The New York Yankees have just two pitchers locked into spots for the rotation in 2014, SPs CC Sabathia and Ivan Nova. SP Andy Pettitte has retired, and SPs Hiroki Kuroda and Phil Hughes are impending free agents. The team is hopeful Michael Pineda will be able to lock up a spot in spring training, and SPs Vidal Nuno, David Phelps and Adam Warren are other potential candidates to compete for spots barring any help from outside of the organization.

New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova (9-5) tossed a six-hit shutout against the San Francisco Giants Saturday, Sept. 21, with one walk and seven strikeouts. Nova said the key to his success was discovering that he was tipping his pitches in his last outing against the Boston Red Sox, while manager Joe Girardi said he simply displayed better control in this game. It was Nova's second career shutout.

New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi indicated Sunday, Sept. 15, that he is not worried about the sore triceps of SP Ivan Nova (triceps), who started against the Boston Red Sox. "He's dealt with this for a while now, and we've managed it and continue to manage it," Girardi said. "There's been other times that he's mentioned it and I haven't told you."

New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova (triceps) is dealing with tightness in his right triceps, but he is still expected to make his next scheduled start Sunday, Sept. 15, against the Boston Red Sox, according to manager Joe Girardi.

New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova worked 7 1/3 innings in another win Wednesday, Aug. 14, against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He has now last at least seven innings in seven consecutive starts.
Fantasy Tip: Nova has re-emerged as a must-start fantasy option in all AL-only leagues and some mixed formats. He is eating up innings, and he is now 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA in three starts in the month of August.

The New York Yankees are considering using SP Michael Pineda (shoulder) out of the major league bullpen whenever he's eligible to return, according to a baseball official with knowledge of their thinking. He's more likely to stick at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre when he's ready to return, however. He's still working through his rehab and had a rough go Sunday, June 30.
Fantasy Tip: On the other hand, it's realistic to think he'd overtake David Phelps or Ivan Nova eventually, but that might not come until 2014 if Pineda can't prove he's healthy and the other SPs remain at least competent. Still, Pineda is a decent deep-league stash on his talent alone.

Updating a previous report, New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Tuesday, July 2, that SP Ivan Nova will make the start Friday, July 5, against the Baltimore Orioles in place of the injured SP Hiroki Kuroda (hip).

New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova threw in the bullpen Tuesday, July 2, and might be called upon to start Friday, July 5, against the Baltimore Orioles if SP Hiroki Kuroda (leg) is unable to take his turn in the rotation.
Fantasy Tip: Nova allowed two earned runs, six hits and no walks over 5 2/3 innings in a no-decision in his last start against the Orioles June 29, and he is 3-2 with a 5.43 ERA in nine career starts against Baltimore. If Kuroda cannot start, and you need an emergency replacement, Nova is worth using. Outside of deeper AL-only leagues, he should be avoided.

New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova will receive another start next week against the Minnesota Twins, according to manager Joe Girardi. The team is playing 20 games in the next 20 days, and Girardi would prefer that his current starters receive an extra day of rest. Also, Nova's last start against the Tampa Bay Rays earned him another start.
Fantasy Tip: Nova justifies a pickup in AL-only leagues now that we know he'll receive at least one more start (and probably more) before the All-Star break. The matchup against the Twinkies is a good one, too.
