Padres | Looking at backup options at 3B

Wed, 16 Apr 2014 18:29:56 -0700

San Diego Padres manager Bud Black said Wednesday, April 16, that the weakest backup position is third base, where INF Alexi Amarista started in place of the injured 3B Chase Headley (biceps). INF Ryan Jackson (wrist) is unavailable at Triple-A El Paso, so the team might look to 1B-OF Yonder Alonso or C Yasmani Grandal to play some third base if Headley is forced out for an extended period.

Tue, 25 Feb 2014 12:59:05 -0800

San Diego Padres manager Bud Black said INFs Ryan Jackson, Alberto Gonzalez, Alexi Amarista and Jace Peterson will see time at third base in spring training games with 3B Chase Headley (calf) sidelined.

Padres | Chase Headley has strained calf

Sat, 22 Feb 2014 12:38:13 -0800

San Diego Padres 3B Chase Headley (calf) could be sidelined for several weeks because of a strained calf. The team will have more information Sunday, Feb. 23, and he could undergo an MRI exam Monday, Feb. 24.

Fantasy Tip: If Headley is sidelined for an extended period of time, 2B Jedd Gyorko could wind up manning the hot corner in his absence, with INF Alexi Amarista expected to receive the bulk of the playing time at second base.

Padres | Ronny Cedeno recalled

Tue, 06 Aug 2013 12:55:26 -0700

The San Diego Padres recalled SS Ronny Cedeno from the minors Tuesday, Aug. 6.

Fantasy Tip: It's unclear how much Cedeno will play in San Diego with Everth Cabrera suspended for the remainder of the season. Alexi Amarista can also play short. Grab Cedeno for now only in NL-only leagues.

Padres | Everth Cabrera suspended

Mon, 05 Aug 2013 11:23:23 -0700

Major League Baseball announced that San Diego Padres SS Everth Cabrera will accept a 50-game suspension for his involvement in the Biogenesis scandal.

Fantasy Tip: Alexi Amarista is likely to take over the majority of playing time at shortstop with Cabrera done for the season. Logan Forsythe can probably fill in there, too, when needed, although he doesn't have the speed and quickness to play the position like Amarista does. Amarista's speed will make him a stolen base asset in deep mixed leagues.

Padres | Have options for SS

Wed, 19 Jun 2013 12:57:06 -0700

The San Diego Padres have options to play shortstop with SS Everth Cabrera (hamstring) headed to the disabled list. INFs Alexi Amarista, Pedro Ciriaco and Logan Forsythe can all fill in. Amarista struggled defensive at shortstop Tuesday, June 18. Forsythe has been filling in at second base with 2B Jedd Gyorko (groin) on the DL.

Fantasy Tip: Amarista and Forsythe will likely see the most playing time in the middle infield with Cabrera and Gyorko on the DL, with Ciriaco providing depth. Amarista and Forsythe will be short-term options for NL-only leaguers.

Padres | Logan Forsythe not ready for baseball activities

Wed, 15 May 2013 15:31:34 -0700

San Diego Padres 2B Logan Forsythe (foot), who is eligible to come off the 60-day disabled list May 22, will not start with baseball activities this week.

Fantasy Tip: Forsythe lost his chance to make a real impact in the infield for the Padres to open the season with Chase Headley out. Now, Headley is back and Jedd Gyorko has dug in at second base. Alexi Amarista has been effective as a super utility man, too, so Forsythe doesn't really have any spot to make a fantasy impact in.

Padres | Jedd Gyorko to move around

Fri, 29 Mar 2013 19:49:17 -0700

San Diego Padres manager Bud Black said Friday, March 29, that 2B Jedd Gyorko will play at second base, with 3B Cody Ransom at third base, when the team faces a left-handed starting pitcher. When the team faces a right-handed starter, Gyorko will shift over to third base, and 2B Alexi Amarista will get the start at second base.

Fantasy Tip: Gyorko is a must-have for all fantasy owners, as he'll play regularly, and will have eligibility at 2B, 3B, MI and CI. Amarista should play a little more than Ransom, but both are best used in NL-only fantasy leagues of 10 or more teams.

Thu, 28 Mar 2013 14:10:50 -0700

Padres | Logan Forsythe seeing specialist

Wed, 27 Mar 2013 14:17:00 -0700

San Diego Padres 2B Logan Forsythe (foot) is visiting with a specialist in San Diego after dealing with plantar fasciitis in his right foot. There is a chance that he'll need to start the year on the disabled list, according to manager Bud Black. 3B Cody Ransom will likely take his roster spot and could start at third base on opening day. 2B Jedd Gyorko could also move to third base with 2B Alexi Amarista playing second, but the chances are that Gyorko will remain at the keystone.

Fantasy Tip: This is a tough break for Forsythe. Ransom can probably be ignored in all leagues, especially if Forsythe can make it back before Chase Headley (thumb) returns from the infirmary.
