Eagles | Ryan Mathews to split carries?

Wed, 03 Jun 2015 23:10:20 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews is expected to be used in a timeshare with RB DeMarco Murray, offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur revealed Wednesday, June 3. Shurmur would not reveal what the percentage split for carries would be, however.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews has been injury prone over his NFL career, and Murray signed for big dollars, so an educated guess would be a 2-to-1 split in favor of Murray. However, if you plan to draft Murray it would be a good idea to target Mathews in the middle rounds just to be on the safe side.

Eagles | Chip Kelly favors one-cut runners

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 06:58:57 -0700

The Philadelphia Eagles traded RB LeSean McCoy to the Buffalo Bills because head coach Chip Kelly desires a one-cut running back, according to Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie. Lurie praised McCoy as a player, but the move was not financially driven. Kelly felt he could garner more production from a different running back or two. Lurie used the term "power spread" on multiple occasions to describe Kelly's offense. RBs DeMarco Murray, Darren Sproles and Ryan Mathews figure to share the work.

Fantasy Tip: Murray was one of the best players in fantasy last season, but there's almost no way he can repeat that kind of performance with two other legit backs wanting the ball. With Sproles an elite receiver from the RB position, Murray may find it difficult to repeat his 57 receptions from a year ago. Murray still rates as a mid-to-low RB1. Sproles is a capable RB3 in PPR leagues. Mathews' role is a little cloudy, but he is likely a low-end RB3 for now.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews will sign with PHI

Thu, 12 Mar 2015 13:48:29 -0700

Free-agent RB Ryan Mathews (Chargers) will indeed sign with the Philadelphia Eagles, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews will team up with newly acquired RB DeMarco Murray and RB Darren Sproles. Mathews' fantasy value will obviously be limited as Murray will likely be the starter. He should be considered a flex play unless Murray gets injured.

Raiders | Oakland high on Ryan Mathews

Thu, 12 Mar 2015 09:34:29 -0700

Free-agent RB Ryan Mathews (Chargers) has always had a suitor in the Oakland Raiders. Mathews agreed to a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles Wednesday, March 11, but he has yet to officially sign.

Fantasy Tip: It's not a done deal that Mathews goes to the Eagles, as he may change his mind if DeMarco Murray signs there. A move to Oakland would also pair him with a Murray in the backfield in Latavius Murray. Mathews' fantasy value is in flux right now, and it'll depend on where he signs. Stay tuned.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews yet to sign with Philly

Thu, 12 Mar 2015 09:17:13 -0700

Free-agent RB Ryan Mathews (Chargers) agreed to a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles Wednesday, March 11, but he hasn't signed it yet. It's unknown if he'll go through and sign if the Eagles sign free-agent RB DeMarco Murray (Cowboys).

Fantasy Tip: Hold your horses here on Mathews, folks. It's not a done deal, and he could change his mind if he sees that Murray is coming aboard. It would sure be a crowded backfield in Philly if it included Murray, Mathews and Darren Sproles. Mathews' fantasy value could vary wildly depending on what happens with this situation. Stay tuned.

Eagles | Philly still pursuing DeMarco Murray

Wed, 11 Mar 2015 11:23:44 -0700

Free-agent RB DeMarco Murray (Cowboys) is still being pursued by the Philadelphia Eagles, even though they just signed RB Ryan Mathews.

Fantasy Tip: Assuming he can stay healthy, Murray should be considered a No. 1 running back wherever he lands. If he were to join the Eagles, he would be joining a backfield that is becoming crowded with Mathews and Darren Sproles, so there may be some risk involved from a fantasy football perspective.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews agrees with Eagles

Wed, 11 Mar 2015 11:04:05 -0700

Free-agent RB Ryan Mathews (Chargers) has agreed to terms with the Philadelphia Eagles on a three-year, $11.5 million deal Wednesday, March 11, according to a source. The deal includes $5 million in guarantees.

Fantasy Tip: The Eagles are now banking on an oft-injured quarterback (Sam Bradford) and oft-injured running back in Mathews. It's quite the risk, but the upside is intriguing if they can both stay healthy. Because Mathews has been brittle, expect the Eagles to mix and match Darren Sproles and Chris Polk plenty in the backfield. Mathews should be valued as an RB3 with upside for more in this high-octane offense.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews likely to join Eagles

Wed, 11 Mar 2015 07:24:55 -0700

Updating an earlier report, free-agent RB Ryan Mathews (Chargers) is likely to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles Wednesday, March 11.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews could be a low-end RB2, but he's better served as a high-end RB3. He doesn't play on third downs, receive many red zone looks or catch a lot of passes. The latter could change in this offense, but we're not jumping out of our seats to take him as a second back.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews to visit Philadelphia

Wed, 11 Mar 2015 05:57:16 -0700

Free-agent RB Ryan Mathews (Chargers) will visit the Philadelphia Eagles Wednesday, March 11.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews doesn't play on third downs or catch a lot of passes, but he has enough talent to carve a niche in Chip Kelly's system. He will likely be a RB3 wherever he lands.

Chargers | Nothing doing with Ryan Mathews

Mon, 09 Mar 2015 19:17:07 -0700

The San Diego Chargers and representatives for impending free-agent RB Ryan Mathews met Monday, March 9, and there was some communication. However, a source said that nothing is happening right now, but that is subject to change.

Fantasy Tip: It's unclear if the Bolts are interested in bringing Mathews back or not, but his fantasy value is up in the air at this point. If he can land a starting gig he would obviously have more fantasy appeal than if he were in a timeshare or signed to be a backup. Check back once he signs or re-signs.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews reps to meet with SD

Sat, 21 Feb 2015 09:50:29 -0800

San Diego Chargers impending free-agent RB Ryan Mathews' reps are scheduled to meet with the Chargers at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Fantasy Tip: It is not known if the Chargers are interested in bringing Mathews back next season, so he could hit the free-agent market. Mathews' fantasy value will be determined if he earns a starting job and which team he joins. He could be an option in the middle rounds if he is a starter.

Chargers | SD will meet with Ryan Mathews' agent

Thu, 19 Feb 2015 00:25:41 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews, an impending free agent, has interest from the Chargers in a new contract. General manager Tom Telesco will meet with Mathews' agent at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews is a risky play at times due to his injury history, but when he is healthy Mathews racks up the yardage. He enters 2015 as a viable fantasy option when avoiding the injury bug.

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) did not participate in practice Thursday, Dec. 25. The Chargers did not practice Thursday, so this is an estimation.

Chargers | Keenan Allen, Ryan Mathews could return

Mon, 22 Dec 2014 13:34:12 -0800

San Diego Chargers WR Keenan Allen (shoulder, ankle) and RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) could return to the lineup for Week 17 against the Kansas City Chiefs, according to head coach Mike McCoy. Mathews has missed the last two games with a severe ankle sprain, and he hasn't practiced at all since his injury.

Fantasy Tip: Allen and Mathews will both be worth $5,555 at FantasyScore if they play. Running with either of them for your daily lineups will be a pretty big gamble if they're active, though. Eddie Royal ($5,555) and Malcom Floyd ($5,555) could be midrange flex plays against the Chiefs.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews not dressing

Sat, 20 Dec 2014 16:17:18 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) is inactive Saturday, Dec. 20, for Week 16.

Fantasy Tip: Branden Oliver ($3,000; 6.0% of your cap) draws the start, but he has a tough draw against the San Francisco 49ers. He has struggled since his breakout series of weeks earlier in the season, and he's a very suspect flyer on FantasyScore.

Fri, 19 Dec 2014 13:32:38 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (knee) and WR Keenan Allen (shoulder, ankle) have been ruled out for Week 16 against the San Francisco 49ers.

Fantasy Tip: With Mathews out, Donald Brown ($3,000) and Branden Oliver ($3,000) should see more work. Both are worth considering as sleeper flex options at FantasyScore. Allen's absence means more targets for Malcom Floyd ($4,300), Eddie Royal ($3,100) and Antonio Gates ($6,800). Royal represents the best value buy, but keep in mind that Philip Rivers has been banged up.

Fantasy Tip: It does not look good for Mathews to play in Week 16, so owners look to use other options this week. Branden Oliver and Donald Brown likely will receive time at running back if Mathews misses the game. Both cost $3,000 on FantasyScore and could be cheap flex options for owners.

Sun, 14 Dec 2014 12:45:27 -0800

Chargers | Ryan Mathews fine to play?

Fri, 12 Dec 2014 14:43:21 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle), who hasn't practiced all week and is listed as questionable for Week 15 against the Denver Broncos, could still be part of the game plan Sunday, Dec. 14, according to head coach Mike McCoy. "He'll be fine," McCoy said. "He's played plenty of football in his career, and he knows what to do. He's been here. He's been in the system for the two years we've been here together, so he'll be fine." RB Branden Oliver handled the bulk of the work when Mathews missed seven games this year, but since, he's had just 144 yards in six games.

Fantasy Tip: McCoy seems to be playing it coy in regards to Mathews' status against the Broncos. Because of all the uncertainy, and the fact that the Broncos are one of the best teams at stopping the run this year, it's best to avoid Mathews ($5,700) at FantasyScore.

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) did not practice Thursday, Dec. 11.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews hasn't practiced two days in a row now. If he does play, it's best to sit him against one of the best run defenses in the league. Mathews isn't worth the FantasyScore price of $5,700 this week.

Fri, 28 Nov 2014 12:27:05 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (shoulder) fully participated in practice Friday, Nov. 28, and is listed as probable for Week 13.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews should continue to receive a majority of the carries. Mathews has a price tag of $5,200 on FantasyScore but likely will not be a great option to use since the Baltimore Ravens have given up the fewest fantasy points to running backs this season.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews fully practices

Thu, 27 Nov 2014 14:13:44 -0800

Fantasy Tip: Mathews ($5,200, 10.4% of cap) has only rushed 28 times through two games since returning from his should injury. Chargers | Bolts managing Ryan Mathews' touches

Mon, 24 Nov 2014 16:32:38 -0800

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (knee, shoulder) has 175 rushing yards in two games since returning from a knee injury, but he's carried the ball an average of 14 times in those two games, with just four carries in the fourth quarter and two in the red zone. Head coach Mike McCoy said that team is monitoring Mathews' touches as he makes his way back from injury. RBs Branden Oliver and Donald Brown are still being sprinkled in. Mathews suffered a shoulder injury in the second half but returned to the game, and the injury isn't considered serious.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews looked healthy and spry against the St. Louis Rams in Week 12. However, be careful not to overvalue him heading into Week 13 in a very tough matchup against a strong Baltimore Ravens run unit on the road at FantasyScore.
