Fantasy Tip: This could be the nail in the coffin for Gregerson. Could the team go back to Jim Johnson or shift towards Ryan Cook? Stay tuned.

Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin confirmed that the team will continue to use a closer-by-committee approach for save situations for the foreseeable future.
Fantasy Tip: If you're desperate for saves, RPs Luke Gregerson and Sean Doolittle appear to be the best bets to close games for the A's.

Oakland Athletics RP Jim Johnson came on in the eighth inning down 2-1 Monday, April 14. He threw a scoreless frame and ended up getting the win. RP Luke Gregerson threw a scoreless ninth inning for the save.
Fantasy Tip: Gregerson is the one to have right now. However, we're very skeptical because of Johnson's large salary on a miniscule payroll. We could see him getting the job back.

Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin said the team's closer-by-committee approach will depend greatly on the matchups in the ninth inning. RP Sean Doolittle likely will be used against left-handed hitters while RP Luke Gregerson will be used against right-handed batters.
Fantasy Tip: Owners should look to add one of these relief pitchers if they are available in their leagues and are looking for saves. Doolittle and Gregerson likely will not give owners full value since they will be sharing the closer duties.

Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin said the team will give RP Jim Johnson a break from closing games out in the ninth. RPs Sean Doolittle, Luke Gregerson, Ryan Cook and Dan Otero are all options for save opportunities.
Fantasy Tip: Johnson's struggles may be rooted in mechanical issues, mainly an inconsistent release point. Bench him until he gets back on track; he could still be useful in setup situations if he corrects his flaws. And remember, there's always the chance that Johnson gets his job back to himself before long.
Gregerson and Doolittle are probably your best targets initially for save opps, with Melvin using them based on matchups, but this situation could be frustrating for fantasy owners. Cook is a nice long-term candidate for the role. Otero isn't very intriguing and would probably only see a save chance if others were unavailable.

Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin didn't have much to say regarding a potential change in the ninth innings after RP Jim Johnson blew his second save of the season Wednesday, April 9. "I really don't know yet. And I don't know that there are potential options. I'm just saying that I'm not saying anything," Melvin said.
Johnson said he doesn't think he has any mechanical problems right now, but a scout at the game thinks Johnson has an inconsistent release point and is rushing his delivery. C Derek Norris said Johnson just needs to get ahead of hitters.
Fantasy Tip: Luke Gregerson and Sean Doolittle are the main candidates to take the job away from Johnson if Melvin elects to go that route. It's unclear if that's a possible right now, but the fact that Melvin didn't shoot it down may mean he's considering it. Grab Gregerson first if you're speculating.

Oakland Athletics RP Jim Johnson blew his second save of the season against the Minnesota Twins Wednesday, April 9. He now has two losses, two blown saves and a save in his first five outings for the team, plus an ERA of 18.90. RPs Sean Doolittle and Luke Gregerson are options to handle ninth-inning duties if the team decides to go elsewhere.
Fantasy Tip: If you're speculating or own Johnson, Gregerson should be your first target.

Oakland Athletics RPs Jim Johnson, Luke Gregerson, Sean Doolittle and Dan Otero are each considered locks for the bullpen for manager Bob Melvin. Left-handed RP Fernando Abad is also expected to get one of the vacant bullpen spot, with RP Evan Scribner looking like a good bet for another spot as a long reliever. That likely leaves on spot from a group of Ps Drew Pomeranz, Josh Lindblom, Joe Savery and Arnold Leon. Lindblom is believed to have the edge in the battle.

The Oakland Athletics avoided arbitration with RP Luke Gregerson Friday, Jan. 17, by agreeing to a one-year, $5.065 million deal.
Tue, 03 Dec 2013 13:38:27 -0800
The Oakland Athletics acquired RP Luke Gregerson from the San Diego Padres Tuesday, Dec. 3, in exchange for OF Seth Smith.
Fantasy Tip: The A's have seriously bolstered the back end of their bullpen the last several days with the acquisitions of Gregerson and Jim Johnson. Johnson figures to get the first crack at closing duties, but Ryan Cook or Gregerson could get some opportunities if he falters. Cook likely would have the upper hand on the ninth inning over Gregerson.
