St. Louis Cardinals SP Shelby Miller will be moved to the bullpen to begin the second half of the season. He's not guaranteed to make the start Wednesday, July 23, and manager Mike Matheny said Miller needs rest.
Fantasy Tip: Miller had allowed at least three earned runs in five starts leading up to the All-Star break. He'll surely be back in the rotation before long, but the Cardinals are using the start of the second half to push him back.

St. Louis Cardinals SP Carlos Martinez recorded a season-high six innings Tuesday, July 8, and the Cards are 5-0 in his five starts this year. Manager Mike Matheny said Martinez's delivery was smooth and that the right-hander's sinker looked on point. He pointed out Martinez looked better because he wasn't trying to reach triple digits on his fastball.
Fantasy Tip: Martinez is finding his groove, but hopefully he'll keep his rotation spot after the trade deadline. Grab him wherever you can. Jake Peavy or whoever else St. Louis may acquire would bump Joe Kelly or Tyler Lyons. Shelby Miller may actually be at risk if they seek outside SP help.

St. Louis Cardinals SP Shelby Miller's poor strikeout and walk rates have caught up with him in his two most recent outings, when the Cincinnati Reds and New York Yankees tagged him for 11 earned runs in 10 innings, and his luck with stranding runners in scoring position ran out. As of now, Miller has the highest walk rate (12 percent) among starting pitchers, and his strikeout-walk ratio (1.44) is the third worst. He's also allowing 1.31 home runs per nine innings. Left-handed hitters have been doing plenty of damage against him, as well, because he doesn't have an effective offspeed pitch to keep them from sitting on his fastball.
Fantasy Tip: Miller's peripherals are very disturbing right now, and he'll need to improve on his walk rate, to start, in order to show improvement across the board. He remains one of the more exciting young arms in baseball, but right now, you might want to consider benching him based on matchups.

St. Louis Cardinals SP Shelby Miller wants to improve on holding runners on base, something he has struggled with lately. "I didn't do a great job of holding runners, at all," he said. "I've got to get better at it. It's a huge part of the game. "I was a little frustrated trying to get guys out and I kind of forgot about holding the runners."

St. Louis Cardinals SP Shelby Miller allowed seven earned runs on nine hits and two walks in five innings Wednesday, May 28, against the New York Yankees. Miller has only pitched 14 clean innings out of the 61 2/3 he has logged in 2014; he only had one 1-2-3 stanza Wednesday in his worst statistical start of his career.
Fantasy Tip: Miller has been teetering on a statistical meltdown all year; he allows too many runners and has to work overtime to escape jams. Maybe the talented righty will work on some things to become stable, but he's a shaky start in most fantasy leagues right now.

St. Louis Cardinals SP Shelby Miller said he didn't tire down the stretch and wasn't injured in any way at the end of last season. Miller was used for only one inning in the Cardinals' postseason run. "It's tough to not get to pitch in the postseason and stuff, but at the same time, we had a good thing going and it's hard to change it up," Miller said. "I don't really have a good answer for it to be honest. We were winning games, so you can't really complain."

St. Louis Cardinals SP Shelby Miller averaged just under 10 strikeouts per nine innings in his first 21 starts last year, but his K/9 fell to 6.4 in his last 10 starts and his walk rate jumped from 2.6 per nine to four over his last 10 starts. Miller had 173 1/3 innings and has tossed 328 combined innings in the last two seasons.
