Braves | Mike Minor surgery details

Wed, 13 May 2015 08:50:17 -0700

Updating a previous report, Atlanta Braves SP Mike Minor (shoulder) will have exploratory surgery on his pitching shoulder this week, according to a person familiar with the situation. Surgery for Minor could hurt his chances of being offered a contract for next season, although a recent MRI exam showed no structural damage in his arm. If damage is found during the procedure, Minor's season would likely be over. It might be hard for him to come back and pitch in 2015 even if no damage is found, as he's missed a lot of time and would have to re-strengthen his shoulder. Minor has continued to have pain and discomfort in his shoulder when he's attempted to ramp up his throwing program.

Fantasy Tip: With Minor likely done for the year, it gives Mike Foltynewicz ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) some more run in the starting rotation. He's an unpolished product, though, despite high-strikeout upside, but he can be a sneaky matchup play at FantasyScore.

Braves | Mike Minor will undergo surgery

Tue, 12 May 2015 16:40:58 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Minor (shoulder) will undergo surgery this week, according to Bill Shanks of FOX Sports. SP Mike Foltynewicz should remain in the starting rotation for the time being.

Fantasy Tip: Foltynewicz ($3,700, 7.4% of cap) picked up the win in each of his first two major league starts, but did so with an ERA of 5.23. Foltynewicz does have nine strikeouts through 10 and one-third innings pitched, showing his upside. Foltynewicz is an option in NL-only leagues, and he should be owned in dynasty leagues.

Braves | Mike Minor not close to returning

Sun, 03 May 2015 11:12:56 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Minor (shoulder) was recently moved from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list, in order to clear space on the 40-man roster for INF Pedro Ciriaco. General manager John Hart said Minor doesn't appear to be close to returning to action anytime soon. "There has not been any measurable improvement that you want to see," Hart said. "We've taken the MRIs. We are trying to stay as patient as we can and Mike is doing everything he can. At this point, things haven't progressed."

Fantasy Tip: According to Hart, the Braves should know more about Minor's status in the next seven to 10 days. There is no timetable for him to resume throwing and it would be surprising to see him pitching in meaningful games before the All-Star break. He remains a stash candidate for owners in deep fantasy leagues who can afford to use the roster space on him.

Braves | Mike Minor still long tossing

Fri, 10 Apr 2015 14:39:02 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Minor (shoulder) is still doing long-toss throwing sessions and hasn't thrown off a mound yet, according to manager Fredi Gonzalez. Gonzlaez noted Minor is close to throwing from the mound, though.

Fantasy Tip: Minor is still approximately two months away, as he has had to essentially restart his spring training program all over. After battling shoulder injuries throughout the 2014 season, there are certainly concerns about his ability to rebound this year. Still, he is worth stashing in the majority of formats.

Braves | Mike Minor throws from 60 feet

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 13:39:21 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Minor (shoulder) threw two sets of 15 throws from 60 feet Tuesday, March 24. It was the first time he threw since being shut down Thursday, March 5.

Fantasy Tip: Minor is basically starting spring training all over again, and he projects to return in late-May or early-June. With his 2014 season mired by shoulder issues, his fantasy stock is becoming a risky undertaking, and you shouldn't be afraid to allow him to take up space on an opponent's roster. Still, he returned near-elite numbers in 2013, so there could be upside for a patient owner.

Braves | Mike Minor return timeline

Mon, 23 Mar 2015 15:31:54 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Minor (shoulder) is expected to return in mid-May or early-June, according to manager Fredi Gonzalez.

Fantasy Tip: Minor battled through shoulder issues all of last season, so expecting him to return to the near-elite level of production he showed during 2013 is ill-advised. He is a stash candidate in deep mixed and NL-only leagues, but a solid return is far more speculative than certain. Don't be afraid to let him be someone else's roster clog, either.

Braves | No structural damage for Mike Minor

Tue, 10 Mar 2015 09:56:34 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Minor (shoulder) is dealing with inflammation of the rotator cuff but no structural damage, according to Dr. James Andrews. However, Minor isn't sure what caused his shoulder problems early in spring that will force him to open the season on the 15-day disabled list for the second straight season. Minor had an MRI exam and an injection from Andrews and will rest for two weeks before resuming throwing. Andrews also told Minor that too much weightlifting and other exercises put unneeded tightness in his upper body. The Braves intend to go with in-house options, for now, to fill the extra rotation spot to start the year.

Fantasy Tip: It's great news for Minor, but you have to continue to wonder what's really wrong with Minor's left shoulder. Will this be a repeat of 2014 when he battled through shoulder pain and disappointed his owners after a fantastic 2013? The fact that he'll start on the DL once again will drive his price down to a very cheap level. He's still worth speculating on and stashing at the tail end of mixed league drafts.

Braves | Mike Minor evaluated

Mon, 09 Mar 2015 15:14:43 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Minor (shoulder) was evaluated by specialist Dr. James Andrews Monday, March 9. The team is expected to announce results Tuesday, March 10.

Fantasy Tip: It was easy to back Minor as a bounce-back candidate this season before the news of the shoulder soreness and need for a specialist's assessment. Make sure to check back for an official word on the severity of Minor's shoulder surgery. Until then, consider him an extremely risky fantasy option.

Braves | Mike Minor not too concerned

Fri, 06 Mar 2015 11:13:05 -0800

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Minor (shoulder) will visit with Dr. James Andrews about his sore left shoulder next week, but Minor isn't too concerned. "It would really surprise me if there was something majorly wrong. Last year there was a lot more pain than right now. I was throwing all year, trying to make every start. I could throw (now), I could pitch and potentially I don't think anybody would even notice if I didn't say anything," Minor said. Minor struggled through 2014 while pitching through shoulder pain for much of the year, and the Braves don't want to go down that road again. The worst-case scenario might be exploratory surgery to find out what is wrong in his shoulder.

Fantasy Tip: Until we have the final word from Dr. Andrews, fantasy owners need to sit tight on Minor. After he pitched through shoulder pain for much of 2014, exploratory surgery may be needed. It was easy to view Minor as a bounce-back candidate in 2015 after he was arguably Atlanta's best pitcher in 2013. His shoulder tightness puts a halt to that for now. Stay tuned.
