Yankees | Starlin Castro to hit lower in order

Tue, 26 Jan 2016 13:28:04 -0800

New York Yankees 2B Starlin Castro is likely to hit lower in the order since the Yankees have OFs Brett Gardner and Jacoby Ellsbury to set the table at the top. "I think you wait and see how things kind of pan out the rest of the offseason before you start thinking about where you're going to hit people, but I think (Castro) gives you a lot of flexibility," manager Joe Girardi said.

Castro hit .345/.368/.574 with six home runs and 25 RBI in 50 games after Aug. 4 last year after shifting to second base full time. Most of Castro's starts last year with Chicago came as either the No. 5 hitter (49) or No. 6 hitter (38).

Fantasy Tip: Castro still has some pop and should benefit from everyday playing time and a role at the bottom of the order. There's talk he could play some third base, too, which might give him infield eligibility at three positions. That'd make him even more attractive in the later rounds as a bounceback candidate.

Yankees | Starlin Castro to moonlight at third

Mon, 11 Jan 2016 13:55:32 -0800

New York Yankees 2B Starlin Castro is expected play some third base next season, according to general manager Brian Cashman.

Fantasy Tip: Entering his age-26 season, Castro already has 991 hits and 3764 plate appearances on his resume. Adding eligibility at third base would be a valuable bonus to his fantasy stock because he'll already boast status at shortstop and second base. Entering his prime offensive years, expect a slight bounce back from the fallen star. He did post a .335/.362/.555 slash line over the final two months of the season, after all.

Cubs | Chicago lands Adam Warren in trade

Tue, 08 Dec 2015 17:10:14 -0800

The Chicago Cubs acquired SP Adam Warren and SS Brendan Ryan from the New York Yankees Tuesday, Dec. 8, in exchange for SS Starlin Castro.

Fantasy Tip: The signing of Ben Zobrist in Chicago clearly spurred this move. Now the Cubs have more flexibility with Zobrist at either second base or left field. Javier Baez could also be on the trade block, and his fantasy value is in flux right now without a clear path to consistent playing time. Warren will likely be a swing man for the Cubs in either a starting role or as a long reliever. He doesn't carry much fantasy value but could be a cheap matchup play on FantasyScore if he sees time in a starting role. Ryan can be ignored everywhere.

Yankees | Starlin Castro traded to Yanks

Tue, 08 Dec 2015 17:04:59 -0800

The New York Yankees agreed to acquire 2B/SS Starlin Castro from the Chicago Cubs Tuesday, Dec. 8, in exchange for SP Adam Warren and a player to be named, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Castro has a change of scenery now and will be the everyday second baseman in 2016, pushing Rob Refsnyder and Dustin Ackley to utility roles. Castro goes to another hitter-friendly environment, and he could thrive back in a starting role for the Yanks. He's a fine target in the mid to late rounds of shallow mixed leagues as a sleeper candidate.

Yankees | Starlin Castro could be headed to Bronx

Tue, 08 Dec 2015 16:52:18 -0800

The New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs are closing in on a trade that would send 2B Starlin Castro to the Yankees, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: This would make plenty of sense now after the Cubs just signed Ben Zobrist to play second base. Castro is now expendable and could benefit from a change of scenery in another hitter-friendly park. If Castro dons pinstripes next year, he'd be worth a look as a sleeper middle infielder if he's guaranteed everyday playing time, which he likely would receive.

Yankees | NYY still interested in Starlin Castro

Sat, 21 Nov 2015 11:29:15 -0800

Updating a previous report, the New York Yankees remain interested in Chicago Cubs 2B Starlin Castro but are not willing to part with him for OF Brett Gardner, according to a source with knowledge of the organization's thinking.

Fantasy Tip: If the Yankees trade Gardner, it would likely be as part of a package for starting pitching help. Castro hit .265 with 11 home runs and 69 RBIs in 151 regular-season games in 2015 and is being shopped by the Cubs to multiple teams this offseason, including New York. If the Yankees stand pat at second base, Dustin Ackley and Rob Refsnyder would platoon at the position in 2016 but would only be worth drafting in AL-only and deep mixed fantasy leagues.

MLB | Yanks-Cubs talking trade

Fri, 20 Nov 2015 09:49:27 -0800

The New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs are discussing a potential deal that would send OF Brett Gardner to the Cubs in exchange for 2B Starlin Castro, according to a source. The Cubs are in desperate need of a center fielder with free-agent OF Dexter Fowler (Cubs) expected to leave in free agency. The Yankees are in need of a second baseman, and Castro made the move from shortstop to second in August.

Fantasy Tip: This is a potential trade that would likely benefit both parties involved and make their fantasy values more intriguing for the 2016 season. Castro, especially, would be in the clear for guaranteed playing time in the Bronx. Stay tuned.

Cubs | Starlin Castro expected to start at second

Thu, 12 Nov 2015 18:03:34 -0800

Chicago Cubs 2B Starlin Castro is expected to be the team's regular starter at second base next season, which could make INF Javier Baez expendable. Multiple teams have expressed interest in trading for him.

Fantasy Tip: Castro began the 2015 season as the Cubs' regular shortstop but was eventually replaced by Addison Russell. However, he ended up receiving regular playing time at the keystone position down the stretch. Castro hit .265 with 11 home runs and 69 RBIs in 151 regular-season games and could be a middle infield option in NL-only and deep mixed leagues, although he is a streaky hitter who is prone to deep slumps. Baez's power potential makes him a coveted player in dynasty and deep keeper leagues, although his opportunities to receive regular at-bats in Chicago will be limited, barring an injury to a starter or another infielder getting traded this offseason.

Cubs | Javier Baez to start at SS

Thu, 15 Oct 2015 11:36:36 -0700

Chicago Cubs 2B Javier Baez will start at shortstop in the National League Championship Series with SS Addison Russell (hamstring) injured. 2B Starlin Castro will remain at second base.

Fantasy Tip: Baez has four hits (one homer) in five at-bats with three RBI and a stolen base in the playoffs this year. He's an attractive young player, especially for his plus power, but he remains a sleeper pick on FantasyScore for now.

Cubs | Move to 2B good for Starlin Castro

Wed, 07 Oct 2015 12:14:20 -0700

Chicago Cubs 2B Starlin Castro has hit .353 since moving permanently to second base on August 11, which is third-best in baseball with a minimum of 100 plate appearances.

Fantasy Tip: Castro ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) isn't a bad FantasyScore choice at all in the wild-card round at second because of how hot his bat has been to end the season. He also has six hits in 17 at-bats (.353) with four RBI in his career against Wednesday's starter, Gerrit Cole.
