Cincinnati Reds CL Aroldis Chapman said he would prefer to remain the team's closer and is not interested in returning to the starting rotation. "I'm tired of every year the same thing about me either starting or closing," Chapman said in Spanish. "What I have in mind is closing games and that's it."

The Cincinnati Reds could use CL Aroldis Chapman for more than one inning more often in 2014. They have hinted at using him as a relief ace that nears 100 innings.

Cincinnati Reds general manager Walt Jocketty indicated in a conference call Wednesday, Dec. 4, that the team is leaning towards keeping RP Aroldis Chapman in the closer's role rather than starting him. While manager Brian Price wasn't ready to commit on Chapman's role, he said he is "comfortable" with Chapman in the bullpen. "We've had some internal dialogue on that," Price said. "I don't think it's something where I feel comfortable saying 'this is exactly what we're going to do'. I have my opinion on it. I know that his value for us that last couple of years has been as a closer."

New Cincinnati Reds manager Bryan Price said Tuesday, Oct. 22, that a decision will be made later on whether RP Aroldis Chapman will remain in the closer's role, or get a chance to move back into the starting rotation.
Fantasy Tip: Whatever role Chapman fills he is likely to be very successful, and a boon to fantasy owners. For what it's worth, Price has been a supporter of giving Chapman a chance in the starting rotation, so if there is a need for starting pitching, Chapman could get a chance there.

Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker said he won't use RP Aroldis Chapman in the eighth inning. "It's too early. Something happens to Chapman, you're stuck with the people everybody wants you to stay away from," he said.
Fantasy Tip: Maybe he could've used him in extra innings last night, right? Still, Chapman, regardless of when he's used, is one of the top RPs in baseball, so fantasy owners will appreciate his K's and saves.

Cincinnati Reds RP Aroldis Chapman allowed four hits and three earned runs while walking two and striking out one in only two-thirds of an inning in a non-save situation against the Chicago Cubs Friday, May 3. He threw 32 pitches in the outing, and RP J.J. Hoover pitched one-third of an inning with a strikeout to record his first save.
Fantasy Tip: Hoover only entered the game because Jonathan Broxton had already been used in the eighth inning. Chapman was likely not allowed to finish the inning because of his high pitch count. It won't be too alarming if Chapman is rested tomorrow night as a result. The outing is disappointing for Chapman's owners, but if it's any consolation, it came in a non-save situation.

Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker said RPs Aroldis Chapman (allergies) and Jonathan Broxton are both unlikely to be available in a save situation Tuesday, April 30. Chapman is dealing with allergies. "Chapman looked like hell. I don't think he's available tonight," Baker said. "I don't know if (Jonathan) Broxton is available tonight. We may have to close with somebody else. He's gone two days in a row and he threw 30 pitches the day before. I was a little apprehensive about using him last night. It's not the innings sometimes, but the workload of that inning." Chapman has also worked the last two days.
Fantasy Tip: Logan Ondrusek or Alfredo Simon are the likely options to fill in if a save situation arises tonight, but they shouldn't be added just for one night.

Cincinnati Reds RP Aroldis Chapman picked up the win Wednesday, April 17, without even warming up. He had retired the last three batters before the rain came the previous night in a 0-0 tie in the eighth inning. The Reds took the lead Wednesday when play resumed, making him the winning pitcher.

Cincinnati Reds SP Mike Leake will be the team's No. 5 starter after the club announced that RP Aroldis Chapman will be the team's closer. The team won't rule out Chapman starting in the future, though.
Fantasy Tip: Now that Leake has a rotation spot, he's definitely worthy of owning in NL-only leagues and cavernous mixed formats because of his solid command and good ground-ball rate. He'll have tough patches, though, if he fails to locate his pitches properly.
