Pirates | Juan Nicasio has another mediocre outing

Wed, 04 May 2016 14:48:02 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Juan Nicasio allowed four runs -- one earned -- on eight hits and three walks over 4 1/3 innings with just three strikeouts during the Pirates' 6-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs Wednesday, May 4.

Fantasy Tip: Nicasio was a victim of his pitch count escalating quickly, as he threw 102 pitches through those 4 1/3 innings. Nicasio was a preseason darling, and he has flashed some of the spring magic to start the year with a 3.16 ERA, a 1.34 WHIP and 32 strikeouts through 31 1/3 innings. However, he should be viewed as nothing more than an end-of-the-rotation arm for you fantasy roster.

Pirates | Juan Nicasio defeats Cincinnati

Fri, 29 Apr 2016 18:51:57 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Juan Nicasio (3-2) allowed three hits and one walk over seven scoreless innings in a victory over the Cincinnati Reds Friday, April 29, with eight strikeouts. He improved to 3-0 with a 1.89 ERA in three starts at PNC Park this year.

Fantasy Tip: Nicasio has 29 strikeouts over 27 innings through his first five starts and is worth considering as an inexpensive flier option in daily fantasy leagues versus most opponents. However, he should not be viewed as a safe choice for his next scheduled start against the Chicago Cubs Wednesday, May 4.

MLB | Pirates-Rockies postponed

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 10:42:18 -0700

The game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Colorado Rockies scheduled for Thursday, April 28, was postponed due to inclement weather. No makeup date was announced. Pirates SP Juan Nicasio was scheduled to face Rockies SP Tyler Chatwood.

Fantasy Tip: On a day with few games, the players to choose from just got smaller. Make sure to avoid any of the players from this game in daily fantasy, and it makes spending up for high-priced players like Jake Arrieta more palatable.

Pirates | Juan Nicasio allows 11 baserunners

Tue, 12 Apr 2016 14:22:10 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Juan Nicasio did not last long in his second start of the season Tuesday, April 12, opposite the Detroit Tigers. He went just three innings, yielding four runs on six hits and five walks. He also struck out four.

Fantasy Tip: Nicasio was a trendy sleeper pick coming into the season after his marvelous spring training, but following a successful first start, the 29-year-old seemed to resort back to his old self with the high number of walks. Even still, it was a tough matchup for Nicasio, so we'll just hope he gets back on track in his next outing. He's not worth deserting just yet.

Pirates | Juan Nicasio impressive versus Cards

Wed, 06 Apr 2016 19:38:05 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Juan Nicasio (1-0) allowed one run on two hits over six innings in a victory over the St. Louis Cardinals Wednesday, April 6, with no walks and seven strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: After striking out 24 batters during 15 scoreless innings in spring training, Nicasio carried over his stellar performance into his first regular-season outing. He makes an excellent value play in daily fantasy leagues while he's pitching well.

Pirates | Juan Nicasio cracks rotation

Wed, 30 Mar 2016 13:23:02 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Juan Nicasio will be the fifth starter to start the season, and SP Ryan Vogelsong will pitch out of the bullpen.

Fantasy Tip: Nicasio had a sterling spring with 24 strikeouts through 15 scoreless innings, and he has begun to climb up draft boards. However, the 29-year-old righty has 439 1/3 innings in the league without ever being a strong fantasy option. Don't overvalue him, but at the same time, don't shy away from using a late-round pick in mixed leagues on Nicasio. Vogelsong is nothing more than a low-end option in NL-only formats.

Pirates | Jeff Locke makes rotation

Tue, 29 Mar 2016 15:31:22 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jeff Locke will be in the starting rotation to begin the year. SPs Ryan Vogelsong and Juan Nicasio are still battling for the fifth and final spot. Locke has been experimenting with a new windup delivery this spring.

Fantasy Tip: Locke saw some control gains last year associated with more mechanical changes, but the bottom line is he doesn't generate enough swings and misses to be viable outside of cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues. Nicasio has been a big spring surprise with heavy strikeout numbers and could become the Bucs' latest reclamation project if he wins the job. Take a flier on him in deeper leagues.

Pirates | Juan Nicasio ready for any role

Sun, 27 Mar 2016 13:01:37 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates P Juan Nicasio said he is not sure if he will be used as a starter or a reliever but will be ready for whatever his role will be this season.

Fantasy Tip: Nicasio has pitched very well during spring training and has a solid chance to start the regular season in the rotation. Nicasio could be a late-round option in deeper mixed leagues if he is a starting pitcher but would lose some of his value if he begins the season in the bullpen.

Pirates | Juan Nicasio continues strong spring

Mon, 21 Mar 2016 12:12:57 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates P Juan Nicasio pitched five scoreless innings against the Minnesota Twins Monday, March 21. He allowed five hits and struck out eight batters during the game. Nicasio has struck out 24 batters in 15.0 scoreless innings this spring.

Fantasy Tip: Nicasio has pitched very well during spring training and could have a chance at the starting rotation if he continues his success. Nicasio would still bring value to owners if he is used out of the bullpen. Owners in deeper mixed leagues could consider selecting Nicasio in one of the final rounds of their drafts, and he should be owned in all NL-only leagues.

Pirates | Juan Nicasio strikes out 10 Wednesday

Wed, 16 Mar 2016 17:39:13 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates P Juan Nicasio recorded 10 strikeouts over four scoreless innings in an exhibition game against the Baltimore Orioles Wednesday, March 16. He allowed just one hit while facing 14 batters and has tossed 10 consecutive scoreless innings in Grapefruit League play.

Fantasy Tip: Nicasio's arsenal consisted of fastballs ranging between 92 and 95 mph, sliders in the 85-86 mph range and an occasional changeup. The Pirates are uncertain if he will be used as a long reliever/spot starter, a one-inning man out of the bullpen or as a member of the rotation. If he wins a starting job, he could be worthy of consideration in NL-only and cavernous mixed leagues.
