St. Louis Cardinals OF Oscar Taveras is starting in center field Wednesday, July 9, against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Fantasy Tip: This is what fantasy owners are hoping happens more frequently going forward. Allen Craig, Matt Adams, Matt Holliday and Taveras are all in the lineup. Manager Mike Matheny said he would give Taveras time in center field depending on the stadium. Today's start comes at home, so Taveras could begin getting additional starts in center field if he plays well defensively. NL-only owners will want to monitor this situation closely, as Jon Jay and Peter Bourjos could lose even more playing time.

The St. Louis Cardinals are currently determining how to find big-league playing time for top OF prospect Oscar Taveras, but general manager John Mozeliak said it will likely come at the expense of someone else. "I actually think from a baseball standpoint he could play in the big leagues," Mozeliak said. "But we've got to determine playing time up here with the current roster. Are we at a point where we're willing to take away at-bats from the current roster and give them to somebody else?" If Taveras is called up it could be at the expense of OFs Allen Craig, Jon Jay, Peter Bourjos and Matt Adams.

St. Louis Cardinals OF Peter Bourjos (forearm) took a knee to his right forearm trying to break up a double play in the Saturday, May 10, game and was sore the following day. Manager Mike Matheny started OF Jon Jay in center during the Sunday, May 11, night game. Also, twice in the series, Bourjos banged off the wall in center making catches.

St. Louis Cardinals OF Oscar Taveras is inching closer to earning a promotion to the big leagues after hitting .359 and slugging .641 in his last 10 games with Triple-A Memphis. Taveras' ankle injury is no longer a concern. OF Randal Grichuk's promotion has given Taveras the chance to show that he's capable of playing center field, as well. However, the team won't discredit the play of OF Jon Jay, who is receiving more playing time over OF Peter Bourjos.
Fantasy Tip: As of now, promoting Taveras would be a luxury for the Cardinals. Taveras is very close, and an injury to one of the outfielders currently on roster would likely force their hand. If Taveras is out there in mixed leagues, now would be the time to grab him and get ahead of the game. In case you needed any more reason to ditch Bourjos, you have it.

St. Louis Cardinals OF Jon Jay has taken over the platoon situation in center field over OF Peter Bourjos, and manager Mike Matheny plans on riding Jay's hot stick. "We're getting the guys in there who are taking good at-bats. Jon Jay has been taking some good at-bats," Matheny said. "Allen Craig has turned the corner and right now looks good in that second hole. Peter Bourjos is going to get good opportunities against a left-hander tomorrow. But right now Jon is taking the kind of at-bats we've got to capitalize on. We've got to get something going. Any guy in that lineup has potential to get us going." Jay is batting sixth Tuesday, April 22.
Fantasy Tip: If you own Bourjos in a mixed league, now is the time to start looking elsewhere, as long as Jay remains hot and in the good graces of the skipper.

St. Louis Cardinals OF Peter Bourjos is starting in center field over OF Jon Jay on opening day Monday, March 31, even though Jay is 10-for-21 with three home runs in his career off of Cincinnati Reds SP Johnny Cueto. "Jay's had a good run against a very good pitcher. But what we see right now is that Peter Bourjos has had a very good spring," manager Mike Matheny said.
