New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler (shoulder) visited with a doctor after dealing with shoulder stiffness last week. The team isn't worried about Wheeler, so he did not undergo an MRI exam. However, he won't pitch again this season.
Fantasy Tip: Go ahead and drop Wheeler in all redraft leagues.

The New York Mets have shut down SP Zack Wheeler (shoulder) for the remainder of the season. Wheeler felt some shoulder stiffness in his last start but will not need any MRI or doctor's exam.

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler could make two more starts this season, according to manager Terry Collins. Wheeler has thrown 168 2/3 innings this season and 100 in 17 starts at the major league level. He allowed four runs in five innings while walking a career-high six against the San Francisco Giants Tuesday, Sept. 17. His next start will likely come against the Cincinnati Reds Monday, Sept. 23.

New York Mets P Carlos Torres will move to the bullpen for a few days as the team goes with a modified six-man starting rotation. SP Zack Wheeler is currently at 163 2/3 innings on the year entering his start Tuesday, Sept. 17, meaning he'll likely only have one more start. Torres will return to the rotation Sunday, Sept. 22.

New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler is around 28 innings from being shut down for the season. His next start is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 6, and it's unclear if he'll make it through the final month of the season. However, the team is considering a six-man rotation. He has thrown 151 2/3 innings between the majors and minors this year.
Fantasy Tip: Continue to ride Wheeler out until he's shut down. Be aware, however, that the Mets could try to limit how deep he goes in his remaining starts in order to preserve him the rest of the way.

The New York Mets signed free-agent SP Daisuke Matsuzaka (Indians) to an undisclosed deal Thursday, Aug. 22. Matsuzaka could enter the rotation and take the spot of SP Carlos Torres. The team is trying to limit the innings of SPs Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler down the stretch.
Fantasy Tip: Matsuzaka might need a few minor league tune-ups before jumping into the Mets' rotation. Consider him only if you're desperate in NL-only universes. That's if he even gets called up.

New York Mets SP Jenrry Mejia (elbow) is dealing with bone spurs in his right elbow and might need surgery after the season. Manager Terry Collins thinks Mejia will soon have surgery, ending his season. "I can't say I know for sure, but it certainly doesn't look very good," Collins said about Mejia pitching again this season. Mejia wasn't at any harm by pitching through the pain in his elbow.
SP Carlos Torres could be asked to start against the Detroit Tigers Friday, Aug. 23, in Mejia's spot. Another option would be for Mejia's turn to be skipped and SP Matt Harvey to go on Friday. The team prefers to give SP Zack Wheeler an extra day of rest to preserve his innings, though. Collins said that September call-ups would likely be plugged into the rotation instead of Torres. SPs Rafael Montero, Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom are unlikely to be among that group, however, because they are facing innings limits.
Fantasy Tip: Torres may be a short-term NL-only option but nothing else. Any minor league pitcher that is tasked to fill out the rotation in the season's final month likely won't be fantasy-relevant, either.

New York Mets manager Terry Collins said the team is no longer considering the possibility of using SP Zack Wheeler out of the bullpen in order to limit his innings.
Wed, 31 Jul 2013 15:03:41 -0700
New York Mets SP Zack Wheeler could be moved to the bullpen in the final few weeks of the season in order to limit his overall innings pitched. He is currently at 114 1/3 frames this year between the majors and minors, and he tossed a total of 149 innings last year. He's likely to have about 66 innings remaining this year to reach a rough cap of 180 innings.
Fantasy Tip: Wheeler's value will obviously take a big hit if he's moved to the bullpen or shut down. Ride him until then.

The team will not say when they plan on recalling SSs Jordany Valdespin or Ruben Tejada from Triple-A Las Vegas. Valdespin is batting .500 (22-for-44) with two home runs and 21 RBIs in 11 games and Tejada is hitting .337 (33-for-98) with eight RBIs in 24 games. The Mets' priority right now is to maintain a six-man rotation in order to limit the innings of SPs Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler.
