Rockies | Closer-by-committee for Rockies

Wed, 01 Jul 2015 10:08:44 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP John Axford was placed on the family medical emergency list Tuesday, June 30, for the second time this season. However, Axford's son, who was recovering from a rattlesnake bite in spring training, is fine this time. In Axford's absence, the team will use a closer-by-committee approach, with RP LaTroy Hawkins among the candidates to record saves. RPs Scott Oberg and Tommy Kahnle will also be options.

Fantasy Tip: Hawkins is the most experienced reliever for the Rockies and recorded 23 saves for the team in 2014. He also successfully recorded his second save of the season in a clean inning Tuesday night over the Oakland Athletics. He should be your first target if you're searching for saves or own Axford. It's unknown when Axford will be returning, so this could be an extended chance for save opportunities for Hawkins and the others.

Rockies | John Axford on inactive list

Tue, 30 Jun 2015 18:12:58 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP John Axford was placed on the temporary inactive list Tuesday, June 30. Manager Walt Weiss said Tuesday, June 30, that Axford's son, who was bitten by a rattlesnake in spring training, is fine. The pitcher "just has things to take care of at home."

Fantasy Tip: With Axford away from the team, if a save situation arises look for former closer LaTroy Hawkins or perhaps Boone Logan to get a look in the ninth inning.

Rockies | John Axford bounces back

Thu, 25 Jun 2015 19:36:45 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP John Axford threw a scoreless ninth inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks to pick up his 13th save in 14 chances Thursday, June 25. He blew his first save of the season the previous night.

Fantasy Tip: Axford has allowed five runs in his previous three appearances, but he returned to form tonight. He wasn't in immediate danger of losing his job, but it is still good to see that his recent rough patch didn't continue.

Rockies | Colorado confident in John Axford

Wed, 06 May 2015 09:16:12 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP John Axford, who is now in the closing role with RP Adam Ottavino (elbow) on the disabled list and possibly out for the year, has the confidence of his manager Walt Weiss. Axford has saved three games with five scoreless innings so far, and he's allowed three hits while striking out six and walking two. He led the National League with 46 saves in 2011 for the Milwaukee Brewers before losing the job each of the following two seasons.

Fantasy Tip: Axford should be owned in all leagues at this point now that he has the ninth-inning gig and no real challengers besides the veteran Rafael Betancourt, who will mainly be used in the eighth inning. Hold Ottovino in a DL spot for now, but be ready to cut him if he officially needs Tommy John surgery.

Rockies | Wilin Rosario sent down

Wed, 22 Apr 2015 14:46:08 -0700

Colorado Rockies C Wilin Rosario was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque Wednesday, April 22, where he'll play first base regularly. RP John Axford was called up in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Rosario ($2,500, 5.0% of cap) wasn't very useful to owners aside from those in deep NL-only leagues because of his inconsistent playing time. On the bright side, he did have five hits in 14 at-bats (.357) with a home run. You can now cut bait on him if you were holding him in deep mixed leagues.

Rockies | John Axford returns

Thu, 02 Apr 2015 17:56:01 -0700

Colorado Rockies RP John Axford returned to the mound Thursday, April 2, in a minor league game. Axford hadn't pitched competitively since Wednesday, March 25, when he left the team to be with his two-year-old son who was in an area hospital after being bit by a snake.

Fantasy Tip: Axford pitched a scoreless inning Thursday and is aiming for a spot on the Rockies' opening day roster. With 116 career saves, it is possible Axford could eventually gain closer duties at some point this season out of a thing Rockies' bullpen. He'll be worth keeping an eye on through the early part of the season.

Rockies | John Axford selected by COL

Mon, 02 Mar 2015 04:57:42 -0800

Colorado Rockies SP John Axford had his contract selected by the team Sunday, March 1. The move puts Axford on the 40-man roster. To make room for Axford, SP Tyler Chatwood (elbow) went to the 60-day disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: In all essence Axford has made the team and will pick up a $2.6 million salary. Axford could be a sleeper candidate in Colorado, but he should still go lower in most NL and mixed drafts given his shaky history and the fact he's pitching in Denver.
