Padres | Looking at backup options at 3B

Wed, 16 Apr 2014 18:29:56 -0700

San Diego Padres manager Bud Black said Wednesday, April 16, that the weakest backup position is third base, where INF Alexi Amarista started in place of the injured 3B Chase Headley (biceps). INF Ryan Jackson (wrist) is unavailable at Triple-A El Paso, so the team might look to 1B-OF Yonder Alonso or C Yasmani Grandal to play some third base if Headley is forced out for an extended period.

Cardinals | Daniel Descalso playing SS

Fri, 05 Jul 2013 13:20:32 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 2B Daniel Descalso is starting for the second straight day at shortstop with SS Pete Kozma being benched so that he can work on his swing. Descalso has hit .355 in his last 30 games and had three hits Thursday, July 4. However, manager Mike Matheny was careful to say that there isn't a platoon situation in the works at shortstop. SS Ryan Jackson is batting .306 with a .384 on-base percentage at Triple-A Memphis, but he isn't an option for the team's bench at this moment.

Fantasy Tip: The Cards haven't given up on Kozma just yet, so you should look to retain him in cavernous mixed leagues. Descalso deserves some short-term attention in NL-only leagues.

St. Louis Cardinals 3B David Freese (back) will begin the season on the disabled list. SS Ryan Jackson will make the team in his absence.

Fantasy Tip: He isn't expected to be out long. After the MRI came back clean, this is likely a move to give him more at-bats before throwing him to the lions in the majors.
