Miami Marlins SP Jacob Turner is all but guaranteed a starting rotation spot this year. President of baseball operations Michael Hill mentions SPs Brad Hand, Brian Flynn and Tom Koehler as candidates to compete for the fifth and final rotation spot. SPs Andrew Heaney, Justin Nicolino, Adam Conley and Anthony DeSclafini will receive spring innings to prove themselves, but they'll likely start in the minors.

The Miami Marlins are considering giving SP Jacob Turner more rest before his next start after he failed to go six innings for his sixth straight start Sunday, Sept. 8. His next turn in the rotation is scheduled to come up Friday, Sept. 13, against the New York Mets. SPs Brad Hand and Brian Flynn will play into the equation in the starting rotation down the stretch.
Fantasy Tip: Turner appears to be tiring down the stretch, which is a good reason for the Fish to rest him in the final weeks. Hand and Flynn should only be considered in NL-only universes.

Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez will be shut down at around 170 innings this year. He's currently at 139 2/3 innings, so he could be shut down before the season's final month. Fernandez had never pitched above Class A before this season as a 21-year-old. The team could decide to shut SP Jacob Turner down, too, if he shows signs of fatigue. SPs Brad Hand and Brian Flynn could be called up in September to help fill the rotation. SP Sam Dyson is another candidate. It's doubtful SPs Andrew Heaney, Anthony DeSclafini or Justin Nicolino will be recalled from Double-A Jacksonville.
Fantasy Tip: Fernandez, at 8-5 with a 2.45 ERA and 149 strikeouts, is a heavy favorite for NL Rookie of the Year honors. He's been fantastic, but the time to utilize his talents is running out. Just be aware. Any of the young hurlers the Marlins may call up would only be useful for a start or two in deep NL-only leagues. If you're in the running for a fantasy championship, it's probably wise not to rely on them.

Miami Marlins manager Mike Redmond said SP Jacob Turner will receive the first start after the All-Star break. Redmond said SP Jose Fernandez will be the No. 5 starter but does not know the order for the other three rotation spots.

Miami Marlins SP Jacob Turner will be brought up and make his season debut against the New York Mets Friday, May 31.
Fantasy Tip: This former first-rounder was 3-4 with a 4.47 ERA in 10 starts with Triple-A New Orleans, and he had only 35 strikeouts in 56 1/3 innings there. His solid ERA late last year for the Fish was mostly buoyed by fortunate hit and strand rates. He's not striking out enough to be chased in mixed leagues just yet.

Miami Marlins SP Jacob Turner (leg) was hit in his right leg by a comebacker in his last start, but he might still make his next start. If not, he won't miss more than one start.

Miami Marlins SP Jacob Turner will begin the season in Triple-A.
Mon, 25 Mar 2013 00:15:26 -0700
Miami Marlins SP Jacob Turner has 18 hits allowed, 14 earned runs (9.69 ERA), nine walks and five strikeouts in 13 innings of work, numbers that will likely get Turner sent to Triple-A at the start of this week. Turner, who was projected as the fifth starter in the rotation, would be replaced by SP Kevin Slowey if Turner heads to the minors, and RP John Maine would slide into Slowey's long-relief role.
