Eagles | Ryan Mathews practices Sunday

Sun, 07 Aug 2016 11:43:00 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) worked with the first-team offense during practice Sunday, Aug. 7, and appeared to be a full participant.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews is expected to be the starting running back for the Eagles this season but will have to share snaps with the other running backs on the roster. He should probably be considered a No. 2 or No. 3 running back in most fantasy leagues.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews returns

Fri, 05 Aug 2016 07:16:27 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) returned to practice Friday, Aug. 5.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews will be the primary runner, but he won't play many third downs. He loses a step in PPR leagues as an RB3.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews still out

Thu, 04 Aug 2016 05:35:18 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) remains out of practice Thursday, Aug. 4.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews isn't expected to see the field except on first and second down as he isn't a polished receiver. If you're in a PPR league, it's hard to take him until the RB3 range.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews timeline update

Sun, 31 Jul 2016 06:50:12 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) is not expected at practice until later this week, according to head coach Doug Pederson.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews averaged 5.1 yards per rushing attempt last season and has flashed high-end upside throughout his career. The issue has been his inability to stay healthy, and starting training camp on the sidelines isn't ideal, obviously. Still, he's a good bet to see the bulk of carries out of the Philly backfield and should be viewed as an RB2 in standard leagues. He has less allure in PPR settings, though.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews expected back next week

Fri, 29 Jul 2016 08:17:56 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) is expected to begin practicing next week, according to head coach Doug Pederson.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews figures to lead the backs in carries, but he'll come out on third down a lot in favor of Darren Sproles. If you're in a PPR league, he falls to an RB3, but he could be an RB2 in non-PPR leagues.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews placed on NFI list

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 13:23:24 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) was placed on the Non-Football Injury list Wednesday, July 27, after injuring his ankle while training last week. The team also signed undrafted free-agent WR David Watford (Hampton). Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews' injury does not appear to be serious, so he probably will participate in practice in the near future. He is probably the leading candidate to start this season but should lose some snaps to Darren Sproles and Wendell Smallwood during the season. Mathews can be a No. 2 running back in some fantasy leagues but is a risky option because of his injury history.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews not a great fit in offense

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 23:58:58 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews isn't a great fit in head coach Doug Pederson's offense as he wants to move his backs around to create mismatches for opposing defenses in the passing game.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews has never been a good receiver, and he has often been a two-down back. Mathews averaged 5.1 yards per carry last season, but he has had durability issues. With Darren Sproles likely to play on third downs and passing situations, Mathews is a high-end RB3 in fantasy. Sproles is a low-end RB3 in PPR leagues.

Eagles | Durability concerns for Ryan Mathews

Sun, 17 Jul 2016 20:54:51 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews has played in all 16 games in just one of his six NFL seasons, averaging 12 games per year overall.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews could easily produce RB2 numbers when healthy, but you have to expect him to miss at least a few games. Wendell Smallwood could benefit if Mathews does miss time, making him a sneaky, late-round stash.

Eagles | Running back committee in Philly?

Sun, 12 Jun 2016 12:12:05 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews has taken most of the first-team repetitions out of the backfield this offseason, but RBs Kenjon Barner and Darren Sproles shared those reps with Mathews, too. Head coach Doug Pederson expects a committee with those three backs and RB Wendell Smallwood.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews should still be the first Philadelphia running back taken in fantasy drafts, at least for standard formats. Sproles is a PPR delight and is worth a low-end RB2 to high-end RB3 spot in those formats.

Eagles | Kenjon Barner working with starters

Mon, 30 May 2016 02:51:57 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Kenjon Barner has been working with the starters during OTAs with RB Ryan Mathews (groin) slowed by injury and RB Darren Sproles not participating, and beat writer Eliot Shorr-Parks believes Barner's edge over Mathews in speed and agility could earn him the starting job permanently.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews could still end up seeing a lot of the early-down work, but Barner is worth grabbing in the later rounds, especially in PPR leagues. He could end up being a sneaky flex option.
