Red Sox | Eduardo Rodriguez coming up

Wed, 27 May 2015 10:43:53 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Eduardo Rodriguez will be called up from Class AAA Pawtucket to start against the Texas Rangers Thursday, May 28. He was 4-3 with a 2.98 ERA in eight starts in the minors and struck out 44 in 48 1/3 innings. Manager John Farrell said the team will go with a six-man rotation for a turn, with the plan to return Rodriguez to the minors. The other starters will all be pushed back a day. Farrell acknowledged that it may be hard to send Rodriguez back down if he pitches well tomorrow. SP Joe Kelly has struggled this year, has minor league options left and could pitch out of the bullpen if necessary. The Red Sox are also looking for an opportunity to call up SP Brian Johnson, who is 5-3 with a 2.92 ERA in nine starts for Pawtucket.

Fantasy Tip: Rodriguez should be picked up in all AL-only leagues, and he even warrants consideration in deep mixed formats if he stays in the rotation. However, starting him at FantasyScore tomorrow for a cheap price seems too risky. Joe Kelly ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) will probably need to turn in a fine performance in his next start to avoid being bumped from the rotation.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly neglecting curve?

Tue, 26 May 2015 15:46:39 -0700

Updating a previous report, Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly had a meeting with manager John Farrell and pitching coach Carl Willis Tuesday, May 26, and they encouraged him to use his curveball more often.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) gave up a whopping seven earned runs in just 1 2/3 innings his last time out, and he's allowed at least five runs in three of his five starts this month. If he doesn't improve in his next outing, there's a realistic chance he could be bumped from the rotation. Stay away from him his next time on the bump at FantasyScore.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly to be bumped from rotation?

Tue, 26 May 2015 10:17:47 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly, after another poor performance against the Minnesota Twins Monday, May 25, could be bumped from the starting rotation in favor of SP Eduardo Rodriguez. Boston had already been thinking about bringing Rodriguez up from Class AAA Pawtucket, and it appears that Kelly has one more start to convince the team he belongs in the rotation.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) has allowed at least five earned runs in three of his five starts in May. You shouldn't want to test the waters at FantasyScore with Kelly in what might be a make-or-break start in his next outing. For those in need of rotation help in AL-only leagues, put Rodriguez on your watch list.

Red Sox | No concerns for Joe Kelly

Thu, 21 May 2015 20:31:23 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly (wrist) is fine after having his right wrist wrapped after his start Wednesday, May 20, manager John Farrell said Thursday, May 21.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) has a 5.13 ERA on the year, but he has been solid in his last two starts. He could be worth gambling on as a source of cap relief at FantasyScore if he draws a friendly matchup.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly rebounds from bad outing

Fri, 15 May 2015 04:11:13 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly, who walked seven batters in his previous outing, allowed three walks, five hits and one run Thursday, May 14, against the Seattle Mariners. Kelly did not factor in the decision.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) had a nice effort against a Mariners team that can hit the ball. Games like this will make Kelly a better option all around, but for now He remains a pitcher to watch in certain matchup situations.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly activated from DL

Sat, 11 Apr 2015 09:28:39 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly (biceps) was activated from the 15-day disabled list Saturday, April 11. The team also optioned RP Steven Wright to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly ($3,200, 6.4% of cap) will be the starting pitcher Saturday but could be on a pitch count during the game. Owners on FantasyScore may want to see how Kelly does in a start or two before consider him as a starting option.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly likely for Saturday

Fri, 10 Apr 2015 07:09:04 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly (biceps) is likely to start Saturday, April 11, against the New York Yankees. Kelly impressed with his bullpen session Wednesday, April 8, and the team is leaning towards him starting over P Steven Wright.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly ($3,200, 6.4% of your cap) has shown flashes but has struggled to go deep into games. He's a low-end starting option on FantasyScore.

Red Sox | Steven Wright might start Saturday

Mon, 06 Apr 2015 18:23:44 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Steven Wright might make the start Saturday, April 11, against the New York Yankees if SP Joe Kelly (biceps) is not ready to come off the 15-day disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Even if Wright gets the nod FantasyScore owners likely want to avoid him on the road in a difficult environment.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly could start Saturday

Mon, 06 Apr 2015 14:41:38 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly (biceps) is still a candidate to start Saturday, April 11, but the team would like to see him throw 95 pitches in a rehab game before having him pitch in a game, according to manager John Farrell. Kelly threw 78 pitches over five innings in an extended spring training game Monday, April 6.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) probably will need at least one more rehab start, so he is likely a few weeks away from returning. Kelly probably will not be a starting option for owners on FantasyScore most nights.

Red Sox | Joe Kelly to pitch in minor-league game

Sun, 29 Mar 2015 07:00:58 -0700

Boston Red Sox SP Joe Kelly (biceps) will pitch in a minor-league game this week. This will allow for the Red Sox to start the season with Kelly on the disabled list with a backdated stint.

Fantasy Tip: Kelly ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) boldly proclaimed he could win the American League Cy Young award this season, earlier this offseason. If he's going to do that, it appears as though he'll have to do so with less than a full slate of starts. Kelly piled up a record of 6-4 in 17 starts last season for the Red Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals, with an xFIP of 4.19. Owners will need to see a lengthy string of quality starts before they give a roster spot to Kelly this season.
