Philadelphia Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said INF Freddy Galvis would be guaranteed a roster spot as a bench player this year. "His ability to play short, second, third and leftfield . . . I think he's a vital piece off the bench," Sandberg said.

The Philadelphia Phillies activated 2B Chase Utley (oblique) from the 15-day disabled list Friday, June 21, after he made two rehab starts with Double-A Reading.
Fantasy Tip: Get Utley back into your starting lineups. Freddy Galvis will go back to serving as a utility infielder.

Philadelphia Phillies 2B Chase Utley (oblique) swung a bat on Sunday, June 9, for the first time in nearly three weeks. He progressed to soft toss in the indoor cage with assistant hitting coach Wally Joyner on Wednesday, June 12, at Target Field. He doesn't have a target date for a return or a rehab assignment, but he's encouraged by the fact that he hasn't had any soreness since he started swinging. He hopes to participate in live batting practice this weekend in Denver. Utley said of an estimated mid-June return, "I think it's still realistic."
Fantasy Tip: Utley should check the calendar. Assuming that he has no setbacks, perhaps he'll begin a rehab assignment beginning next week, putting him on track to be back by the following weekend. Freddy Galvis and Kevin Frandsen will continue to split time in his place.

Philadelphia Phillies 2B Chase Utley (oblique) thinks he can return from the disabled list soon and thinks he can swing the bat, but he will wait longer to avoid any setbacks. "I am definitely feeling better," he said. "I'm hoping to take some swings in the next three or four days, and at that point I'll probably know where I'm at." Utley will likely need a rehab assignment before returning.
Fantasy Tip: When Utley returns, Freddy Galvis will lose all of his short-term value. Ride him in NL-only leagues until that point.

Philadelphia Phillies 2B Chase Utley (oblique) is recovering very slowly from his strained right oblique and is unlikely to return when eligible from the disabled list in 15 days. However, the team is stating that Utley hasn't suffered a setback in his recovery. Utley worked out Tuesday, May 28. "It's just tricky, so we have to be real careful and cautious," general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "I still think he feels tenderness in there, so we've got to be careful to not let it get to the point where it becomes more of an injury."
Fantasy Tip: Utley has been a notoriously slow healer in his career, so this doesn't come as a shock. His owners should have expected this and planned for it. It gives Freddy Galvis a boost in the short term in deep mixed leagues for middle infield depth.

The Philadelphia Phillies placed 3B Michael Young on the bereavement list Wednesday, May 29, and recalled INF Cesar Hernandez from Triple-A Lehigh Valley in a corresponding move.
Fantasy Tip: Young could miss as few as three games. Freddy Galvis will likely shift over to third base in the meantime, and any combination of Hernandez, Kevin Frandsen and Michael Martinez could play second base. Only Galvis should be owned in very deep leagues with Chase Utley (oblique) on the DL.

Philadelphia Phillies 2B Chase Utley (oblique) could return from a mild oblique strain when he's eligible to return from the disabled list in two weeks, but Utley is cautious in not rushing himself back. "We really won't know for another week or so, how it's recovering," Utley said. "Obviously I'd like to be back in 15 days. But I don't think it's smart to come back if it's not ready."
Fantasy Tip: Utley is widely known as a slow healer, so don't expect him to return in two weeks. Even Utley himself seems resigned to the fact that he won't rush to be ready within that time frame. He knows his body. That means Freddy Galvis will retain two-plus week value in deep mixed leagues.
