Tigers | Joe Nathan dealing with dead arm

Wed, 09 Apr 2014 13:46:42 -0700

Detroit Tigers RP Joe Nathan (arm) said he's dealing with a "dead arm" right now. "Unfortunately there's no secret to getting through it quicker," Nathan said. "It's just one of those things that will hit guys throughout the course of a year and you never know when it is going to be or how long it is going to last but all you can do is continue to throw and throw through it and, hopefully, one day you come there and the ball is coming out of your hand a lot cleaner and with a little more zip on it." Nathan has allowed two runs in 2 2/3 innings this year and blew his first save chance April 2.

Fantasy Tip: The Tigers haven't given any indication that they'll shut Nathan down, but don't be surprised if he's rested during the team's next save chance. Al Alburquerque and Phil Coke could be used if that's the case.

Fri, 21 Mar 2014 09:57:21 -0700

Detroit Tigers RP Bruce Rondon (elbow) will need Tommy John surgery on his right elbow and will miss the entire 2014 season, according to general manager Dave Dombrowski. Rondon was a candidate to be the team's eighth-inning setup man this season. The Tigers have other candidates to fill Rondon's spot, like RPs Joba Chamberlain, Al Alburquerque, Ian Krol, Evan Reed, Luke Putkonen and Phil Coke, but the team isn't locked in to any one guy.

Tigers | Matt Tuiasosopo to DL

Fri, 21 Jun 2013 12:46:44 -0700

The Detroit Tigers placed OF Matt Tuiasosopo (intercostal) on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left intercostal Friday, June 21. The move is retroactive to June 20. In corresponding moves, the team recalled OF Avisail Garcia and RP Al Alburquerque from Triple-A Toledo.

Fantasy Tip: Garcia could split time in left field with the struggling Andy Dirks. Look to add Garcia only in AL leagues. Alburquerque could see valuable late-inning work now that Jose Valverde is no longer on the roster, but it remains to be seen if Leyland will trust Alburquerque for the occasional save opp if Joaquin Benoit is unavailable. That'll likely fall to Phil Coke or Drew Smyly, though.

Tigers | Al Alburquerque sent down

Thu, 16 May 2013 07:32:12 -0700

The Detroit Tigers optioned RP Al Alburquerque to Triple-A Toledo and recalled RP Evan Reed.

Fantasy Tip: Alburquerque has struck out 26 in 14 1/3 innings this year, but he's issued 13 walks and has thrown six wild pitches. He'll go down to try and harness his control.

Tigers | Al Alburquerque needs better command

Fri, 22 Mar 2013 10:01:34 -0700

Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland wants to see better command out of RP Al Alburquerque, who walked three and gave up four runs last Sunday. "Some guys need to step it up," Leyland said. "We'll find out. Performances are starting to get evaluated. It's getting late."

Fantasy Tip: With Detroit's ninth-inning duties undecided, this doesn't bode well for Alburquerque's chances to throw his hat in that ring. He gets plenty of swings and misses, but he won't be trusted by Leyland in the late innings if the walks continue to pile up.

Tigers | Won't overuse Al Alburquerque

Mon, 24 Sep 2012 16:51:07 -0700

Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland is careful not to overwork RP Al Alburquerque down the stretch. Alburquerque and RP Brayan Villarreal are not available in relief Monday, Sept. 24, after both relievers threw Sunday, Sept. 23. Alburquerque has a 0.00 ERA in his last five appearances, and he's allowed three hits and five walks while striking out 12 in 9 1/3 innings over that time. "He did terrific, there's no question about that," Leyland said. "The thing with Alburquerque is, for the rest of this season and spring training…. Let him continue to get back where he can settle in where you're not worried about him getting hurt. It doesn't mean he won't, but at least you feel more comfortable with it."
