Mets | Zack Wheeler could return in July

Sun, 07 Feb 2016 07:06:48 -0800

Updating previous reports, New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) is eyeing a return to the majors around July 1, although general manager Sandy Alderson said there is a slight possibility that he could come back sooner. "it could accelerate a little bit but we feel real comfortable with that," Alderson said.

Fantasy Tip: Wheeler has been throwing on flat ground and is expected to begin throwing off a mound soon. Although he missed the entire 2015 season due to Tommy John surgery, he could be worth a late-round flier in NL-only and cavernous mixed leagues if you can afford the roster space.

Mets | Sixth starter on tap for Mets

Wed, 03 Feb 2016 10:58:42 -0800

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) is expected to return around midseason, but the team plans to use a sixth starter, occasionally, before he returns to keep pitchers fresh.

Fantasy Tip: The team wants to limit Steven Matz's innings, and this will be a way for them to do so. Matz is in the SP3 range with breakout potential. Wheeler is a decent flyer late it drafts.

Mets | Zack Wheeler alters arm angle

Tue, 02 Feb 2016 12:33:53 -0800

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow), who is currently rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, has altered his arm angle and is hoping for similar success that SP Jacob deGrom found with more downward movement and less stress on his elbow. The Mets have slowed Wheeler down after his surgery and now anticipate a July comeback after a 15-month layoff.

Fantasy Tip: Wheeler is just another one of New York's bright young pitching talents, and he'll be overshadowed now that he's been out since 2014. Starters coming off Tommy John surgery usually require a period of adjustment, so don't be surprised if he's up and down upon his return in the second half. Even then, he might be worth stashing in an NL-only or deep mixed league if you have extra spots.

Mets | Zack Wheeler rehab update

Wed, 27 Jan 2016 17:05:39 -0800

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) is currently working out at the team's spring training complex in Port St. Lucie, Fla., although he hasn't been cleared to throw off a mound yet.

Fantasy Tip: If all goes well with his rehab, Wheeler could resume pitching in the majors by June or July. He missed the entire 2015 season due to Tommy John surgery but he could be worth taking a late-round flier on in NL-only and cavernous mixed leagues.

Mets | Zack Wheeler rehab update

Thu, 03 Dec 2015 18:26:26 -0800

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) has resumed workouts and progressed to throwing from a distance of 120 feet on flat ground. He hopes to begin throwing off a mound early next year.

Fantasy Tip: If all goes well with his rehab, Wheeler could resume pitching in the majors around the All-Star break. He is likely to go undrafted in many leagues and fly under the radar because of his injury, although owners in NL-only and deep mixed leagues should keep tabs on him and consider taking a flier on him in the later rounds.

Mets | Zack Wheeler off the block

Sun, 15 Nov 2015 15:28:17 -0800

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler will be kept by the team, as sources indicate the Mets are going to build around the pitching staff.

Fantasy Tip: Wheeler will be under most fantasy owner's radars due to his Tommy John surgery. If you have a chance to draft him low, do so. He shouldn't go much higher than the middle rounds on most boards due to his injury.

Mets | Zack Wheeler continues to throw

Thu, 10 Sep 2015 12:51:02 -0700

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) will spend most of his time this winter rehabbing in Florida. He's currently throwing from 70 to 75 feet.

Fantasy Tip: Wheeler won't be back pitching in meaningful games for the Mets until next June or July, so he won't be drafted next spring. The Mets will surely be cautious with him in the second half in 2016, too, but he could still be a much-needed pitching acquisition for fantasy owners at the midway point.

Mets | NY closer to getting Jay Bruce

Fri, 31 Jul 2015 08:57:36 -0700

Cincinnati Reds OF Jay Bruce is closer to being traded to the New York Mets in exchange for SP Zack Wheeler Friday, July 31. The two teams are reviewing medical information. Bruce is hitting .257 with 17 home runs and 59 RBI in 350 at-bats and will make $12.5 million next year with a team option for $13 million for 2017.

Fantasy Tip: The Mets could surely use a power boost that Bruce ($5,200, 10.4% of cap) would give them. Bruce's fantasy value might take a small hit moving to a more pitcher-friendly environment in Citi Field, although his power can play anywhere.

Mets | Jay Bruce an option for Mets?

Thu, 30 Jul 2015 17:14:36 -0700

The Cincinnati Reds are willing to trade OF Jay Bruce to the New York Mets for SP Zack Wheeler now.

Fantasy Tip: A move away from the hitter-friendly environment of Great American Ballpark to the more pitching-friendly venue of Citi Field would cause Bruce's ($5,200, 10.4% of cap) to drop a little bit. However, he has power that plays anywhere, so it probably wouldn't be a drastic shift.

Mets | Carlos Gomez deal falls through

Wed, 29 Jul 2015 20:09:41 -0700

Updating a previous report, Milwaukee Brewers OF Carlos Gomez is staying put, as the previously agreed upon deal for 2B Wilmer Flores and SP Zack Wheeler has fallen through. General manager Sandy Alderson said Wednesday, July 29, "there is no trade" for Gomez and that a deal "will not transpire."

Fantasy Tip: So much for that. Gomez ($5,400, 10.8% of cap) is still a risky FantasyScore play in the coming days, as he is clearly on the trade block and could be dealt. He could be late scratch or early removal from a game, costing FantasyScore players.
