Braves | Manny Banuelos activated from DL, sent to AAA

Tue, 24 May 2016 22:33:04 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Manny Banuelos (elbow) was activated from the disabled list and sent to Class AAA Gwinnett on Tuesday, May 24.

Fantasy Tip: Step 1 for Banuelos is to prove he can stay healthy. The one-time Yankees prospect has had no shortage of troubles with his pitching arm, but if he can sort some things out in the minors the Braves could certainly give him a look.

Braves | Manny Banuelos throws session

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 07:56:00 -0700

Atlanta Braves P Manny Banuelos (elbow) recently threw a 20-pitch bullpen session. However, no timetable has been set for his return.

Fantasy Tip: Banuelos' lengthy injury history and command history make him someone that should be avoided in most fantasy formats.

Braves | Manny Banuelos still idle

Wed, 30 Mar 2016 12:15:47 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Manny Banuelos (elbow) has had more pain in his left elbow this week and hasn't thrown now since March 22, when he gave up five runs in 1 2/3 innings. Banuelos' MRI exam was clean, but he will not open the season in the rotation now. "I'm worried because I haven't been throwing," Banuelos said. "I just want to keep pitching. I don't feel good just coming here and doing the treatments. We'll take it day by day. I'm going to do whatever they tell me to do."

Fantasy Tip: Banuelos was once a top prospect for the Yankees, but elbow issues, including Tommy John surgery, continue to set him back. His command history doesn't bode well for him, either, so he could be toast at this point. Avoid him everywhere.

Braves | Manny Banuelos to debut Saturday

Fri, 11 Mar 2016 16:33:10 -0800

Atlanta Braves SP Manny Banuelos (elbow) will make his spring debut Saturday, March 12, after he had bone chips removed from his elbow last September. There's a good chance he'll win a rotation spot as long as he stays healthy, and Atlanta doesn't need a fifth starter until April 12.

Fantasy Tip: Banuelos was 1-4 with a 5.13 ERA in 24 innings last year, and he won't have a long leash in the rotation if he struggles. However, he's a former top prospect of the New York Yankees, so he might be worth a flier in NL-only leagues. Banuelos must show better command of his pitches in order to improve.

Braves | Manny Banuelos eyeing mid-April return

Sun, 06 Mar 2016 12:56:33 -0800

Atlanta Braves SP Manny Banuelos (elbow) is targeting Tuesday, April 12, to make his season debut.

Fantasy Tip: April 12 will be the first day the Braves need a fifth starter. Banuelos had arthroscopic elbow surgery last September and isn't necessarily guaranteed a spot in the rotation, but it should be noted the rebuilding Braves aren't exactly loaded with quality starting pitchers. While the 24-year-old Banuelos is off the fantasy radar for now, Atlanta believes the former top prospect of the New York Yankees is pain-free after years of elbow troubles.

Braves | Atlanta's rotation competition

Mon, 29 Feb 2016 14:57:23 -0800

Atlanta Braves SP Julio Teheran is expected to make his third straight Opening Day start this year, followed by SPs Bud Norris and Matt Wisler. SPs Williams Perez and Manny Banuelos are the top candidates for the final two rotation spots, along with SPs Aaron Blair, Sean Newcomb, Tyrell Jenkins and Lucas Sims. SPs Kyle Kendrick or Jhoulys Chacin are veterans who might make more sense.

Fantasy Tip: The Braves are clearly in rebuilding mode, and this is one of the weaker starting rotations in the bigs to begin the year. Teheran has value as a sleeper in mixed leagues, but all the others have major questions and are better left to those in NL-only leagues.

Braves | Manny Banuelos looking good

Tue, 23 Feb 2016 17:07:52 -0800

Atlanta Braves SP Manny Banuelos is impressing the coaches so far this spring. He did the same last year as a rookie before having arthroscopic surgery on his elbow in September to remove bone chips. Braves officials say Banuelos looks "free and easy" in his delivery, and it could be the first time he's been pain-free since Tommy John surgery in 2012.

Fantasy Tip: Banuelos once had promise as a Yankees prospect, but all of his arm injuries have set him back, and his post-hype days may be ending soon. For lack of better options, he should start the year in Atlanta's rotation. There's a glimmer of hope, but for now he's not worth drafting in typical fantasy leagues.

Braves | Manny Banuelos undergoes surgery

Thu, 17 Sep 2015 18:56:58 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Manny Banuelos (elbow) underwent surgery to remove bone spurs from his left elbow Thursday, Sept. 17, according to manager Fredi Gonzalez. He is expected to be ready in time for spring training.

Fantasy Tip: Banuelos finished the season 1-5 with a 5.13 ERA in six starts and one relief appearance this season. He can be dropped in all fantasy formats.

Braves | Manny Banuelos' season likely over

Wed, 09 Sep 2015 15:17:06 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Manny Banuelos (elbow) will have his sore pitching elbow looked at by Dr. James Andrews again next week. Andrews performed Tommy John surgery on Banuelos back in 2012. Banuelos will be scratched from his start Friday, Sept. 11, against the New York Mets. Atlanta is cautiously optimistic that he doesn't have anything more serious than a bone chip and that he won't need surgery, but he's still likely to be shut down for the rest of the year as a precaution, regardless of what Andrews says next week. SP Matt Wisler is the leading candidate to take Banuelos' rotation spot and start Friday against the Mets. Ps Edwin Jackson and Sugar Ray Marimon are other possibilities, according to manager Fredi Gonzalez. Banuelos said he had been pitching with pain in his elbow for some time but that it wasn't anything serious.

Fantasy Tip: You can now drop Banuelos in any league that you still owned him. Wisler ($5,500, 11.0% of cap) isn't recommended for a start in your lineup on FantasyScore if he gets the nod against the Mets, who have been one of the hotter offensive clubs in the second half.

Braves | Manny Banuelos pegged for short outing

Tue, 01 Sep 2015 14:34:54 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Manny Banuelos (elbow) is expected to be limited to three or four innings during his start against the Miami Marlins Tuesday, Sept. 1, according to manager Fredi Gonzalez.

Fantasy Tip: With Banuelos ($4,800, 9.6% of cap) looking at a limited workload, his fantasy value is capped significantly Tuesday, and FantasyScore players should look elsewhere. The rookie's 4.51 FIP also highlights regression may be looming over his 2.49 ERA, and this will be his first start since being activated from the disabled list.
