Mets | Steven Matz wants to improve from stretch

Thu, 21 Jan 2016 12:06:22 -0800

New York Mets SP Steven Matz said he would like to pitch out of the stretch better in 2016. "It feels like I can get in a groove for a few innings out of my windup. And then once I pitch out of the stretch, I may lose my stuff a little bit. So I just want to try to be more consistent out of my stretch as well."

Fantasy Tip: Assuming Matz can shake the injury bug that hindered him in 2015, he stands to have an excellent season as an end-of-the-rotation arm for your fantasy roster. He posted a 2.27 ERA, a 1.23 WHIP with 34 strikeouts over 35 2/3 innings last season as a preview of what is to come, and Matz should be targeted as an upside candidate in the later middle rounds of drafts.

Mets | N.Y. unlikely to trade aces

Wed, 04 Nov 2015 11:53:11 -0800

New York Mets SPs Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz are unlikely to be traded, according to general manager Sandy Alderson. "I can't see it happening," Alderson said. "You never know what comes up. But I think it's unlikely."

Fantasy Tip: All four of these young starters for the Mets will be highly valuable to fantasy owners next season, and all four will come off the board in the early rounds of drafts.

New York Mets SP Steven Matz is expected to throw 90 to 95 pitches in Game 4 of the World Series Saturday, Oct. 31, according to manager Terry Collins.

Fantasy Tip: Don't be surprised to see Bartolo Colon throw several innings of long relief if Matz is unable to pitch deep into Game 4.

Mets | Matt Harvey to start Game 1

Sat, 24 Oct 2015 13:26:33 -0700

New York Mets SP Matt Harvey will start Game 1 of the World Series against the Kansas City Royals. He'll be followed by SP Jacob deGrom, SP Noah Syndergaard and SP Steven Matz.

Fantasy Tip: Harvey had a good season a full year from Tommy John surgery and should be poised to build on it next season. He'll be one of the top few SP options in drafts.

New York Mets SP Jacob deGrom, SP Noah Syndergaard, SP Matt Harvey and SP Steven Matz will be the rotation in the World Series.

Fantasy Tip: FantasyScore won't have daily games in the World Series, but it should be fun to watch no matter who comes out of the American League.

Mets | Homers not a problem for Steven Matz

Wed, 21 Oct 2015 12:59:43 -0700

New York Mets SP Steven Matz has allowed just 14 home runs through 385 2/3 innings during his professional career with four home runs allowed over his 40 2/3 innings in the majors. Matz is starting against the Chicago Cubs in Game 4 of the National League Champsionship Series Wednesday, Oct. 21.

Fantasy Tip: Matz ($6,400, 12.8% of cap) didn't allow a long fly during his start in the National League Division Series, either, but he did surrender three runs on six hits and three walks through five innings in losing fashion. Still, Matz projects favorably for his start against the Chicago Cubs who boast a 26.2% strikeout rate against lefties. Matz is a strong FantasyScore start Wednesday.

Mets | Steven Matz starting Game 4

Wed, 21 Oct 2015 08:58:31 -0700

New York Mets SP Steven Matz will start Game 4 of the National League Championship Series against the Chicago Cubs Wednesday, Oct. 21. He'll be making his first appearance at Wrigley Field and first against the Cubs.

Fantasy Tip: The Cubs were somewhat vulnerable against lefties in the regular season this year, making Matz ($6,400, 12.8% of cap) an intriguing option on FantasyScore. The Cubs also strike out plenty.

Mets | Noah Syndergaard could be pushed back

Sat, 17 Oct 2015 10:49:52 -0700

Updating a previous report, New York Mets SP Noah Syndergaard could be pushed back to start Game 4 of the National League Championship Series Wednesday, Oct. 21, if he is unable to start Game 2 Sunday, Oct. 18, according to manager Terry Collins. SP Steven Matz would be called upon to start Game 2 if Syndergaard does not pitch.

Fantasy Tip: Syndergaard ($7,000, 14.0% of cap) threw 17 pitches in relief in Game 5 of the NLDS versus the Dodgers and Collins estimated that he threw more than 100 pitches in the bullpen while warming up on four different occasions during the game. If Syndergaard experiences any residual soreness Saturday, Oct. 17, Matz ($6,400, 12.8% of cap) will be used in Game 2.

Mets | Noah Syndergaard preferred Game 2 starter

Fri, 16 Oct 2015 15:16:02 -0700

New York Mets SP Noah Syndergaard is the preferred starter of Game 2 of the National League Championship Series Sunday, Oct. 18. Manager Terry Collins cannot commit to Syndergaard, though, because Syndergaard threw 17 pitches in relief and approximately 100 pitches warming up to enter Game 5 of the National League Division Series Thursday, Oct. 15. SP Steven Matz will start Game 2, if Syndergaard is unable to start.

Fantasy Tip: Syndergaard ($7,000, 14.0% of cap) has pitched well all season, and he has double-digit strikeout potential against the swing-happy Cubs. However, Chicago has won 12 of their last 13 games and exploded for 20 runs over their past three showings during the NLDS. Plus, Jake Arrieta ($8,300, 16.6% of cap) will be starting Game 2 for Chicago. It is a tough draw for Syndergaard or Matz ($6,400, 12.8% of cap).
