Yankees | Gary Sanchez has cracked thumb

Wed, 25 May 2016 15:56:21 -0700

Updating a previous report, New York Yankees C Gary Sanchez (thumb) was diagnosed with a cracked right thumb. He will test his hand and then be re-evaluated with an X-ray in two weeks.

Fantasy Tip: Unfortunately for the Yanks, it looks like one of their top overall prospects will be out for a while. Sanchez set a career high in home runs in the minors last year and is poised to be New York's catcher of the future with elite and raw power at the plate. You'll need to temper your expectations if you were already stashing him in dynasty leagues, as he may not be a realistic option in the bigs leagues again until 2017.

Yankees | Gary Sanchez could be out a while

Wed, 25 May 2016 15:37:04 -0700

New York Yankees C Gary Sanchez (thumb), the team's No. 3 prospect, could be dealing with a fractured right thumb. He is being sent to New York for tests.

Fantasy Tip: This would be a big blow to the Yankees' organizational depth at catcher. Sanchez was hitting .290 with six home runs and 26 RBI for Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this year and is New York's catcher of the future. He has plus power that will play nicely in the Bronx. Keep tabs on him in keeper/dynasty formats, and he's worth stashing in those leagues unless his injury turns out to sideline him for a long chunk of time.

Yankees | Luis Severino lands on DL

Sat, 14 May 2016 10:38:57 -0700

New York Yankees SP Luis Severino (triceps) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday, May 14, with a strained right triceps. C Gary Sanchez was optioned to Class AAA Wilkes Barre/Scranton. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said that Severino isn't guaranteed a rotation spot when he returns. He won't throw for a few days to rehab a mild strain in his right triceps that an MRI revealed. Cashman said he didn't believe the injury has had anything to do with Severino's poor start.

"His stuff's not there," Cashman said. "His arm strength is there, but his stuff isn't there. He doesn't have command of his fastball. He doesn't have command of his secondary pitches. His changeup and his slider have been inconsistent. It's not health-related."

Fantasy Tip: Severino's numbers are extremely rough in his first seven starts at 0-6 with a 7.46 ERA and a 1.69 WHIP. He climbed the ranks in the minors very quickly, and it's entirely possible they could send him down to iron out his stuff. If you own him, hold onto him for now. If he was dropped, grab him and stash him on the DL simply because of his promise. As for the open rotation spot, Chad Green has been dealing at Scranton/Wilkes Barre. He's 2-3 with a 1.22 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP and 36 K's in 37 innings. It's his first stint above Double-A, but he'll likely be considered with Anthony Swarzak. If you have a spot in AL-only leagues, Green is worth the speculative grab. Swarzak's light isn't as bright for now. As for Sanchez, he has a future, but an injury to Brian McCann may be the only way he sees an extended run.

Yankees | Gary Sanchez batting sixth vs. Chicago

Fri, 13 May 2016 12:36:22 -0700

New York Yankees C Gary Sanchez is batting sixth as the designated hitter against Chicago White Sox SP Chris Sale Friday, May 13.

Fantasy Tip: Facing Sale isn't the warmest welcome back to the show, so view Sanchez as a risky start in all fantasy formats Friday. However, with the New York offense reeling, he could see enough at-bats to warrant an add in the majority of fantasy leagues. For now, he is an immediate grab in deep mixed and AL-only settings. Through 27 games with Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Sanchez had a solid .288/.336/.541 slash line.

Yankees | Gary Sanchez promoted

Thu, 12 May 2016 21:02:47 -0700

New York Yankees C Gary Sanchez was promoted from Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Thursday, May 12.

Fantasy Tip: It remains to be seen how often Sanchez will play, but the highly-touted prospect is worth scooping up in two-catcher formats and deeper mixed leagues.

Yankees | Yanks have battle for backup catcher job

Sun, 28 Feb 2016 08:03:12 -0800

New York Yankees Cs Austin Romine, Gary Sanchez and Carlos Corporan will battle for the backup catcher position during spring training, according to manager Joe Girardi. "I don't care to come into camp and say, 'This person has no chance.' That's not fair to the player, and then I think you're narrow-minded," Girardi said. "You have to keep your eyes open."

Fantasy Tip: Whoever emerges as the winner of this competition won't see much playing time behind Brian McCann, who started 119 games last season. Sanchez and Romine may have a slight edge over Corporan because they are both on the 40-man roster and have had more experience working with the team's pitchers.

Yankees | Gary Sanchez ready

Wed, 11 Nov 2015 11:57:27 -0800

The New York Yankees feel that C Gary Sanchez is ready to step in next year if C Brian McCann suffers a serious injury.

Fantasy Tip: Sanchez is a big-time catching prospect for the Yanks that hit .274 with 18 home runs and 62 RBI in two minor league stops in 2015. He certainly will see time in the big leagues at some point in 2016 and should be picked up in dynasty and keeper formats.

Yankees | J.R. Murphy could start Tuesday

Tue, 06 Oct 2015 09:42:05 -0700

New York Yankees C J.R. Murphy could catch the wild-card game against Houston Astros left-handed SP Dallas Keuchel Tuesday, Oct. 6, over C Brian McCann. The Yankees have included C Gary Sanchez on their playoff roster, which would give the Yankees more flexibility to put McCann in the game when the Astros go to their bullpen.

Fantasy Tip: Either way you slice it, McCann ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) isn't a good option for FantasyScore owners. Even if he starts, McCann had just six of his 26 home runs against left-handers and is in a matchup to avoid. It's best to go cheap on catcher for the wild-card games.

Pirates | Andrew McCutchen wants to stay

Mon, 10 Nov 2014 00:50:43 -0800

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen has indicated he wants to stay with the team past the end of his contract in 2018 and wants to remain with the Pirates for his career. McCutchen does want a championship-caliber club surrounding him, and he suggested the first-base platoon of 1B Ike Davis and 1B Gary Sanchez caused more problems than intended.
