Rockies | Rex Brothers walking the park

Tue, 15 Apr 2014 06:29:46 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Rex Brothers suffered a blown save in the eighth inning Monday, April 14, after allowing a run on three walks in an inning of work. He now has allowed seven walks and just two hits in 5 2/3 innings this year.

Fantasy Tip: For those that drafted him hoping that he'd beat out LaTroy Hawkins for the closer gig, those hopes have probably dimmed a bit. He still needs to be rostered in NL-only leagues, but he's very expendable in mixed leagues.

Rockies | Rex Brothers, LaTroy Hawkins unavailable

Thu, 03 Apr 2014 13:15:13 -0700

Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss said both RPs Rex Brothers and LaTroy Hawkins were unavailable to pitch Thursday, April 3. RP Chad Bettis would have closed if a save situation would have presented itself.

Fantasy Tip: That explains why Matt Belisle was on in the eighth inning with a one-run lead against the Miami Marlins. Belisle allowed four runs to be saddled with the loss.

Rockies | Could use closer-by-committee

Wed, 26 Mar 2014 14:42:29 -0700

Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss said he could use a closer-by-committee between RPs LaTroy Hawkins and Rex Brothers this season, depending on matchups in the ninth inning. Hawkins isn't a fan of the closer title, and he wouldn't mind it if Brothers sees the majority of save chances as the season progresses. "I love him," Hawkins said. "He's got a great arm. I've been saying it from Day 1, I'm just keeping that seat warm. That's all, just keeping it warm. When he's ready, I'll give it to him. That's Brothers' inning. He has way more years doing that job than I do."

Fantasy Tip: Brothers is widely seen as the more valuable commodity, since he has age and upside on his side. Both relievers are worth owning in mixed leagues, but they should come off the draft board after most of the other closer hopefuls do.

Rockies | Looking for setup help

Mon, 17 Mar 2014 00:47:17 -0700

The Colorado Rockies are looking at the trade market for a right-handed setup option. CL LaTroy Hawkins is likely to cede the closer role to RP Rex Brothers at some point, which would make Hawkins available (along with RP Matt Belisle) as a late-inning righty. Another source indicates the club prefers to give RP Chad Bettis or RP Chris Martin a chance before pursuing a trade.

Rockies | Rex Brothers more comfortable with physique

Wed, 12 Mar 2014 14:09:10 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Rex Brothers thinks he'll be better this season after reporting 10 pounds heavier this spring. He's listed at 210 pounds and looks slightly bigger in camp. Brothers is hoping the extra weight gives him more power and keeps him more consistent throughout the season. "Last year, I ran into a little trouble of not eating enough," he said. "I did change my diet a little bit, but when you clean up your diet, usually you have to eat more to fill up your body. It was trial and error, and I got a little bit fatigued. It's small, subtle things."

Fantasy Tip: Brothers has the skills to be the Rockies' next full-time closer, but he'll have to first open the season as the primary setup man to LaTroy Hawkins. Most drafters prefer Brothers, however, because of his age and up-and-coming skills. It seems like only a matter of time before Brothers is closing games again in Colorado.

Rockies | LaTroy Hawkins not guaranteed role

Tue, 11 Feb 2014 15:10:22 -0800

Colorado Rockies owner Dick Monfort said RP LaTroy Hawkins isn't necessarily the "everyday" closer this season. RP Rex Brothers could be used if a group of lefties is due up in the ninth inning in a save situation.

Fantasy Tip: This gives credence to the fact that Brothers is likely the better saves option over the full season than Hawkins. Hawkins should enter the year receiving more save chances, but that could change easily, and Hawkins has said in the past that he prefers pitching the eighth inning.

Rockies | LaTroy Hawkins to compete at closer

Fri, 22 Nov 2013 11:28:42 -0800

Colorado Rockies RP LaTroy Hawkins will compete with RP Rex Brothers for the closer's role in spring training next year. Hawkins went 3-2 with a 2.93 ERA and 13 saves for the New York Mets in 2013.

Fantasy Tip: Brothers performed well in his first taste of the ninth at the end of last season, and we fully expect him to win the job over Hawkins, who personally said he wasn't fond of closing out games last season with the Mets.

Rockies | Moving on from Carlos Ruiz

Wed, 13 Nov 2013 13:22:27 -0800

The Colorado Rockies are "moved on" from free-agent C Carlos Ruiz (Phillies) and are now focusing their efforts on finding a closer. RPs Rex Brothers and Chad Bettis are expected to fill setup roles.

Rockies | Decline option on Rafael Betancourt

Tue, 29 Oct 2013 14:33:22 -0700

The Colorado Rockies declined to pick up RP Rafael Betancourt's option for the 2014 season Tuesday, Oct. 29, making him a free agent.

Fantasy Tip: This signals the shift to Rex Brothers as the closer of the future. Brothers performed admirably with Betancourt injured this year and down the stretch. Look to him as a midrange closer option in 2014.
