Eagles | Ryan Mathews practices Sunday

Sun, 07 Aug 2016 11:43:00 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) worked with the first-team offense during practice Sunday, Aug. 7, and appeared to be a full participant.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews is expected to be the starting running back for the Eagles this season but will have to share snaps with the other running backs on the roster. He should probably be considered a No. 2 or No. 3 running back in most fantasy leagues.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews returns

Fri, 05 Aug 2016 07:16:27 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) returned to practice Friday, Aug. 5.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews will be the primary runner, but he won't play many third downs. He loses a step in PPR leagues as an RB3.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews still out

Thu, 04 Aug 2016 05:35:18 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) remains out of practice Thursday, Aug. 4.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews isn't expected to see the field except on first and second down as he isn't a polished receiver. If you're in a PPR league, it's hard to take him until the RB3 range.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews timeline update

Sun, 31 Jul 2016 06:50:12 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) is not expected at practice until later this week, according to head coach Doug Pederson.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews averaged 5.1 yards per rushing attempt last season and has flashed high-end upside throughout his career. The issue has been his inability to stay healthy, and starting training camp on the sidelines isn't ideal, obviously. Still, he's a good bet to see the bulk of carries out of the Philly backfield and should be viewed as an RB2 in standard leagues. He has less allure in PPR settings, though.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews expected back next week

Fri, 29 Jul 2016 08:17:56 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) is expected to begin practicing next week, according to head coach Doug Pederson.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews figures to lead the backs in carries, but he'll come out on third down a lot in favor of Darren Sproles. If you're in a PPR league, he falls to an RB3, but he could be an RB2 in non-PPR leagues.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews placed on NFI list

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 13:23:24 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) was placed on the Non-Football Injury list Wednesday, July 27, after injuring his ankle while training last week. The team also signed undrafted free-agent WR David Watford (Hampton). Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews' injury does not appear to be serious, so he probably will participate in practice in the near future. He is probably the leading candidate to start this season but should lose some snaps to Darren Sproles and Wendell Smallwood during the season. Mathews can be a No. 2 running back in some fantasy leagues but is a risky option because of his injury history.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews not a great fit in offense

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 23:58:58 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews isn't a great fit in head coach Doug Pederson's offense as he wants to move his backs around to create mismatches for opposing defenses in the passing game.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews has never been a good receiver, and he has often been a two-down back. Mathews averaged 5.1 yards per carry last season, but he has had durability issues. With Darren Sproles likely to play on third downs and passing situations, Mathews is a high-end RB3 in fantasy. Sproles is a low-end RB3 in PPR leagues.

Eagles | Durability concerns for Ryan Mathews

Sun, 17 Jul 2016 20:54:51 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews has played in all 16 games in just one of his six NFL seasons, averaging 12 games per year overall.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews could easily produce RB2 numbers when healthy, but you have to expect him to miss at least a few games. Wendell Smallwood could benefit if Mathews does miss time, making him a sneaky, late-round stash.

Eagles | Running back committee in Philly?

Sun, 12 Jun 2016 12:12:05 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews has taken most of the first-team repetitions out of the backfield this offseason, but RBs Kenjon Barner and Darren Sproles shared those reps with Mathews, too. Head coach Doug Pederson expects a committee with those three backs and RB Wendell Smallwood.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews should still be the first Philadelphia running back taken in fantasy drafts, at least for standard formats. Sproles is a PPR delight and is worth a low-end RB2 to high-end RB3 spot in those formats.

Eagles | Kenjon Barner working with starters

Mon, 30 May 2016 02:51:57 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Kenjon Barner has been working with the starters during OTAs with RB Ryan Mathews (groin) slowed by injury and RB Darren Sproles not participating, and beat writer Eliot Shorr-Parks believes Barner's edge over Mathews in speed and agility could earn him the starting job permanently.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews could still end up seeing a lot of the early-down work, but Barner is worth grabbing in the later rounds, especially in PPR leagues. He could end up being a sneaky flex option.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews sitting out

Tue, 24 May 2016 07:47:43 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (illness) is out of practice Tuesday, May 24, due to illness.

Fantasy Tip: With all the buzz hovering over the quarterback situation, something that hasn't had much of a spotlight on it is that Mathews is in line to see the bulk of the work in the backfield. The team traded DeMarco Murray, and trade rumors surround Darren Sproles. Mathews could wind up a low-end RB2 in PPR leagues.

Eagles | Darren Sproles to be traded?

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 10:50:05 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Darren Sproles could be traded this offseason, in the opinion of NJ.com's Elliot Shorr-Parks. Shorr-Parks views Sproles as a logical and likely trade candidate, with Ryan Mathews and Kenjon Barner as the two running backs who will make the final roster.

Fantasy Tip: Sproles would be a valuable asset to any NFL backfield, and it would make sense for the Eagles to trade him if they want another draft pick after trading away so many for the No. 2 overall pick this year. Mathews figures to be the primary ball carrier for now, and he has RB2 upside if he can stay healthy.

Eagles | Two teams interested in Ryan Mathews

Fri, 15 Apr 2016 09:16:47 -0700

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews is a player the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys are interested in if the Eagles make him available. Sources said it's unlikely the Eagles would trade him to a division rival in Dallas or their former head coach Chip Kelly's new team in San Francisco.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews is a solid RB3 in PPR formats. His outlook will change drastically, though, if the team selects Ohio State RB Ezekiel Elliott at No. 8.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews could see boost in value

Mon, 07 Mar 2016 17:03:25 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews likely will generate more fantasy value if he stays with the Eagles because of the impending trade of RB DeMarco Murray.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews is in line to receive a majority of the work at running back if he stays with the team. He should be given the opportunity to produce in the running and passing game under head coach Doug Pederson. Mathews probably would be a No. 2 running back in most leagues next season and could have even more value in point-per-reception leagues because of his potential role in the passing game.

Eagles | Two Philly running backs available

Mon, 07 Mar 2016 11:52:42 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews is also available via trade, for the right price, in addition to RB DeMarco Murray.

Fantasy Tip: Murray's displeasure and lack of production with the Eagles have been well chronicled, but Mathews' availability is kind of a surprise. There is a new regime in town now, though, and they may want to start over, except for Sam Bradford of course. Darren Sproles may stay, too, and should be viewed as a low-end RB2 in PPR leagues.

Eagles | DeMarco Murray, Ryan Mathews to get FB

Sat, 23 Jan 2016 15:55:31 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RBs DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews are expected to have company in the backfield in 2016, as head coach Doug Pederson has liked to have a fullback on the roster and use him to block in the running game.

Fantasy Tip: Murray might especially benefit from a more power running game attack, similar to his last years in Dallas. He could be a big-time fantasy sleeper, as some stay away from him from a lack of production in 2015 under the old regime. Mathews will once again be a solid handcuff and mid- to late-round fantasy pick if and when Murray goes down.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews to sit about six weeks

Mon, 11 Jan 2016 11:12:50 -0800

Updating a previous report, Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (groin) is expected to be sidelined around six weeks after he recently underwent surgery, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews probably will be able to participate in some of the offseason workouts but will not be rushed back on the field. Mathews probably will have a similar role on offense next season and could be a middle- to late-round pick in most leagues.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews undergoes surgery

Mon, 11 Jan 2016 10:19:33 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (groin) recently underwent groin surgery, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews probably will miss some of the offseason workouts but should be ready for training camp if he does not suffer a setback. Mathews finished the 2015 season with 539 rushing yards and 146 receiving yards with seven total touchdowns. He may have a similar role next season and could be a middle- to late-round option in most drafts.

Eagles | DeMarco Murray plays eight snaps

Mon, 21 Dec 2015 05:22:15 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB DeMarco Murray played just eight snaps (12% of the offense) Sunday, Dec. 20. RB Darren Sproles played 30 snaps (47%), and Ryan Mathews played 26 (41%).

Fantasy Tip: Murray can't be used in fantasy right now. Sproles and Mathews splitting the work hurts each other's value, but they are decent flex options.

Eagles | DeMarco Murray says he's fresh

Fri, 18 Dec 2015 09:38:13 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB DeMarco Murray has seen his role in the offense reduced drastically the last two weeks, and through 12 games this year he has just 174 carries compared to 287 rushes through 12 games with the Dallas Cowboys in 2014. As a result, Murray said it's the freshest he's been this time of year. Despite voicing his displeasure to owner Jeff Lurie two weeks ago, Murray said he's happy and committed to returning to the Eagles next year. Murray had 11 carries last week to RB Ryan Mathews' 13 and RB Darren Sproles' seven.

Fantasy Tip: It's clear now that Murray ($4,900, 9.8% of cap) isn't the lead back in Philly anymore, and Chip Kelly is going with a three-headed committee in the backfield. That makes it really tough to rely on any one rusher in this backfield, especially in Week 15 against the top-five defense of the Arizona Cardinals.

Eagles | Darren Sproles leads team in rushing

Sun, 13 Dec 2015 14:29:18 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Darren Sproles rushed for 41 yards and one touchdown on seven carries against the Buffalo Bills in Week 14. RB Ryan Mathews rushed for 38 yards on 13 carries, while RB DeMarco Murray rushed for 34 yards on 11 carries.

Fantasy Tip: The Eagles spread the carries between the three runners but none had great success on the ground. All three probably will continue to receive carries with Sproles possibly being the most value in terms of fantasy because of his ability to produce in the running and passing game.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews probable to go

Fri, 11 Dec 2015 09:11:05 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (concussion, groin) practiced fully Friday, Dec. 11, and he's probable for Week 14.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews ($6,700, 13.4% of cap) is a risky flex grab against the Buffalo Bills on FantasyScore.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews back to full practice

Thu, 10 Dec 2015 12:17:50 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (concussion, groin) was back to a full practice Thursday, Dec. 10.

Fantasy Tip: It looks like Mathews ($6,700, 13.4% of cap) will finally return to action in Philly's backfield, further complicating the picture with DeMarco Murray ($4,800, 9.6% of cap) and Darren Sproles ($3,600, 7.2% of cap). In Mathews' first game back, this situation could easily shape up to be a large headache for fantasy owners against a strong run defense in the Buffalo Bills.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews limited

Wed, 09 Dec 2015 11:20:21 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (concussion, groin) was limited in practice Wednesday, Dec. 9.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews ($6,700, 13.4% of cap) could be a flex option on FantasyScore against the Buffalo Bills with DeMarco Murray seemingly being phased out.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews plans on playing

Tue, 08 Dec 2015 11:55:59 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (concussion) said he plans to play Sunday, Dec. 13, against the Buffalo Bills.

Fantasy Tip: The Bills provide a favorable matchup for Mathews ($6,700, 13.4% of cap) this week, but Darren Sproles ($3,600, 7.2%) and DeMarco Murray ($4,800, 9.6%) also figure to be involved as usual. It might be best to consider other options at running back.

Eagles | DeMarco Murray no longer lead back?

Tue, 08 Dec 2015 10:42:05 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB DeMarco Murray may no longer be the team's lead running back, especially with RB Ryan Mathews (concussion) returning to practice Tuesday, Dec. 8. Offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur did not confirm that Murray was still the leading running back, and the Eagles remain confident in all of their running backs. Murray had just eight carries for 24 yards in the win over the New England Patriots in Week 13, fewer than RBs Darren Sproles and Kenjon Barner.

Fantasy Tip: With the Eagles non-committal on Murray's ($4,800, 9.6% of cap) status in the backfield or workload, you'll want to avoid him on FantasyScore against the Buffalo Bills this weekend. In fact, staying away from this backfield entirely might be the best plan with Mathews ($6,700, 13.4% of cap) on his way back.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews back at practice

Tue, 08 Dec 2015 09:15:59 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (concussion, groin) returned to practice Tuesday, Dec. 8.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews ($6,700, 13.4% of cap) could fit back into the mix with DeMarco Murray being phased out. He matches up against the Buffalo Bills this week, and they've been susceptible to RBs the last five weeks. Mathews could be a flex consideration on FantasyScore.

Eagles | No update for Ryan Mathews

Mon, 07 Dec 2015 10:59:44 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly said he does not have an update on RB Ryan Mathews' (concussion, groin) status.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews has missed the last three games because of his injuries, so his status for Week 14 against the Buffalo Bills is uncertain at this point. Owners will need to keep an eye on his practice participation this week to see if he has a chance to play.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews out this week

Fri, 04 Dec 2015 08:44:34 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (concussion, groin) is out for Week 13.

Fantasy Tip: Darren Sproles ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) could see more action on passing downs, but he has been so little-used that he's not a good FantasyScore play against the New England Patriots.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews still out

Thu, 03 Dec 2015 09:19:58 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (concussion) remains in the concussion protocol Thursday, Dec. 3, and will not practice.

Fantasy Tip: Darren Sproles ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) would fill in on passing downs against the New England Patriots. He has been far too ineffective to use on FantasyScore.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews sits Wednesday

Wed, 02 Dec 2015 12:13:52 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (concussion, groin) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Dec. 2.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews ($6,700, 13.4% of cap) will miss another game if he isn't cleared to play this week. DeMarco Murray ($6,800, 13.6%) is still the Eagles' primary running back, but Darren Sproles ($2,600, 5.2%) could see more action if Mathews sits, especially in the passing game. The New England Patriots provide a decent matchup, but Philly's running backs have mostly disappointed in 2015.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews not cleared

Mon, 30 Nov 2015 10:40:12 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (concussion) has not been cleared to play at this point.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews missed the last game because of the concussion and could miss another game if he is not able to pass his concussion tests during the week. Owners will need to monitor the situation during the week to see if he has a chance to play. Owners should have other options ready in case he misses the next game.

The Philadelphia Eagles have declared DL Brandon Bair, CB Denzel Rice, WR Jonathan Krause, RB Ryan Mathews, QB Sam Bradford, OT Tanner Hawkinson, TE Zach Ertz inactive for Week 12.

Fantasy Tip: DeMarco Murray ($6,800, 13.6% of cap) will face a Detroit Lions defense that is in the median against the position the last five weeks. He could see more red zone opportunities with Mathews out. Murray is a high-end RB2 on FantasyScore.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews out Thursday

Wed, 25 Nov 2015 09:47:09 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (concussion) is officially out for Week 12 Thursday, Nov. 26.

Fantasy Tip: Darren Sproles ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) scored on a reception last week, but he rushed just six times for 21 yards and caught three passes. He can't be counted on at the midrange price on FantasyScore against the Detroit Lions.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews out for Week 11

Fri, 20 Nov 2015 07:02:33 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (concussion) is out for Week 11. RB Kenjon Barner will have a role Sunday, Nov. 22.

Fantasy Tip: Darren Sproles ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) would figure to have the first crack at replacing Mathews on third downs. Barner ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) doesn't figure to have a big enough role against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to be a FantasyScore factor. DeMarco Murray ($6,800, 13.6% of cap) should see a value bump as well, and he's a solid RB2 play.

Thu, 19 Nov 2015 08:54:08 -0800

Fantasy Tip: Mathews is rumored to be absent in Week 11. Darren Sproles' ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) role could increase, but ultimately DeMarco Murray ($6,800, 13.6% of cap) is a better play. Murray is a good RB2 on FantasyScore.

Fantasy Tip: Darren Sproles ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) is a dark horse play against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but DeMarco Murray ($6,800, 13.6% of cap) is at a good price on FantasyScore if Mathews is out.

Fri, 13 Nov 2015 11:31:51 -0800

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews (groin) practiced fully Friday, Nov. 13, and is probable for Week 10 against the Miami Dolphins.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews ($6,500, 13.0% of cap) has a good matchup this weekend, but he's a bit of a risk because DeMarco Murray has played well recently. Mathews is still a high-end flex option on FantasyScore.

Philadelphia Eagles RB Ryan Mathews carried 11 times for 67 yards and a touchdown in the Week 9 game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Fantasy Tip: Mathews ($5,800, 11.6% of cap) has carved out a nice role for himself in the offense despite the fact DeMarco Murray ($6,200, 12.4% of cap) has remained healthy and is striving lately. Both are useful FantasyScore options as an RB2 or flex option, with Murray having a little more value.
