Angels | Halos don't have extension talks planned

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 18:37:53 -0700

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim do not have any contract extension talks scheduled with OF Kole Calhoun and SP Garrett Richards. "I would be lying to tell you that the thought hasn't crossed my mind," general manager Billy Eppler said. "But we're not at that point. It's just not something I want to talk about while they're playing; while they're trying to perform."

Fantasy Tip: Entering play Wednesday, the 28-year-old Calhoun was batting .264 with two home runs and nine RBI, while the 27-year-old Richards was 1-3 with a 2.35 ERA through his first five starts, with 30 strikeouts in 30 2/3 innings. Calhoun should be viewed as an OF3 in mixed seasonal leagues, while Richards is a low-end SP2 or high-end SP3.

Angels | Garrett Richards records first win

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 10:12:56 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards recorded his first victory of the season against the Kansas City Royals Monday, April 26, by allowing just an unearned run in 6 2/3 innings, and he threw a four-seam or two-seam fastball on 33 of his first 36 pitches. "I'm going to throw the fastball until you prove to me that you can handle it and you can make the adjustment," Richards said. He allowed three hits while striking out five to lower his ERA to 2.35. Richards has more confidence in his landing leg now that he's a full season removed from knee surgery, and it has allowed him to re-integrate his two-seam fastball.

Fantasy Tip: Richards had run into some tough luck early in the season, but he has been pitching well with 8.8 strikeouts per nine innings and a 1.27 WHIP. His upper-90s fastball can generate plenty of swings and misses, although he can get in trouble at times with his control. Richards could return great value this year as your second or third starter.

Angels | Garrett Richards solid in loss

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 15:34:17 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards dropped to 0-3 Wednesday, April 20, against the Chicago White Sox. He registered 6 1/3 innings, surrendering two runs (one earned) on four hits and four walks. He also struck out six.

Fantasy Tip: Don't let his poor win-loss record fool you. Richards has been solid out of the gate in 2016, and in fact, he's now recorded three consecutive quality starts. He's also been useful for K's, having punched out six or more batters in all four of his assignments. The wins should start to come sooner than later for the right-hander, so don't sour on him just yet.

Angels | Garrett Richards still winless

Sun, 10 Apr 2016 05:10:02 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards allowed four runs -- two earned -- on eight hits and a walk while striking out six batters through 6 2/3 innings during the Angels' 4-1 loss to the Texas Rangers Saturday, April 9.

Fantasy Tip: Richards has met two tough offenses to start the season (Chicago Cubs and Rangers), so seasonal owners will want to remain patient with the hurler. Plus, it hasn't been all bad, Richards has posted a 26.0 strikeout percentage with 13 punchouts through 11 2/3 innings, and his current 3.86 ERA is likely 50 points higher than it will be at season's end. Richards will face the Minnesota Twins next, which projects much more favorably.

Angels | Garrett Richards to start opener

Tue, 29 Mar 2016 10:10:34 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards will start on opening day, with SP Andrew Heaney following him against the Chicago Cubs.

Fantasy Tip: Richards is a power pitcher that could go undervalued in your drafts before opening day. He also keeps the ball on the ground. His K/9 of 7.6 last season should improve in another year removed from a nasty knee injury. Richards can perform as an ace for stretches and can be had as your third fantasy starter.

Angels | Garrett Richards working on changeup

Mon, 14 Mar 2016 16:14:15 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards is working on a new changeup this spring that he fully intends to use this year. He did not throw a changeup at all the last two years and went 15-12 with a 3.65 ERA in 2015. Richards has a fastball that can reach 100 mph, and he's been throwing the changeup around 90 mph.

Fantasy Tip: Richards is already a ground-ball machine and showed elite swing-and-miss stuff (11.1% empty hacks) in 2015 despite an unfortunate 7.64 K/9. A new pitch could make Richards even more devastating as a nice bounce-back candidate worth eyeing in the early middle rounds as your third fantasy starter.

Angels | Garrett Richards reaches triple digits

Wed, 09 Mar 2016 12:37:30 -0800

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards threw a 100 mph fastball during his spring training start Tuesday, March 8. "I don't know what to think of that second outing in spring training," Richards said, "but my arm felt pretty good today."

Fantasy Tip: Richards has a 3.18 ERA, a 3.30 FIP, a 1.15 WHIP and 340 strikeouts through 376 innings over 58 starts the past two seasons. The high velocity this early in the spring is encouraging, and entering his third full season as a starter bodes well for Richards continuing his strong results on the mound. He is an excellent target in the middle of drafts because of his upside to be a high-end No. 2 fantasy hurler.

Angels | Garrett Richards to start Thursday

Mon, 29 Feb 2016 19:07:55 -0800

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards is scheduled to start the Cactus League spring opener against the Oakland Athletics Thursday, March 3. He and SP Jered Weaver are lined up to start Opening Day on April 4, against the Chicago Cubs, although an official decision has not come down.

Fantasy Tip: Richards posted 15 victories with a 3.65 ERA and 176 strikeouts over 207 1/3 innings. He yielded 20 homers, which was 15 more than his previous season, thus the increase in his ERA and WHIP. If he can go back to keeping the ball in the park he has the potential to be a front-line fantasy starter in all formats.

Angels | Halos rotation competition

Wed, 17 Feb 2016 17:09:30 -0800

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SPs Andrew Heaney and Hector Santiago are expected to be the final two arms in the starting rotation behind SPs Garrett Richards, Jered Weaver and C.J. Wilson. SPs Tyler Skaggs, Nick Tropeano and Matt Shoemaker are fighting to earn a spot this spring. A trade of a pitcher could open up a spot for a guy on the outside looking in.

Fantasy Tip: Of this group, Richards is the only one that should really excite fantasy owners in standard leagues. His ability to induce ground balls and miss bats makes him very intriguing in the middle rounds as a third starter. Heaney has some upside as a late-rounder in deep mixed leagues, but don't expect a true breakout.

Angels | Garrett Richards avoids arbitration

Thu, 21 Jan 2016 15:04:38 -0800

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards re-signed a one-year, $6.425 million contract to avoid arbitration Thursday, Jan. 21.

Fantasy Tip: Considering the severity of the knee injury Richards suffered in 2014, his 2015 season shouldn't be viewed too negatively. He checks out as a solid mid-rotation option for your fantasy club and worth a look in the middle rounds of drafts. There is upside for him to return to being a fringe No. 1 starter in all virtual leagues, too.
