Mets | Zack Wheeler feels fine after catch

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 14:42:05 -0700

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) felt "fine" after having a catch Monday, June 27. There's still nothing on his schedule yet, however.

Fantasy Tip: Wheeler recently experienced a slight setback in his recovery from Tommy John surgery, so this is positive news to hear regarding the hard-throwing right-hander. Although it doesn't look like he'll be returning as quick as initially anticipated coming into the campaign, Wheeler still carries a significant amount of potential, and has the ability to be a possible difference-maker for fantasy teams in the final months. Unfortunately, though, it's still unknown when he can come back to the Mets.

Mets | Zack Wheeler suffers setback

Thu, 23 Jun 2016 05:30:35 -0700

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) received a cortisone injection for sensory nerve irritation in his right elbow Wednesday, June 22, but the Mets believe his surgically repaired elbow is sound.

Fantasy Tip: Wheeler's return might creep into August after this setback from Tommy John surgery. He's worth stashing in NL-only leagues.

Mets | Zack Wheeler to pitch simulated game

Tue, 14 Jun 2016 13:52:46 -0700

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) will pitch one inning in a Gulf Coast League simulated game in the next week. If all goes well there, Wheeler could head out on a rehab assignment at Class A St. Lucie.

Fantasy Tip: Keep an eye on this situation. He could be a sleeper candidate in deeper NL and mixed leagues when activated. Wheeler may be a risk in daily leagues because it takes some time for pitchers recovering from Tommy John surgery to regain their stroke on the mound.

Mets | Zack Wheeler eyeing second-half return

Fri, 03 Jun 2016 14:20:41 -0700

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) is aiming to return to the rotation following the All-Star break.

Fantasy Tip: Through his first 49 career starts, Wheeler has a respectable 3.50 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 8.5 K/9. He missed all off 2015, and the organization has been extremely cautious with their promising young hurler, but expect him to provide a solid fantasy return when he rejoins the rotation. Wheeler is a viable stash candidate in all fantasy leagues.

Mets | Zack Wheeler set for bullpen session

Wed, 01 Jun 2016 17:07:22 -0700

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) will meet the team in Miami and throw a bullpen session this weekend.

Fantasy Tip: This is a notable step for Wheeler as he makes his comeback from Tommy John surgery. If he avoids setbacks, he could be back in the Mets rotation by July 1. He should be stashed in most fantasy leagues, but temper your expectations for him immediately upon his return. It might not be until 2017 until we see Wheeler's true potential resurface.

Mets | Zack Wheeler getting closer

Mon, 23 May 2016 16:20:31 -0700

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) threw off the slope of a mound Monday, May 23, and should start doing advance bullpen sessions in the next couple of weeks.

Fantasy Tip: The Mets are hoping to have Wheeler enter their rotation July 1 after recovering from Tommy John surgery. Keep expectations in check upon his immediate return, but Wheeler has plenty of upside in the rotation and should be stashed in the majority of seasonal leagues. You'll probably want to avoid him in his first start or two, depending on the matchups.

Mets | Zack Wheeler on schedule

Tue, 17 May 2016 16:14:36 -0700

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) remains on schedule to return on July 1, although there is less wiggle room after Wheeler underwent an additional procedure in April to remove a stitch, according to general manager Sandy Alderson.

Fantasy Tip: Wheeler has been overshadowed because of his Tommy John procedure and with all of New York's other young and powerful arms. But Wheeler has the ability to put up big numbers when healthy, too. However, he could be inconsistent upon his return and may not pitch to his full potential for owners until 2017. Pick him up and stash him if he's available, but keep expectations in check. Bartolo Colon is the likely candidate to be bumped to the bullpen when Wheeler is back.

Mets | Zack Wheeler nearly ready for workouts

Tue, 10 May 2016 13:47:52 -0700

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) should ramp up toward workouts within the next two weeks, according to team sources. He is still on track for a July return.

Fantasy Tip: The Mets are going to take things slow and easy with Wheeler, since the pitching staff is the bread and butter of that team and what got them to the World Series last season. Wheeler is worth stashing away in NL and mixed leagues with deep benches, but don't expect a ton of positive results right off the bat. Pitchers at the back of the rotation like Steven Matz and Bartolo Colon are having strong seasons, so there may not be a spot right away. Be patient.

Mets | Zack Wheeler has procedure

Tue, 12 Apr 2016 13:28:09 -0700

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) had a minor procedure to remove a stitch from his right elbow Tuesday, April 12, and he will resume throwing in a few days.

Fantasy Tip: This was an expected procedure for Wheeler, and it shouldn't qualify as a setback in his recovery from Tommy John surgery. Wheeler, another one of the Mets' promising young arms, is expected to be ready to return around midseason. He's worth stashing in deeper mixed and NL-only leagues, but temper your expectations a bit for him once he does return.

Mets | Zack Wheeler to get stich removed

Fri, 08 Apr 2016 09:42:17 -0700

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) is scheduled to have a "minor operation" to remove a stitch from Tommy John surgery that never dissolved. It's said to be "no big deal."

Fantasy Tip: As long as that's the case, this shouldn't affect Wheeler's targeted return around the middle of the summer. He can be a factor in all leagues, even standard ones, and owners would be wise to add him if they have an injury slot opening on the bench.
