Texas Rangers SP Martin Perez is working on adding a cut fastball this spring. He tossed a nine-pitch scoreless inning in an intrasquad game Tuesday, Feb. 25. "He's good good crazy stuff. He's got real good stuff. If he can pitch the way he's pitching, he's got some of the best stuff I've ever caught," C J.P. Arencibia said.

Texas Rangers SP Martin Perez would get the start if the team has to play a play-in game Monday, Sept. 30. "If we have to play this through and it's his turn on Monday, yes," manager Ron Washington said. "It's another challenge and experience for him to get. He deserves it just like every other starter deserves it." Perez has set a franchise record with 10 wins as a rookie.

Texas Rangers SP Martin Perez won his sixth straight start, which is a franchise rookie record, by beating the Oakland Athletics Tuesday, Sept. 3. "After the leadoff double, he was lights out," C A.J. Pierzynski said after the Rangers' 5-1 win at O.co Coliseum. "He had all the pitches going. He had a great changeup tonight, which has always been his pitch. But he really located his fastball well. And he also was able to throw two different types of breaking balls for strikes, which I think really kept them off balance." He gave up only one run and eight hits while striking out five and walking none in seven frames.
Fantasy Tip: Perez has come into his own in the second half of the season and is pitching with plenty of confidence. If he's still available on your league's waiver wire, snatch him up immediately.

Updating a previous item, Texas Rangers SP Matt Harrison (back, elbow) was diagnosed with left elbow inflammation after he left his last rehab start with Triple-A Round Rock experiencing numbness in his left hand. Doctors have advised him to shut it down for the rest of the season, although there is nothing structurally wrong with his back, and the team isn't worried about his elbow, either. "It was a significant injury, real surgery and we have every expectation he'll be 100 percent by this offseason and certainly by spring training. We were hoping to have him back this season, but it's not going to happen," manager Ron Washington said.
Fantasy Tip: Now that Harrison and Colby Lewis (hip) are done for the year, it appears that Martin Perez and Alexi Ogando are safe in the starting rotation. The team might look to limit them down the stretch by skipping them, though.

Texas Rangers SP Martin Perez allowed four hits, one run, two walks and struck out a career-high eight hitters in his first career complete game against the Houston Astros Sunday, Aug. 11. He also threw a season-high 115 pitches in the outing. He's 5-2 with a 3.30 ERA in 10 starts since being brought up from Triple-A Round Rock June 22.

Texas Rangers SP Alexi Ogando, who has gone as far as six innings just once in his five starts since May 10, might be the most in jeopardy of losing his rotation spot to make room for SP Colby Lewis (elbow), who is close to returning to the team. The team could keep Lewis on his rehab assignment through Aug. 16. SP Martin Perez is the only other pitcher in danger of being bumped out of the rotation.

Texas Rangers SP Colby Lewis (elbow) will make another rehab start for Double-A Frisco Saturday, Aug. 3, and he thinks he can return to the team after that.
Fantasy Tip: Lewis is available in most leagues, aside from some AL-only formats. He'll re-enter the rotation when he's ready, and he could push Martin Perez to the bullpen. It wouldn't hurt to stash Lewis in deep mixed leagues.

The Texas Rangers have discussed several prospects in trade talks with the Chicago Cubs about SP Matt Garza. SP Neil Ramirez and 3B Mike Olt have been discussed, while requests for SP Martin Perez were rebuffed. Ps Roman Mendez and C.J. Edwards are also possibilities.
