giles is expected to open the season as Houston's new closer. However, Gregerson, if healthy, can remain an asset in deeper leagues because of his peripherals and as a handcuff for Giles owners.

Astros | Luke Gregerson closer to a return

Tue, 22 Mar 2016 10:44:20 -0700

Houston Astros RP Luke Gregerson (oblique) will make his second minor league appearance Wednesday, March 23, according to manager A.J. Hinch. Gregerson hasn't pitched in a Grapefruit League game yet this spring. He threw a bullpen session Monday, March 21, and Hinch is confident Gregerson will be ready for opening day. The Astros are taking a cautious approach here.

Fantasy Tip: Oblique injuries are tricky, so it behooves Houston to take their time with Gregerson. Now that Ken Giles is in town and is expected to closer, Gregerson loses a lot of fantasy luster. However, Gregerson's numbers were great last year and should be helpful again to those in deeper leagues, even if he's not closing.
