Red Sox | Joe Kelly avoids arbitration

Fri, 15 Jan 2016 15:04:15 -0800

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly re-signed a one-year contract to avoid arbitration Friday, Jan. 15. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Fantasy Tip: Through 25 starts last season, Kelly allowed four earned runs or more in 10 games. However, he held opponents to three runs or fewer in each of his final eight outings and returned seven wins with a 2.35 ERA and 36 strikeouts through 46 innings. He is an under-the-radar option to take a swing at late in drafts this spring.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly unlikely to be traded

Mon, 07 Dec 2015 11:01:51 -0800

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly is unlikely to be traded this winter, according to a major league source familiar with the situation. Kelly is arbitration-eligible for the first time in his career.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly's amazing start to the year unfurled a bit in the second half, but he remains intriguing to fantasy owners in the later rounds because of his strikeout potential with a relatively new arsenal and top-notch heater. Even if Kelly remains in Boston, you shouldn't overlook him.

Marlins | Miami talking Boston starters

Mon, 07 Dec 2015 10:00:28 -0800

The Miami Marlins are having trade discussions with the Boston Red Sox for SPs Wade Miley and Joe Kelly. The Texas Rangers are also interested in both pitchers.

Fantasy Tip: Boston has a surplus of starters right now after signing Davis Price, so Miley and/or Kelly are apparently expendable. Both would benefit from a move to the National League and a pitcher's park in Miami. Kelly is the more attractive fantasy piece because of his strikeout ability.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly could be shut down

Tue, 15 Sep 2015 22:39:26 -0700

Updating a previous report, Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly (shoulder) might be shut down for the season after suffering a shoulder injury Tuesday, Sept. 15. "That's something we'll talk about collectively as a group…and move forward with a really good decision," manager Torey Lovullo said.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly leaves start early

Tue, 15 Sep 2015 18:17:24 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly (shoulder) left his start Tuesday, Sept. 15, against the Baltimore Orioles due to right shoulder tightness and fatigue.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly ($6,900, 13.8% of cap) should be avoided in FantasyScore until he can officially return and prove his health. That would likely mean just one or two more starts for the season.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly turns heads Monday

Tue, 25 Aug 2015 16:04:39 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly impressed scouts with his pitching arsenal and ability to maintain high velocity late into the game Monday, Aug. 25. One scout said his secondary pitches were "plus-plus," while another noted the incredible transformation Kelly has made since he saw him in May.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) owns a 1.82 ERA with 20 punchouts through 24 2/3 innings over his past four starts, which were all wins. There have been flashes of this type of production at points in the past, so while you should remain a touch hesitant, time is running out to make an impact in seasonal leagues. Kelly is worth a speculative flier for owners looking for pitching help. At FantasyScore, Kelly could be worth a contrarian consideration for his next start against the New York Mets
