Mets | Zack Wheeler getting closer

Mon, 23 May 2016 16:20:31 -0700

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) threw off the slope of a mound Monday, May 23, and should start doing advance bullpen sessions in the next couple of weeks.

Fantasy Tip: The Mets are hoping to have Wheeler enter their rotation July 1 after recovering from Tommy John surgery. Keep expectations in check upon his immediate return, but Wheeler has plenty of upside in the rotation and should be stashed in the majority of seasonal leagues. You'll probably want to avoid him in his first start or two, depending on the matchups.

Mets | Zack Wheeler on schedule

Tue, 17 May 2016 16:14:36 -0700

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) remains on schedule to return on July 1, although there is less wiggle room after Wheeler underwent an additional procedure in April to remove a stitch, according to general manager Sandy Alderson.

Fantasy Tip: Wheeler has been overshadowed because of his Tommy John procedure and with all of New York's other young and powerful arms. But Wheeler has the ability to put up big numbers when healthy, too. However, he could be inconsistent upon his return and may not pitch to his full potential for owners until 2017. Pick him up and stash him if he's available, but keep expectations in check. Bartolo Colon is the likely candidate to be bumped to the bullpen when Wheeler is back.

Mets | Zack Wheeler nearly ready for workouts

Tue, 10 May 2016 13:47:52 -0700

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) should ramp up toward workouts within the next two weeks, according to team sources. He is still on track for a July return.

Fantasy Tip: The Mets are going to take things slow and easy with Wheeler, since the pitching staff is the bread and butter of that team and what got them to the World Series last season. Wheeler is worth stashing away in NL and mixed leagues with deep benches, but don't expect a ton of positive results right off the bat. Pitchers at the back of the rotation like Steven Matz and Bartolo Colon are having strong seasons, so there may not be a spot right away. Be patient.

Mets | Zack Wheeler has procedure

Tue, 12 Apr 2016 13:28:09 -0700

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) had a minor procedure to remove a stitch from his right elbow Tuesday, April 12, and he will resume throwing in a few days.

Fantasy Tip: This was an expected procedure for Wheeler, and it shouldn't qualify as a setback in his recovery from Tommy John surgery. Wheeler, another one of the Mets' promising young arms, is expected to be ready to return around midseason. He's worth stashing in deeper mixed and NL-only leagues, but temper your expectations a bit for him once he does return.

Mets | Zack Wheeler to get stich removed

Fri, 08 Apr 2016 09:42:17 -0700

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) is scheduled to have a "minor operation" to remove a stitch from Tommy John surgery that never dissolved. It's said to be "no big deal."

Fantasy Tip: As long as that's the case, this shouldn't affect Wheeler's targeted return around the middle of the summer. He can be a factor in all leagues, even standard ones, and owners would be wise to add him if they have an injury slot opening on the bench.

Mets | Zack Wheeler throwing Tuesday

Tue, 15 Mar 2016 10:45:21 -0700

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) threw from the rubber of a mound Tuesday, March 15, for the first time since having Tommy John surgery last March. The Mets expect Wheeler to return to the majors around July 1.

Fantasy Tip: Wheeler is now overshadowed by the rest of the Mets' young pitching staff, but he still has plenty of promise following TJS. He may still be worth stashing in deep mixed leagues with an expected return around midseason, but it'd be safer to wait until 2017 to rely on him.

Mets | Zack Wheeler returns to the mound

Wed, 02 Mar 2016 12:32:57 -0800

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) threw off the slope of a mound for the second time since his Tommy John surgery Wednesday, March 2, and the Mets are still targeting a July 1 return for him.

Fantasy Tip: Wheeler is progressing nicely so far, but the Mets have no reason to rush him with all the other young talent already in their rotation. He could provide some nice numbers in the second half, but it's much safer to save him for your fantasy team in 2017.

Mets | Zack Wheeler to throw Saturday

Fri, 26 Feb 2016 09:51:51 -0800

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) will throw 10 to 15 pitches from the slope of a mound Saturday, Feb. 27, for the first time since having Tommy John surgery last March.

Fantasy Tip: Wheeler won't debut in 2016 until at least June, and his already poor control could be even worse upon his initial return. Wheeler has the dominance, velocity and ground-ball profile to be very successful in the long term, though, just bet on him in 2017 and not this year.

Mets | Zack Wheeler to toe the mound

Mon, 22 Feb 2016 07:57:26 -0800

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) is expected to throw off a mound later this week. The team is targeting a July 1 return for Wheeler.

Fantasy Tip: Wheeler could be a solid pick in the final couple of rounds if you're able to stash him on the DL.

Mets | Zack Wheeler could return in July

Sun, 07 Feb 2016 07:06:48 -0800

Updating previous reports, New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) is eyeing a return to the majors around July 1, although general manager Sandy Alderson said there is a slight possibility that he could come back sooner. "it could accelerate a little bit but we feel real comfortable with that," Alderson said.

Fantasy Tip: Wheeler has been throwing on flat ground and is expected to begin throwing off a mound soon. Although he missed the entire 2015 season due to Tommy John surgery, he could be worth a late-round flier in NL-only and cavernous mixed leagues if you can afford the roster space.
