Pirates | Jeff Locke bounces back in a big way

Mon, 20 Jun 2016 19:46:30 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jeff Locke rebounded from consecutive terrible outings Monday, June 20, blanking the San Francisco Giants over 6 2/3 innings en route to a 1-0 home victory. Locke had surrendered 18 runs in 8 2/3 frames over his previous two starts in road losses to the New York Mets and Colorado Rockies.

Fantasy Tip: Locke, who is 4-1 with a 3.26 ERA at home as opposed to 2-4 with a 7.36 ERA away from Pittsburgh, may have just saved his spot in the rotation with this one. Despite the fine start, the southpaw is far too inconsistent and doesn't possess enough swing-and-miss stuff to be considered outside of NL-only and very deep mixed leagues.

Pirates | Jeff Locke suffers loss Wednesday

Wed, 15 Jun 2016 20:20:06 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jeff Locke (5-5) allowed seven runs on nine hits over four innings in a loss to the New York Mets Wednesday, June 14, with one walk and three strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: In his last two starts, Locke has given up 18 runs on 20 hits over 8 2/3 innings and has seen his ERA rise from 4.28 to 5.95. He should be avoided in all fantasy formats for the foreseeable future.

Pirates | Jeff Locke shelled in loss

Thu, 09 Jun 2016 18:13:41 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jeff Locke allowed 11 runs on 11 hits while walking three and striking out two over 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Colorado Rockies Thursday, June 9, snapping a four-start winning streak.

Fantasy Tip: Locke's mini hot streak came to a harsh end, and he remains a shot-in-the-dark play in daily formats.

Pirates | Jeff Locke tosses shutout

Tue, 31 May 2016 04:11:53 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jeff Locke threw a three-hit shutout, his first complete game, in a win over the Miami Marlins Monday, May 30.

Fantasy Tip: Locke entered the game with a 5.03 ERA, and with minimal strikeout upside, he is a tough sell in any format.

Pirates | Jeff Locke earns win Thursday

Thu, 19 May 2016 19:15:00 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jeff Locke (2-3) allowed two runs on six hits over seven innings in a victory over the Atlanta Braves Thursday, May 19, with two walks and six strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Locke has tossed quality starts in four of his last five outings, although his overall numbers still remain mediocre and he isn't a great option outside of NL-only and cavernous mixed leagues. His next scheduled start will come against the Arizona Diamondbacks Wednesday, May 25.

Pirates | Pittsburgh rotation update after PPD

Tue, 10 May 2016 22:37:44 -0700

The Pittsburgh Pirates will use SP Juan Nicasio Wednesday, May 11, against the Cincinnati Reds after the game Tuesday, May 10, was rained out. SP Francisco Liriano will work in the series opener Friday, May 13, against the Chicago Cubs, followed by SP Jeff Locke Saturday, May 14, and SP Gerrit Cole Sunday, May 15.

Fantasy Tip: Nicasio has the best matchup, as he faces the lowly Reds. Locke has the worst luck of the four, as he'll now draw Jake Arrieta in Saturday's game, rather than facing Jason Hammel Friday.

Pirates | Jeff Locke makes rotation

Tue, 29 Mar 2016 15:31:22 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jeff Locke will be in the starting rotation to begin the year. SPs Ryan Vogelsong and Juan Nicasio are still battling for the fifth and final spot. Locke has been experimenting with a new windup delivery this spring.

Fantasy Tip: Locke saw some control gains last year associated with more mechanical changes, but the bottom line is he doesn't generate enough swings and misses to be viable outside of cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues. Nicasio has been a big spring surprise with heavy strikeout numbers and could become the Bucs' latest reclamation project if he wins the job. Take a flier on him in deeper leagues.

Pirates | Jeff Locke to work Wednesday

Tue, 01 Mar 2016 19:42:56 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jeff Locke will work in the Grapefruit League spring game Wednesday, March 2, against the Detroit Tigers and he will be followed by Ps Juan Nicasio, Jared Hughes, Arquimedes Caminero, Eric O'Flaherty and Jorge Rondon.

Fantasy Tip: Locke went 8-11 with a 4.49 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP in 30 starts while striking out 129 over 168 1/3 innings. It was a so-so year for the southpaw, who had a career-high ERA, but also had his most strikeouts while serving up one fewer homer in 37 more innings than 2014. If he can re-gain his control he isn't a bad back-end fantasy rotation option in NL-only leagues.

Pirates | Jeff Locke signs with Pittsburgh

Thu, 14 Jan 2016 14:51:24 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jeff Locke re-signed a one-year, $3.025 million contract to avoid arbitration Thursday, Jan. 14.

Fantasy Tip: After a blazing first half of the 2013 season, Locke has regressed annually, and he shouldn't be viewed as anything more than a cavernous mixed and NL-only option. He has a career 4.16 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 6.6 K/9, after all.

Pirates | Jeff Locke earns win Wednesday

Wed, 26 Aug 2015 21:06:27 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jeff Locke (7-8) allowed two runs on five hits over seven innings in a victory over the Miami Marlins Wednesday, Aug. 26, with one walk and three strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Locke ($5,600, 11.2% of cap) earned his first win since July 31, and had his longest outing since he tossed 7 2/3 innings against the Brewers July 19. He will make his next start against Milwaukee Tuesday, Sept. 1.
