Rockies | Rex Brothers sent down

Thu, 02 Apr 2015 05:35:31 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Rex Brothers was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque Wednesday, April 1. The team believes he needs more time to work on his mental game.

Fantasy Tip: Brothers started off strong, but he allowed six runs in 1 2/3 innings in a couple outings to blimp his ERA to 8.22 on the spring. He has been pegged the team's closer of the future, and he could take over if LaTroy Hawkins fades in his final season. Keep him on your watch list.

Rockies | Rex Brothers loses weight

Tue, 17 Feb 2015 09:44:03 -0800

Colorado Rockies RP Rex Brothers has reported to camp 10 to 12 pounds lighter after cutting out squats and leg presses in the offseason and moving to agility and movement exercises.

Fantasy Tip: Brothers is a nice speculation pick in the late rounds of mixed leagues for saves or as a handcuff to the aging LaTroy Hawkins.

Rockies | Rex Brothers being aggressive

Wed, 23 Apr 2014 13:12:05 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Rex Brothers succeeded in a jam against the San Francisco Giants in the eighth inning Tuesday, April 22, by being aggressive and attacking hitters. "Obviously we had a game plan in place, but for me it's just being aggressive. If I stray away from that, that's where the wheels start turning and I try to be a little fine. Make my pitches and don't worry about it," Brothers said. He has three strikeouts, one hit allowed and no walks in his last three scoreless outings.

Rockies | Rex Brothers walking the park

Tue, 15 Apr 2014 06:29:46 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP Rex Brothers suffered a blown save in the eighth inning Monday, April 14, after allowing a run on three walks in an inning of work. He now has allowed seven walks and just two hits in 5 2/3 innings this year.

Fantasy Tip: For those that drafted him hoping that he'd beat out LaTroy Hawkins for the closer gig, those hopes have probably dimmed a bit. He still needs to be rostered in NL-only leagues, but he's very expendable in mixed leagues.

Rockies | Rex Brothers, LaTroy Hawkins unavailable

Thu, 03 Apr 2014 13:15:13 -0700

Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss said both RPs Rex Brothers and LaTroy Hawkins were unavailable to pitch Thursday, April 3. RP Chad Bettis would have closed if a save situation would have presented itself.

Fantasy Tip: That explains why Matt Belisle was on in the eighth inning with a one-run lead against the Miami Marlins. Belisle allowed four runs to be saddled with the loss.

Rockies | Could use closer-by-committee

Wed, 26 Mar 2014 14:42:29 -0700

Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss said he could use a closer-by-committee between RPs LaTroy Hawkins and Rex Brothers this season, depending on matchups in the ninth inning. Hawkins isn't a fan of the closer title, and he wouldn't mind it if Brothers sees the majority of save chances as the season progresses. "I love him," Hawkins said. "He's got a great arm. I've been saying it from Day 1, I'm just keeping that seat warm. That's all, just keeping it warm. When he's ready, I'll give it to him. That's Brothers' inning. He has way more years doing that job than I do."

Fantasy Tip: Brothers is widely seen as the more valuable commodity, since he has age and upside on his side. Both relievers are worth owning in mixed leagues, but they should come off the draft board after most of the other closer hopefuls do.

Rockies | Looking for setup help

Mon, 17 Mar 2014 00:47:17 -0700

The Colorado Rockies are looking at the trade market for a right-handed setup option. CL LaTroy Hawkins is likely to cede the closer role to RP Rex Brothers at some point, which would make Hawkins available (along with RP Matt Belisle) as a late-inning righty. Another source indicates the club prefers to give RP Chad Bettis or RP Chris Martin a chance before pursuing a trade.
