Mets | Syndergaard, Matz to keep pitching

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 14:30:12 -0700

New York Mets SPs Noah Syndergaard (elbow) and Steven Matz (elbow) are both dealing with bone spurs but will continue to pitch, according to manager Terry Collins. Matz's spurs are worse and will need to be surgically removed eventually, although the Mets are hoping it can wait until the offseason. Surgery will require a three-month recovery timeline. Syndergaard's bone spur is "very small," and 90% of pitchers have something comparable, according to general manager Sandy Alderson. Syndergaard is being treated with anti-inflammatories and won't need offseason surgery. The Mets have assurances from team doctors that Matz can't do more damage by continuing to pitch through his issue. The Mets will monitor Matz on a start-to-start basis to make sure he's not changing his mechanics and compromising his body in another way. Alderson said New York will consider going to a six-man rotation when SP Zack Wheeler (elbow) returns in August.

Fantasy Tip: It's troublesome to see the Mets' young starters deal with elbow concerns, but at least they aren't significant issues. However, at least in the immediate future, that makes both Syndergaard and Matz very risky fantasy starters. Matz is a bigger question mark since his bone spurs are more significant, and the good news with Thor is that his velocity wasn't affected in his start Monday.

Mets | Steven Matz pushed back to Thursday

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 13:27:51 -0700

New York Mets SP Steven Matz (elbow) will make his next start against the Chicago Cubs Thursday, June 30.

Fantasy Tip: Matz will have his start pushed back a day, and Logan Verrett will make a spot start against the Washington Nationals in place of Matz Wednesday, June 29. View both hurlers as risky options, as Matz is pitching with bone spurs in his left elbow against a high-end offense, and Verrett has underwhelming numbers as a starter (4.61 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 7.5 K/9).

Mets | Surgery an option for Steven Matz

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 14:39:10 -0700

Updating previous reports, New York Mets SP Steven Matz (elbow) will discuss whether to have surgery on his elbow Tuesday, June 28. If he has an operation now, it would be six weeks before he'd be able to resume throwing.

Fantasy Tip: Pitchers often pitch through bone spurs, but the Mets may want Matz to address the issue now if he's unable to pitch through the pain in his left elbow. Either way, Matz owners should be very concerned, as he may lose his effectiveness if he pitches through the issue. Make plans for the worst if you own the young lefty.

Mets | Bone spur for Steven Matz

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 13:51:23 -0700

Updating a previous report, New York Mets SP Steven Matz (elbow) is dealing with a bone spur in his elbow, according to three team sources.

Fantasy Tip: The Mets are considering skipping Matz's next turn against the Nationals on Wednesday, and you should too if you own him in fantasy. Bone spurs aren't a serious issue but they can cause discomfort and may require surgery for Matz eventually. It remains to be seen how the Mets will handle this case, but prepare for the worst if you own Matz.

Mets | Steven Matz doesn't have structural damage

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 13:23:29 -0700

New York Mets SP Steven Matz (elbow) does not have structural damage in his arm, but he's still dealing with pain. His next start remains up in the air.

Fantasy Tip: That's good news that Matz's elbow injury doesn't appear very serious, but the Mets are likely to play it safe and skip his next turn in the rotation Wednesday. Even if Matz does start against the Washington Nationals, it'd be wise to avoid him until he proves he's fully healthy again.

Mets | Steven Matz's elbow still tight

Fri, 24 Jun 2016 20:54:58 -0700

New York Mets SP Steven Matz (elbow) allowed six runs, all in the fifth inning, on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings in a no-decision against the Atlanta Braves Friday, June 24, and he said afterward that he is still dealing with tightness in his elbow.

Fantasy Tip: Matz has struggled a bit recently, and his elbow could certainly be a factor. Stay the course in season-long leagues, but he is a risky DFS play right now.

Mets | A cautious start for Steven Matz Friday

Thu, 23 Jun 2016 13:15:32 -0700

New York Mets SP Steven Matz (elbow) will have his start against the Atlanta Braves approached cautiously Friday, June 24, according to manager Terry Collins.

Fantasy Tip: Matz has battled injuries since debuting in the majors last season, but when on the hill, he delivers. Through his 18 career starts, Matz owns a 2.58 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP and a 8.9 K/9. View him as a No. 2 hurler for your virtual rotation, but he clearly comes with a little more risk than usual Friday.

Mets | Something wrong with Steven Matz?

Mon, 20 Jun 2016 19:48:37 -0700

New York Mets SP Steven Matz (elbow) is not operating the same as earlier in the season, and a scout following the team believes something is wrong. "(Steven) Matz is not right. I don't care what the Mets say," said the scout. "Way too much effort. Cutting off his finish to the plate as if he is protecting something." He experienced some tightness in his elbow in his most recent start Saturday, June 18.

Fantasy Tip: Matz hasn't won in four starts dating back to May 25, and he is 0-2 with a 4.24 ERA in three starts in the month of June. While he has tailed off a bit, he still has logged 20 strikeouts over 17 innings in June, and remains a top-flight fantasy option in all formats unless that tight elbow turns out to be more problematic.

Mets | Steven Matz bothered by tight elbow

Sun, 19 Jun 2016 06:15:57 -0700

New York Mets SP Steven Matz (elbow) experienced some elbow tightness during the final inning of his outing versus the Atlanta Braves Saturday, June 18. "Just a little tender, maybe a little fatigue," he said. "Just stuff you go through during the season. ... This is something you pitch through. It was just a little tight. ... It's been off and on. During the season you go through things. ... It's not a concern for me really." Matz allowed two runs on four hits over six innings in a no-decision Saturday, with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Matz doesn't seem overly concerned about the possibility of missing his next scheduled start versus the Braves Friday, June 24, but don't be surprised if his next turn is pushed back or skipped. The 25-year-old southpaw is 7-3 with a 2.74 ERA in 12 starts this year and has struck out 73 batters in 72 1/3 innings.

Mets | No run support for Steven Matz

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 20:42:28 -0700

New York Mets SP Steven Matz allowed two earned runs while scattering eight hits with two walks over five innings in a loss Tuesday, June 7, in Game 1 of a doubleheader against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He also struck out eight batters.

Fantasy Tip: Matz labored a bit, needing 101 pitches to record 15 outs, but he was able to post eight strikeouts to salvage the stat line. Despite the loss Matz remains a must-start across all fantasy formats and DFS play.
