Cardinals | Jonathan Dwyer won't return unless exonerated

Fri, 19 Sep 2014 09:14:10 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Jonathan Dwyer, who was charged in a domestic violence case involving his wife and young son, may not return to the team unless he's exonerated from his charges, according to head coach Bruce Arians. Dwyer was placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list, which means he can't return for the rest of the season. The Cardinals will continue to pay his $730,000 salary.

Fantasy Tip: If you own Dwyer in a deep league, it's safe to drop him at this point, since it'll likely be a while before his legal course plays out.

Cardinals | Stepfan Taylor to see more work

Thu, 18 Sep 2014 11:02:21 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Stepfan Taylor will likely see his role increased with RB Jonathan Dwyer deactivated indefinitely. Stepfan is a smaller back than Dwyer. Taylor and RB Robert Hughes have combined for two carries for four yards in two games as the team's third and fourth options. RB Andre Ellington (foot) also missed practice Wednesday, Sept. 17, and the team is hoping he can do some work Thursday, Sept. 18.

Fantasy Tip: Taylor could see more work as the season progresses, too, if Ellington's foot injury worsens. In FantasyScore lineups this week, Taylor will cost you the minimum of $3,700, but it's probably too early to rely on him.

Cardinals | More details on Jonathan Dwyer

Thu, 18 Sep 2014 10:44:50 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Jonathan Dwyer head-butted his wife and broke her nose after she refused his sexual advances, and he punched her in the face the next day, according to police. Dwyer was arrested on aggravated assault charges and was deactivated from all team activities. He spent a night in jail and appeared in court before being released Thursday, Sept. 18. Dwyer's wife left the state but came forward to authorities a week ago after Dwyer sent suicidal text message, including a picture of a knife. He's scheduled to have a status hearing Sept. 24 and a preliminary hearing Sept. 26.

Cardinals | Jonathan Dwyer deactivated

Wed, 17 Sep 2014 16:58:56 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Jonathan Dwyer has been deactivated from all team activities Wednesday, Sept. 17. The team was made aware of allegations by the Phoenix police and are cooperating fully with authorities. The team plans to closely monitor the situation as it develops and evaluate additional information as it becomes available.

Fantasy Tip: It is uncertain if Dwyer has officially been deactivated for the Week 3 game, but if so, Stepfan Taylor would see a bump in fantasy value playing directly behind Andre Ellington.

Wed, 17 Sep 2014 15:59:47 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Jonathan Dwyer is being questioned for a domestic violence incident, according to sources. However, he hasn't been arrested, and his status remains unchanged.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington active today

Sun, 14 Sep 2014 09:16:36 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington (foot) is active Sunday, Sept. 14.

Fantasy Tip: It's unknown if he will be limited, though. With QB Carson Palmer (shoulder) out, it's possible that Ellington and Jonathan Dwyer could receive more carries. Ellington is a solid RB2 at $5,500 (11% of your cap) on FantasyScore this week. Dwyer is more of a speculative flex play at $4,400 (8.8%) in Week 2, but he receives a boost in fantasy with Palmer out.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington limited Sunday

Mon, 08 Sep 2014 08:17:54 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington (foot) was limited again in the walkthrough Sunday, Sept. 7, according to general manager Steve Keim. The team will evaluate him in pre-game warmups Monday, Sept. 8, before determining whether he will play or not.

Fantasy Tip: Ellington carries a lot of risk at $7,000 (14% of your cap) on FantasyScore for Week 1. Jonathan Dwyer is an excellent bargain buy at $3,700 (7.4% of your cap) as a flex option in Week 1.

Cardinals | No surgery for Andre Ellington

Sun, 07 Sep 2014 16:11:02 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington (ankle, foot) consulted with three foot/ankle specialists and received different opinions, but all agreed no surgery is needed at this time. His injury is to the peroneus longus tendon. The tendon wraps down and under the foot by way of the cuboid bone. The options are having him wear a walking boot for two to three weeks to strengthen the muscle before returning, or not wear a boot and play in Week 1 against the San Diego Chargers Monday, Sept. 8. The team could brace the arch/foot and test him in pregame warmups.

Fantasy Tip: Ellington is considered questionable for Monday's game. While he wants to play, it is likely he does not go and Jonathan Dwyer gets a lion's share of the carries. At 14% of the cap in FantasyScore, Ellington is just too risky to use in an active lineup. Dwyer is an excellent flex option at $3,700 (7.4% of your cap) in Week 1.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington limited

Sat, 06 Sep 2014 15:40:37 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington (foot) was limited in practice Saturday, Sept. 6, and is questionable for Week 1.

Fantasy Tip: He's expected to be a game-time decision for Week 1. At $7,000 (14% of your cap) on FantasyScore, he's a risky RB1. RB Jonathan Dwyer ($3,700 - 7.4% of your cap on FantasyScore) makes an intriguing value buy this week if Ellington can't go.

Cardinals | Jonathan Dwyer prepared to start

Sat, 06 Sep 2014 10:37:56 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Jonathan Dwyer said he's prepared to start this week if RB Andre Ellington (foot) can't play. Dwyer said each running back prepares as if they're going to start every week.

Fantasy Tip: Dwyer wouldn't be the most attractive option in starting lineups if he does start, but could provide some value at a price of $3,700 on FantasyScore.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington not at practice

Fri, 05 Sep 2014 13:44:03 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington (foot) was not present at practice Friday, Sept. 5, and he's scheduled to be looked at by a local foot specialist. It's unknown if he'll be able to play in Week 1 against the San Diego Chargers Monday, Sept. 8. If he can't go, RB Jonathan Dwyer will start in his place. Dwyer had 49 carries for 197 yards with the Pittsburgh Steelers last season.

Fantasy Tip: With the Cardinals playing Monday, the no-brainer thing to do is sit Ellington, who is probably highly unlikely to play at this point. Dwyer has familiarity with head coach Bruce Arians from their days in Pittsburgh, so he'll see the first chance to replace Ellington. Look to acquire Dwyer immediately if you own Ellington.

Cardinals | Ellington could miss 4-6 weeks?

Fri, 05 Sep 2014 10:46:34 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington (foot) could be out for four to six weeks or longer, depending on his prognosis. His timetable for a return will depend mainly on how quickly he heals.

Fantasy Tip: It's terrible news for anyone that spent a high draft pick on Ellington. You can be comforted to know that he at least isn't expected to need surgery. Regardless, you'll have to bench him for Week 1 and likely several more weeks. Jonathan Dwyer should be your first target on the waiver wire if you own Ellington, but we wouldn't advise starting him even though he's dirt cheap in FantasyScore this week ($3,700, 7.4% of cap).

Cardinals | Ellington could be out a while

Fri, 05 Sep 2014 08:35:23 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington (foot) aggravated his left foot injury in practice Thursday, Sept. 4. He underwent an MRI and could miss a significant amount of time.

Fantasy Tip: Bad news for the breakout candidate. We'll have an update, but start making contingency plans. Jonathan Dwyer is the fantasy football replacement to target. At $3,700 (a meager 7.4% of your cap), he's a good dice roll in FantasyScore. But Stepfan Taylor might be more heavily involved as well, so Dwyer may not be an ideal play.

Cardinals | Stepfan Taylor listed as No. 2 RB

Wed, 06 Aug 2014 17:10:08 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington tops the team's first depth chart of the preseason, with RBs Jalen Parmelee and Stepfan Taylor listed on the second-team offense. RBs Jonathan Dwyer and Zach Bauman are listed on the third-team offense, with RBs Robert Hughes and Damian Thigpen on the fourth team.

Fantasy Tip: The battle between Dwyer and Taylor is expected to be one of the more hotly contested in Arizona's camp. The winner of the battle (and don't count out Parmelee either!) will have some fantasy appeal as an RB3 or flex option in leagues of 12 or more teams, while the lose of the battle will only be worth a flier as a reserve in the final rounds on draft day.

Cardinals | Stepfan Taylor works with first-team

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 20:23:50 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Stepfan Taylor worked with the first-team offense in place of RB Andre Ellington (neck) Tuesday, July 29. Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com believes the move means that Taylor is ahead of RB Jonathan Dwyer in the battle for the No. 2 RB job.

Fantasy Tip: Should Ellington go down with an injury during the year or prove unable to handle the bulk of the carries, it looks like Taylor could be the back to grab. Keep his name in mind heading into the season.

Cardinals | No clear backup to Andre Ellington

Tue, 15 Jul 2014 19:42:26 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Stepfan Taylor and RB Jonathan Dwyer will both be used to spell RB Andre Ellington this season, according to ESPN.com's Josh Weinfuss.

Fantasy Tip: Unless Taylor or Dwyer can separate and become the clear No. 2 back, it is going to be tough to know which player is worth owning as a potential handcuff to Ellington.

Cardinals | Coach likes what he sees from Jonathan Dwyer

Wed, 02 Jul 2014 20:03:50 -0700

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said he has been impressed with how RB Jonathan Dwyer looked during offseason workouts. "He's in better shape and he's running routes and catching the ball better than I remember," Arians said. "I know he'll pound you and can really run the football. I know he can pass block. But he caught the ball extremely well. He made some catches in the red zone for us. That was a surprise."

Cardinals | Jonathan Dwyer endearing himself to coach

Thu, 12 Jun 2014 16:00:40 -0700

Arizona Cardinals RB Jonathan Dwyer received praise from head coach Bruce Arians during organized team activities for his pass-catching abilities. Dwyer also is effective in pass blocking, which is something that Arians covets in his offense.

Fantasy Tip: Stepfan Taylor is expected to be the main complementary back to Andre Ellington in 'Zona's backfield this year, but Dwyer could gain more traction if he continues to display the qualities that Arians likes. Dwyer would be more valuable in PPR leagues, but for now, he's undraftable.

Cardinals | Jonathan Dwyer signs

Wed, 12 Mar 2014 18:25:03 -0700

The Arizona Cardinals have signed unrestricted free-agent RB Jonathan Dwyer (Steelers) to a one-year contract. The contract's financial terms were not disclosed.

Fantasy Tip: Dwyer could have mild fantasy value, depending on how he is worked into a backfield that is full of young but largely unproven talent. He knows the system and could play a mentor role rather than making much of an on-field impact.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell hopes to play

Mon, 02 Dec 2013 13:51:37 -0800

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (concussion) did some running Monday, Dec. 2, and is hoping to play in Week 14 against the Miami Dolphins after suffering a concussion in the team's Week 13 contest. "I'm going to take it day by day and see where we're at," Bell said. "The goal is obviously to play but if (I'm) not able to I'm not able to." Bell doesn't remember the hit but hasn't had many lingering effects from the violent collision. He took an ImPACT test Sunday, Dec. 1, and will have to pass more concussion tests before being cleared.

Fantasy Tip: The good news is that Bell will have over a full week to recover from his ugly concussion. It will all depend on whether he passes the concussion tests this week. The fact that he's already running is a good sign, though. Felix Jones and Jonathan Dwyer will split the duties in the backfield if Bell isn't cleared. If Bell plays, he should be in your lineups against the Miami Dolphins. Jones and Dwyer are desperation flex plays.

Steelers | Big Ben unsure of Le'Veon Bell's return

Wed, 25 Sep 2013 11:23:16 -0700

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (foot) is expected to make his season debut against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 4, but QB Ben Roethlisberger isn't so sure of that. "Honestly, I have no idea with him," Roethlisberger said. "You can't get a read on him. One day, he's practicing, one day, he's not; one day, he's going hard, the next day, he's not. I wish I could." Bell was banged up in the preseason and only rushed four times for nine yards.

Fantasy Tip: Mike Tomlin continues to say that how much Bell plays on Sunday will depend on how he looks in practice this week. Stay updated on Bell's practice status, but we get the feeling that he'll be eased in against the Vikings before the team's Week 5 bye. It'd be unwise to rely on him this week. Felix Jones or Jonathan Dwyer are better options.

Steelers | Isaac Redman sinks to bottom of depth chart

Tue, 24 Sep 2013 12:45:01 -0700

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Isaac Redman, the team's Week 1 starter at running back, is now listed as fourth on the depth chart behind RBs Felix Jones, Le'Veon Bell (foot) and Jonathan Dwyer, in that order. Jones is the team's leading rusher with 71 yards and is averaging 4.2 yards per carry. Bell is expected to play in Week 4 against the Minnesota Vikings, but they'll likely ease him back into the mix.

Fantasy Tip: With Pitt's bye week in Week 5, they won't want to put too much on the shoulders of Bell immediately. He's the best back to own in this backfield long term, but Jones is probably the better play against the Vikes.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell expected to play

Tue, 24 Sep 2013 09:49:07 -0700

Updating previous reports, Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (foot) is expected to play in the team's Week 4 game in London against the Minnesota Vikings. Bell has progressed ahead of schedule from his injury.

Fantasy Tip: Bell may not be 100 percent this weekend, but it looks like there's a good chance he'll be on the field. A combination of Felix Jones, Jonathan Dwyer and Isaac Redman haven't gotten it done in three weeks. Dwyer looked solid last week, however, so he may split the carries with Bell this weekend.

Steelers | Jonathan Dwyer's role unclear

Thu, 12 Sep 2013 10:53:57 -0700

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jonathan Dwyer is unsure what his role will be heading into Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals. "They told me to get ready and play," Dwyer said. "I don't know exactly what I'm doing. I'm just getting myself ready to play." The Steelers finished with only 32 total rushing yards in Week 1, the second lowest around the league, and RB Isaac Redman fumbled twice and had only eight carries for nine yards.

Fantasy Tip: Redman has already been named the starter for Week 2, but that could change depending on how he fares early on. Dwyer is comfortable with the team and led them in rushing last year, so it's conceivable that he could become fantasy-relevant in a hurry with Le'Veon Bell (foot) out another month. Felix Jones hasn't been a quick study of the offense. Get Dwyer on the cheap if you're speculating and are in need of RB depth.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell could miss more time

Wed, 11 Sep 2013 07:56:48 -0700

Updating previous reports, Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell's (foot) injury is now being classified as a Lisfranc sprain, according to a source. The team is now hoping he returns in a month.

Fantasy Tip: Well, so much for those Week 3 hopes. The team has a bye in Week 5, and they'll play the New York Jets in Week 6. Isaac Redman, Jonathan Dwyer and Felix Jones will continue to share the work, with Redman the starter. Try to hold onto Bell for a few more weeks, but understand these things could eventually mean a lost season.

Steelers | Felix Jones not comfortable with offense

Tue, 10 Sep 2013 13:19:54 -0700

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Felix Jones is listed last on the team's running back depth chart, and head coach Mike Tomlin said Jones' lack of experience in the offense is the reason why he played very little in Week 1 against the Tennessee Titans. Recently re-signed RB Jonathan Dwyer is even listed ahead of Jones.

Fantasy Tip: With Dwyer back in the fold and Le'Veon Bell (foot) possibly returning next week, Jones' chances of making an impact in the running game appear very slim.

Steelers | Jonathan Dwyer's role unclear

Tue, 10 Sep 2013 10:34:20 -0700

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin would not indicate what kind of role RB Jonathan Dwyer would have in Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals. "That depends on his dependability," Tomlin said. "We'll play it by ear and see how he looks on the practice field and in the classroom." RB Isaac Redman will start the game.

Fantasy Tip: Le'Veon Bell (foot) is out another week, but he could return soon, so Dwyer doesn't have much short-term or long-term value. Leave him to the waiver wire unless something changes.

Steelers | Jonathan Dwyer returning

Mon, 09 Sep 2013 05:15:17 -0700

The Pittsburgh Steelers will re-sign RB Jonathan Dwyer.

Fantasy Tip: He's worth a speculative add. Isaac Redman fumbled and didn't do much in Week 1. Felix Jones didn't see a carry, and LaRod Stephens-Howling (knee) is out for the season. Dwyer could step right in and have a prominent role.

Steelers | Jonathan Dwyer cut

Sat, 31 Aug 2013 12:54:01 -0700

The Pittsburgh Steelers released RB Jonathan Dwyer.

Fantasy Tip: This is a minor surprise as Dwyer was expected to share duties with Isaac Redman. Redman appears to be the main back to own right now, with Felix Jones and LaRod Stephens-Howling also options. Redman becomes a RB3 or flex player. The rest of the field isn't worth owning right now, but this remains a fluid situation where anyone could nudge ahead.

Steelers | Isaac Redman expected to start

Tue, 27 Aug 2013 09:45:57 -0700

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Isaac Redman is expected to start while RB Le'Veon Bell (foot) recovers from his foot injury. RBs Jonathan Dwyer and LaRod Stephens-Howling will serve as the backups.

Fantasy Tip: Redman has some low-end RB2 or flex fantasy appeal if he does indeed start in Week 1 against the Tennessee Titans, who ranked dead-last in the NFL against the rush last season by allowing 178.0 yards per game.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell injury update

Wed, 21 Aug 2013 11:14:16 -0700

Updating a previous report, the Pittsburgh Steelers believe RB Le'Veon Bell (foot) has a Lisfranc injury but are hoping he will not need surgery. The team will not know if he will need surgery until he gets his second opinion.

Fantasy Tip: There is a chance Bell could miss a significant amount of playing time and could miss the entire season if he needs surgery. Bell probably should not be considered until later rounds of drafts because of the injury. Isaac Redman and Jonathan Dwyer should be moved up draft boards because they could start this season.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell expected to miss several weeks

Wed, 21 Aug 2013 10:21:42 -0700

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (foot) is expected to miss at least several weeks because of the foot injury he suffered in the second preseason game. The team has not completely diagnosed Bell's injury at this point.

Fantasy Tip: If Bell is not able to play Week 1, Isaac Redman or Jonathan Dwyer likely would get the start. Either would be considered a flex option if they got the start. It is not known how long Bell will be out, so owners could drop him down their draft boards because of the injury. He should be seen as a low-end No. 2 or high-end No. 3 running back for now. Steelers | More on Le'Veon Bell

Thu, 15 Aug 2013 16:30:34 -0700

Updating previous reports, Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (knee) aggravated his left knee Thursday, Aug. 15, when a teammate hit him in a non-contact drill. Bell didn't take another snap and had his left leg heavily wrapped after practice.

Fantasy Tip: Monitor Bell's progress over the next few days, but this injury doesn't appear to be too serious. Isaac Redman would be the next man up if Bell misses time. Jonathan Dwyer is also a possibility. Bell, if healthy, will receive the lion's share of the workload out of the backfield, though, making Redman and Dwyer unnatractive in most drafts.

Steelers | No depth chart for RBs

Wed, 12 Jun 2013 12:08:55 -0700

Pittsburgh Steelers running backs coach Kirby Wilson said the team does not really have a running back depth chart at this point. "There really is no pecking order other than that's how we ended the season. Guys are jumping in accordingly and rotating themselves. There really is no rhyme or reason to it," Wilson said. RB Jonathan Dwyer will enter training camp as No. 1 on the depth chart because he finished last season there.

Fantasy Tip: Le'Veon Bell is expected to be the frontrunner for the starting job at this point, but Dwyer and Isaac Redman will also be competing for the job. Bell could be a low-end No. 2 running back as well as a flex option depending on the matchup if he is the starter. Redman and Dwyer probably would be week flex options if one of them wins the starting job.

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell and Isaac Redman appear to be the only two running backs that are guaranteed a roster spot this season. RBs Jonathan Dwyer, Baron Batch and LaRod Stephens-Howling could compete for two roster spots during camp.

Steelers | New blocking scheme in the works

Fri, 24 May 2013 10:00:44 -0700

Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line coach Jack Bicknell Jr. is installing an outside zone, one-cut blocking scheme in organized team activities in favor of their old power and inside blocking scheme. The Steelers are changing their approach to take advantage of their big and nimble offensive line personnel. Pittsburgh got poor production from their running backs last year, and RB Jonathan Dwyer led the team in rushing with only 623 yards, the lowest total by a rusher in team history since Merrill Hoge ran for 810 in 1991. Bicknell had success with the blocking scheme with the Kansas City Chiefs last year. "We are going to be dedicated to the zone," RB Isaac Redman said. "We are still going to be a power team, but we are going to have this zone scheme in so we can keep the defense on its heels and keep them running."

Fantasy Tip: This new scheme should make Dwyer more productive, but many wonder if he has what it takes to be an every-down back in the NFL. Le'Veon Bell and Redman will spell him plenty, probably. Dwyer, as a result, is likely nothing more than a midrange No. 3 running back. Bell is worth a mid- to late-round pick, too.
