Tampa Bay Rays SP Jake Odorizzi is experimenting with a new changeup this spring as he competes for the fifth starting rotation spot. Odorizzi is using the same split-finger grip as SP Alex Cobb, and he's hoping to have similar success with the new pitch. SPs Erik Bedard and Alex Colome are also competing with Odorizzi for the No. 5 spot.

Tampa Bay Rays SP Jake Odorizzi will primarily compete for the No. 5 starting rotation spot with SP Alex Colome this spring. Odorizzi went 0-1 with a 3.94 ERA in seven major league games last year after going 9-6 with a 3.33 ERA in 22 starts for Triple-A Durham.

Tampa Bay Rays SP Jeremy Hellickson (elbow) underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow last week and is expected to be out until mid to late May. The surgery was done to remove loose bodies from his arm in what was a minor surgery, but he's expected to miss the first six to eight weeks of the season. He went 12-10 with a 5.17 ERA in 2013. SP Jake Odorizzi will likely be counted on to fill Hellickson's rotation spot. SPs Alex Colome and Enny Romero are other options.
Fantasy Tip: Odorizzi can be a late-round flier to fill out your rotation in deeper leagues. He leans more on control, like Hellickson, so his upside is limited, at least this early in his major league career.

Tampa Bay Rays SP David Price (triceps) pitched five shutout innings in his rehab start on Wednesday, June 26, for Class A Advanced Charlotte. He allowed two hits, walked one and struck out eight. Price said his left triceps, the strain of which landed him on the DL, felt fine after the outing, and he seems as if he believes that he's ready to come off the disabled list. His fastball was regularly between 92 and 94 mph, and he worked in all his secondary pitches.
Fantasy Tip: The Rays haven't announced a decision, but they could easily feel comfortable enough to have him return. It sounds like this time away may be enough to get Price back on track performance-wise in the bigs, too, so fantasy owners should be very encouraged about his outlook from July on. Alex Colome would be the odd man out in the Rays' rotation.

Tampa Bay Rays SP Alex Colome will stay in the starting rotation and make his next start against the Detroit Tigers Friday, June 28.
Fantasy Tip: It gives Colome a little bit more short-term value in AL-only leagues, but the matchup against the Tigers isn't intriguing at all.

Tampa Bay Rays SP Alex Colome will start Saturday, June 22.
Fantasy Tip: The 24-year-old right-hander won his major league debut May 30 against the Miami Marlins by tossing 5 2/3 innings and allowing one run. He's a ground-ball pitcher that features four pitches, although his secondary offerings need work. His stay in the rotation won't be long enough to warrant much fantasy attention, though.

The Tampa Bay Rays recalled RP Jeff Beliveau from the minors Friday, May 31, and optioned SP Alex Colome to Triple-A Durham in a corresponding move.
