Yankees | CC Sabathia competing for rotation spot

Wed, 10 Feb 2016 09:01:03 -0800

New York Yankees SPs CC Sabathia and Ivan Nova are expected to compete for the No. 5 starting rotation spot this spring. Sabathia went 6-10 with a 4.73 ERA and gave up a career-high 28 home runs in 167 1/3 innings last season and will turn 36 in July. SP Bryan Mitchell will also be in the competition.

Sabathia did finish 2-1 with a 2.17 EAR in five September and October starts and gave up just two homers in 29 innings. Sabathia said last December he is already "light years ahead" of where he typically is in the offseason, and he expects to report to camp lighter than he has in years.

Fantasy Tip: Sabathia clearly isn't the ace pitcher he once was, but if he comes into camp lighter, stronger and more determined, he could be useful for stretches in the New York rotation. His decreased velocity and penchant for allowing home runs is a serious concern, so he's nothing more than a late-round flier in deep mixed leagues if he wins a rotation spot.

Yankees | Ivan Nova avoids arbitration

Thu, 28 Jan 2016 11:52:12 -0800

New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $4.1 million deal Thursday, Jan. 28. The deal includes some performance bonuses.

Fantasy Tip: Nova's return from Tommy John surgery last year didn't go over very well, as he went 6-11 with a 5.07 ERA in 17 starts and struck out only 6.03 hitters per nine innings. He's never been a big strikeout artist, but he should be able to improve there another year removed from the surgery, and his ability to live on the ground makes him a sleeper candidate. Nova is late-round flier material in deep mixed formats.

Yankees | Ivan Nova files for arbitration

Sat, 16 Jan 2016 12:26:09 -0800

New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova has filed for salary arbitration. He is seeking a one-year deal worth $4.6 million and the team has countered with a $3.8 million offer.

Fantasy Tip: Nova struggled in 2015, going 6-11 with a 5.07 ERA in 17 starts after returning from Tommy John surgery while posting a K/9 of just 6.0. The 29-year-old right-hander should be viewed as nothing more than a late-round flier in AL-only and deep mixed leagues.

Yankees | Ivan Nova may be available

Tue, 24 Nov 2015 13:01:54 -0800

New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova will be available in trade, sources indicate. He has one more year left on his contract and the team would like to obtain pitchers with several years of control left in their contracts.

Fantasy Tip: Nova was 37-18 with a 4.00 ERA from 2011-13, before he was sidelined by Tommy John surgery in 2014. Obviously the team hopes he has success along these lines. As for your draft, Nova is a risky pickup in anything but the lower rounds because he is several months removed from the elbow surgery.

Yankees | Masahiro Tanaka scratched from next start

Mon, 21 Sep 2015 09:19:36 -0700

New York Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka (hamstring) has been scratched from his next start against the Toronto Blue Jays Wednesday, Sept. 23, with a Grade 1 strain of his right hamstring. SP Ivan Nova will re-enter the rotation and take the start in Tanaka's place. Manager Joe Girardi is hoping that Tanaka will only miss one start after he injured the hamstring during his outing Friday, Sept. 18. Tanaka doesn't feel his injury is that serious. He had already beaten the Blue Jays twice this year and is the likely option if the Yankees have to play a one-game playoff in the wild card game.

Fantasy Tip: For now, hang onto Tanaka ($8,400, 16.8% of cap) in hopes that he makes another start this season. If he does, know that that start could come with plenty of risk while coming off an injury. Nova ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) isn't a smart choice for FantasyScore gamers Wednesday against a potent Toronto lineup.

Yankees | Ivan Nova could make another start

Wed, 16 Sep 2015 18:51:49 -0700

Updating a previous report, New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi hasn't ruled out having P Ivan Nova make another start this season.

Fantasy Tip: Nova ($5,100, 10.2% of cap), who is 6-8 with a 5.11 ERA through 14 starts this year, was recently demoted to the bullpen and will be available in relief during this weekend's series against the New York Mets. As long as he is out of the starting rotation, he should be avoided in FantasyScore.

Yankees | Ivan Nova heading to the bullpen

Wed, 16 Sep 2015 14:30:55 -0700

New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova has been removed from the starting rotation and will pitch out of the bullpen for the rest of the season.

Fantasy Tip: At this point, Nova ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) is safe to drop in all seasonal leagues. Through 14 starts, he posted a 5.11 ERA, 4.92 FIP, 1.40 WHIP and 5.5 K/9.

Yankees | Ivan Nova rocked Saturday

Sat, 12 Sep 2015 19:54:53 -0700

New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova allowed six runs on seven hits in 1 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Toronto Blue Jays Saturday, Sept. 12.

Fantasy Tip: Nova ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) has allowed at least three run in seven straight starts ad gas struck out four batters or less six times during the same stretch. He isn't worth using at FantasyScore right now.

Yankees | Ivan Nova faces struggling Indians

Thu, 20 Aug 2015 09:44:39 -0700

New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova (5-4, 3.57 ERA) is looking for his fifth win in his last six starts against the Cleveland Indians and SP Josh Tomlin (0-1, 2.84 ERA) Thursday, Aug. 20, at Yankee Stadium.

Fantasy Tip: Nova ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) faces a struggling Indians lineup that has batted .210 while losing four of their last five games. Nova has put up decent strikeout totals since returning to the Yankees rotation and has a good chance to walk away with a win tonight.

Yankees | Ivan Nova earns win Friday

Fri, 14 Aug 2015 19:09:18 -0700

New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova (5-4) allowed three runs on five hits over seven innings in a victory over the Toronto Blue Jays Friday, Aug. 14, with one walk and three strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Nova ($5,800, 11.6% of cap) had his longest start of the season en route to winning for the fourth time in his last five outings. He will make his next start against the Minnesota Twins Wednesday, Aug. 19.
