The New York Mets avoided arbitration with RHP Jenrry Mejia Friday, Jan. 5, by agreeing to a one-year deal worth $1.729 million. However, this amount is unlikely to be paid since Mejia is serving a lifetime ban for repeatedly testing positive for using performance-enhancing drugs.

Mets | Jenrry Mejia receives lifetime ban

Fri, 12 Feb 2016 13:45:16 -0800

New York Mets RP Jenrry Mejia tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs for the third time and has received a lifetime ban from Major League Baseball.

Fantasy Tip: Three strikes and you're out. It's a sad story, but luckily for the Mets, Mejia wasn't exactly in the closer picture entering the 2016 season. Jeurys Familia had 43 saves and a sparkling 1.85 ERA in 2015 and is a top-10 fantasy closer.

Mets | Jenrry Mejia avoids arbitration

Fri, 22 Jan 2016 19:32:33 -0800

New York Mets RP Jenrry Mejia has avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year deal with the club worth $2.47 million.

Fantasy Tip: Mejia is currently serving a 162-game suspension for repeatedly using performance-enhancing substances and will not be eligible to pitch in the majors until August. He is unlikely to be used in high-leverage situations once he returns, so his value would be limited to NL-only leagues during the final weeks of the fantasy baseball season. Mejia earned $2.595 million in 2015 and would have had difficulty winning an arbitration case after being suspended multiple times.

Mets | Jenrry Mejia to receive contract tender

Mon, 30 Nov 2015 13:13:45 -0800

New York Mets RP Jenrry Mejia is expected to receive a contract tender from the Mets, according to sources. Mejia is currently serving a 162-game suspension for using performance-enhancing substances.

Fantasy Tip: Mejia projects to be eligible to return in August next season, which makes him a fantasy afterthought at this point. It is also unlikely he returns to high-leverage spots immediately, so at best, Mejia is a NL-only option over the final weeks of the 2016 season.

Mets | Jenrry Mejia suspended for 162 games

Tue, 28 Jul 2015 15:35:40 -0700

New York Mets RP Jenrry Mejia received a 162-game suspension Tuesday, July 28, after he failed a second test for performance-enhancing substances.

Fantasy Tip: Mejia was supposed to begin the season as the Mets closer, but he ended up playing in just seven games after making his return from the first suspension July 12. Mejia won't begin the 2016 season with any fantasy value, and he'll need to have a spot to return to in order to be an option later on in the year.

Mets | Jenrry Mejia activated

Tue, 07 Jul 2015 15:48:43 -0700

New York Mets RP Jenrry Mejia has been activated from an 80-game suspension for testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs. The Mets demoted RP Logan Verrett to clear a roster spot.

Fantasy Tip: Mejia had been the Mets' closer before he was suspended, but he'll face the tough task of climbing over Bobby Parnell and Jeurys Familia on the depth chart. Owners shouldn't be too concerned with Mejia at this point, but he will become a consideration for save opportunities if Familia starts struggling.

Mets | Jenrry Mejia set to rejoin team

Mon, 06 Jul 2015 16:30:20 -0700

New York Mets RP Jenrry Mejia is set to regain the team during their series against the San Francisco Giants as his 80-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs is coming to an end. He made his final rehab outing for Class AAA Las Vegas Sunday, July 5.

Fantasy Tip: With Jeurys Familia performing very well in the closer's role in the first half of the season, it seems highly unlikely that Mejia will have a shot at recording any saves, at least in the foreseeable future. He'll also likely be behind Bobby Parnell in the pecking order, so Mejia doesn't have much fantasy value at all.

Mets | Jenrry Mejia to work his way back

Tue, 23 Jun 2015 15:09:04 -0700

New York Mets RP Jenrry Mejia pitched a scoreless inning in the Gulf Coast League Tuesday, June 23. Mejia's suspension for performance-enhancing drug use is set to expire July 7.

Fantasy Tip: Mejia will have his work cut out for him to reclaim the closer's role he had at the beginning of the season. Jeurys Familia has been dominant with Mejia out of the lineup, and Bobby Parnell is also in the Mets' bullpen. Mejia will be worth keeping an eye on, but he won't be a fantasy option unless he reclaims the job.

Mets | Jenrry Mejia to begin throwing

Tue, 02 Jun 2015 05:31:17 -0700

New York Mets RP Jenrry Mejia (elbow) will begin a throwing program in around 10 days. Manager Terry Collins said he'll find a place for him in the bullpen somehow.

Fantasy Tip: Mejia isn't eligible to return from his 80-game suspension until July, but he has a long hill to climb to be entrusted in the closer role again.
