Patriots | Rob Gronkowski limited in practice

Wed, 28 Sep 2016 13:37:28 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) was a limited participant in practice Wednesday, Sept. 28.

Fantasy Tip: Gronkowski went without a catch and received just one target in his 2016 debut last week, which burnt anyone eager to receive a return on their early-round investment. However, New England was in control of the game throughout, and there was little need to press Gronkowski into action. Tom Brady returns from suspension in Week 5, and Gronkowski projects to return to being an elite fantasy option then. This week, he is best viewed as a high-risk, high-reward commodity given the unknown surrounding his health and the quarterback situation.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski avoids setback

Wed, 28 Sep 2016 08:55:06 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (back) said he suffered no setbacks by playing in Week 3.

Fantasy Tip: He should have a larger role in Week 4, but it might not be until Week 5 at Cleveland and with Tom Brady in tow that Gronk may be at full strength. He's a mid-to-low TE1 this week based on potential restrictions.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski quiet in debut

Thu, 22 Sep 2016 21:07:02 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) played 14 snaps in his season debut Thursday, Sept. 22, finishing without a catch in a 27-0 win over the Houston Texans.

Fantasy Tip: Despite the disappointing debut, Gronkowski owners have no choice but to sit and wait. Once he is healthy and Tom Brady is back under center, Gronkowski should be the clear No. 1 fantasy tight end.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski suiting up Thursday

Thu, 22 Sep 2016 16:59:45 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) is officially active for the team's Week 3 game Thursday, September 22, against the Houston Texans.

Fantasy Tip: Gronk will be making his 2016 season debut this evening, though owners shouldn't be expecting his usual standout performance. Not only will he be on a snap count, but he'll also be receiving passes from third-string quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who is making his first career start. It's hard to recommend benching Gronk because of his ceiling every time he takes the field, but it's certainly worth consideration if owners have another solid option at tight end.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski will play Thursday

Thu, 22 Sep 2016 14:20:48 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) will take the field against the Houston Texans Thursday, Sept. 22. It will be his first action of the 2016 season.

Fantasy Tip: Gronkowski is a must start whenever he plays no matter the circumstances, but those circumstances could be a lot better tonight. Rookie Jacoby Brissett is starting at quarterback, and the bright side is that Gronk could prove him with a nice safety blanket, although his ceiling is obviously limited without Tom Brady. He's a must-start in seasonal leagues, but fading him in the daily realm for at least a week could be the better play.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski plans to play

Thu, 22 Sep 2016 07:24:39 -0700

Updating an earlier report, New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) has told teammates all week that he plans to play Thursday, Sept. 22, against the Houston Texans.

Fantasy Tip: Gronk is a game-time decision, and he could be on a snap count if he plays. If he suits up, he's at worst a midrange TE1 option in DFS.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski will be game-time call

Thu, 22 Sep 2016 05:16:59 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) will be a game-time decision Thursday, Sept. 22, in Week 3.

Fantasy Tip: It sounds like there's a good chance he could make his season debut tonight, but he could be on a snap count. If he suits up, he's at worst a midrange TE1 option in DFS.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski listed as questionable

Wed, 21 Sep 2016 14:09:05 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) was limited in practice Wednesday, Sept. 21, and he is listed as questionable for the Week 3 game against the Houston Texans Thursday, Sept. 22.

Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners will want to double-check whether Gronkowski is active before locking him in their lineups Thursday. He's been a limited participant in practice all week, but if he's active, he should be started in all formats. Look for Martellus Bennett to take a fantasy hit in that case, but without Gronkowski active, Bennett remains a viable starting option with a higher floor in PPR settings.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski limited again

Tue, 20 Sep 2016 15:54:11 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) was limited in practice Tuesday, Sept. 20.

Fantasy Tip: It will be promising if Gronkowski is upgraded tomorrow, but the Patriots play Thursday night, so they may choose to rest him again either way. Martellus Bennett could be a safety blanket to either Jimmy Garoppolo or Jacoby Brissett, but he's not quite a TE1 consideration in a tough matchup with the Houston Texans.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski limited Monday

Mon, 19 Sep 2016 16:28:05 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) was limited in practice Monday, Sept. 19. Gronkowski's status is simply an estimation of what his practice activity would be as the Patriots only held a walkthrough.

Fantasy Tip: The reality of Gronk's situation is that he could be held out until Tom Brady returns in Week 5. As long as Gronk is out then Martellus Bennett will maintain his starting status. He broke out in Week 2 and could provide Jacoby Brissett with a safety blanket in Week 3. Bennett is a fringe TE1 if Gronkowski is sidelined again.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski out for Week 2

Sun, 18 Sep 2016 08:49:40 -0700

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) has been declared out for Week 2's game against the Miami Dolphins.

Fantasy Tip: TE Martellus Bennett is coming off a lackluster performance in the season opener, when he had just three receptions for 14 yards, but he is worth another look as a starting option in most fantasy formats. Gronkowski was a limited participant in practice last week and could make his season debut versus the Houston Texans in Week 3.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski unlikely to play

Sun, 18 Sep 2016 06:53:16 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) is not expected to play in Week 2's game against the Miami Dolphins, according to a source. However, he will participate in pregame workouts just to be sure.

Fantasy Tip: Gronk owners should monitor the inactive list before finalizing their lineups in the remote chance that he is deemed healthy enough to play, while DFS players should use safer options at the tight end position. He participated on a limited basis in practice throughout the week and appears to be slowly improving, so it would be a surprise if he isn't ready by Week 3. TE Martellus Bennett is worthy of consideration as a starting option in both standard formats and daily games this afternoon.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski listed as questionable

Fri, 16 Sep 2016 15:48:50 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) was limited during practice Friday, Sept. 16, and is listed as questionable for Week 2.

Fantasy Tip: Gronkowski may be a game-time decision again, so owners will need to keep an eye on the inactive list before finalizing their lineups. He probably will be limited if he plays in the game, so owners may want to look for other players to use in their lineups.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski 'probably' out Sunday

Fri, 16 Sep 2016 11:16:27 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) is limited in what he can do and will "probably" miss the team's Week 2 contest.

Fantasy Tip: Tough start to the year for Gronk and his fantasy owners, who likely had to sacrifice their first-round draft pick on his services in just about all leagues. Martellus Bennett will once again be the biggest beneficiary from this development, and although he underwhelmed in his first game with the Patriots in Week 1, he deserves another shot in fantasy starting lineups, having the ceiling of a TE1.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski on the field

Thu, 15 Sep 2016 10:05:15 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) is participating in practice Thursday, Sept. 15.

Fantasy Tip: It appears that Gronkowski is on track to play in Week 2, but owners should continue to monitor the situation. Gronkowski is a must-start option when he is healthy but could still be a decent option even if he is limited.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski limited Wednesday

Wed, 14 Sep 2016 13:30:30 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) was limited during practice Wednesday, Sept. 14.

Fantasy Tip: Gronkowski should be considered questionable for Week 2 at this point, so owners should keep an eye on the situation. He is one of the top fantasy players when he is healthy, but owners will need a backup plan ready in case he misses his second game.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski does not travel

Fri, 09 Sep 2016 15:40:04 -0700

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) did not travel with the team for their Week 1 game against the Arizona Cardinals, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Gronkowski will have to travel on his own if he wants a chance to play in Week 1, so owners should look for other options to use in their lineups. Martellus Bennett should have a bigger role in the offense this week and can be a solid starting option in fantasy leagues.

Fri, 09 Sep 2016 15:17:32 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) is listed as questionable for Week 1 but is not expected to play, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Owners should monitor the situation to see if anything chances with Gronkowski's status. Owners will need to have other options ready to use in their lineups. Martellus Bennett's value will increase if Gronkowski is not able to play and could be a fine option in most fantasy leagues.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski still limited

Thu, 08 Sep 2016 18:50:38 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) was a limited participant in practice Thursday, Sept. 8.

Fantasy Tip: Gronkowski could be limited in the season opener, but as long as he is playing in some capacity, he should be starting in all formats.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski should play

Thu, 08 Sep 2016 15:37:35 -0700

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) is expected to play against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1 barring an unexpected setback, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Gronk's status has been somewhat up in the air of late, but it looks like he'll be taking the field if he takes it easy leading up to the game. Even if he plays, though, he may be limited. Look for any updates on his status before kickoff. He'll still be a top tight end option if he's active.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski may be game-time decision

Thu, 08 Sep 2016 11:50:45 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) said he is still not 100 percent because of his hamstring injury and believes it is a week-to-week injury. Gronkowski said he expects to play in Week 1 if the coaches allow him, according to Jeff Howe, of the Boston Herald.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to continue to monitor the situation to see if Gronkowski will be able to play in Week 1. He will be a risky option for owners since the Patriots will be playing on Sunday Night Football, but he should be in fantasy lineups if he is active for the game. Owners may want a backup plan ready in case he sits out.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski not 100 percent

Thu, 08 Sep 2016 06:14:24 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) enters the season less than 100 percent with a hamstring injury that has limited him since Aug. 15.

Fantasy Tip: Gronk remains the cream of the crop in traditional leagues, but he might not make a great play in DFS for Week 1. Martellus Bennett might actually be a better play at a much lower rate.

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) was limited during practice Wednesday, Sept. 7.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski back at practice

Wed, 24 Aug 2016 12:32:28 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (undisclosed) is participating in practice Wednesday, Aug. 24.

Fantasy Tip: Gronkowski probably will sit out the third preseason game but appears to be on track for the start of the regular season. He should be the top tight end selected in all fantasy leagues as long as he is healthy.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski still out

Mon, 22 Aug 2016 15:56:40 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (undisclosed) has not practiced since Monday, Aug. 15, although he does not appear to be dealing with a serious ailment.

Fantasy Tip: The Patriots are mysterious when it comes to their players' injuries and injury designations. They'll take it easy with their star tight end leading up to the season. Since it's nothing serious, Gronk can still be drafted as the first tight end in all formats.

Patriots | Plenty of action for Martellus Bennett?

Thu, 18 Aug 2016 14:45:08 -0700

New England Patriots TEs Martellus Bennett and Rob Gronkowski could be on the field together for up to 80% of the Patriots' plays, in the opinion of ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss. Head coach Bill Belichick views the tight ends as interchangeable and believes they can cause problems for opposing defenses when they're on the field at the same time.

Fantasy Tip: New England hasn't been shy about two-tight end sets in previous years. The Gronk-Bennett duo would be dynamic in the red zone, too, at least on paper. They could also be used together more frequently in the first four games of the season to give Jimmy Garoppolo more high-percentage targets. Gronk is the No. 1 fantasy tight end when healthy, even with Bennett "interfering," but Bennett deserves more credit behind Gronk and is draftable as a midrange TE2.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski out again

Wed, 17 Aug 2016 08:49:49 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (undisclosed) is out of practice Wednesday, Aug. 17.

Fantasy Tip: Gronk remains one of the best tight ends in fantasy, but the rest of the pack is starting to catch up to his production. He figures to be used heavily the first four weeks without Tom Brady, but injuries are always a concern.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski held out of practice

Tue, 16 Aug 2016 23:40:44 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (undisclosed) was held out of practice on Tuesday, Aug. 16, after an injury scare the previous day. It's unknown if he'll return for the third day of joint practices with the Chicago Bears on Wednesday, Aug. 17.

Fantasy Tip: It's Gronk and then everyone else at the TE position, so the fact that he avoided serious injury is music to fantasy owners' ears. Expect the team to adopt a cautious approach with Gronkowski in getting him back on the field.

Patriots | Gronk's injury considered minor

Mon, 15 Aug 2016 21:47:52 -0700

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski's (undisclosed) injury at practice Monday, Aug. 15, is considered minor.

Fantasy Tip: It's great news for Gronkowski and his fantasy owners in early draft leagues. Martellus Bennett would be the beneficiary of more reps if Gronk suffers some sort of setback.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski leaves practice

Mon, 15 Aug 2016 12:24:29 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (undisclosed) left practice early Monday, Aug. 15, after pulling up while trying to catch a pass in 7-on-7 drills.

Fantasy Tip: The extent of Gronkowski's situation isn't known at this point, but he's no stranger to the injury bug. His status will obviously need to be monitored over the coming days, but Martellus Bennett would immediately gain extra value if Gronk is forced to miss time.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski dropping the ball

Thu, 11 Aug 2016 08:04:14 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski leads the team with seven drops through the first 12 practices in training camp.

Fantasy Tip: It's early, and this seems like a moot stat unless these drops start trickling into preseason games. Gronk is arguably the best tight end in fantasy, but the position is as healthy as it has been in several years with talent. The gap is closing between him and the field.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski had a pectoral injury

Tue, 02 Aug 2016 08:03:18 -0700

Updating previous reports, New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (pectoral) had a pectoral injury this offseason.

Fantasy Tip: Gronk missed some OTA time with the mysterious injury. His fantasy stock is unchanged, and he's arguably the top tight end in fantasy. The loss of Tom Brady for four games could actually benefit him as inexperienced quarterbacks generally check down to tight ends often.

Patriots | New deal in works for Rob Gronkowski

Sun, 31 Jul 2016 10:48:54 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski's agents are working with the Patriots on a new deal, although nothing is imminent.

Fantasy Tip: Gronk is the most dominant tight end in the NFL when he's healthy. Tom Brady may be missing the first four games of the season, but Gronk will give Jimmy Garoppolo a big safety blanket. The star tight end should be taken as a late first-round pick or early second-round pick.

Mon, 13 Jun 2016 08:13:56 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (undisclosed) is on the field for the organized team activities Monday, June 13.

Fantasy Tip: The team has been cautious with Gronk this offseason due to an undisclosed ailment. It's not something that should affect the top tight end target in fantasy.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski should be ready for camp

Sat, 11 Jun 2016 10:17:16 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (undisclosed) said he will be ready for training camp despite missing minicamp last week. Gronkowski said he and the coaching staff are on the same page and everything is going smoothly.

Fantasy Tip: Gronk's injury and status are vague, but it doesn't seem to be a serious situation. He should still be the top tight end selected in fantasy drafts, either late in the first round or early in the second round.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski out with cryptic ailment

Wed, 08 Jun 2016 10:07:17 -0700

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (undisclosed) reported with the rest of his teammates Tuesday, June 7, and is continuing to work behind the scenes as the club takes a cautious approach with an undisclosed physical ailment that isn't considered a long-range concern, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: It could be a case of the team just limiting his reps early on after a slew of injuries in recent years. Gronk is likely to be the first tight end off the board in most formats if he's healthy.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski not at practice

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 11:28:02 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (undisclosed) did not participate in practice Tuesday, June 7. It is not known if his absence has anything to do with his contract status or a possible injury. He currently ranks 16th among tight ends in base salary.

Fantasy Tip: Gronkowski may be upset with his contract situation but likely will report for training camp if he does not participate during the current minicamp. He is the best fantasy tight end in the league and should be selected in one of the first two rounds in most leagues.

Patriots | Martellus Bennett, Tom Brady connecting

Thu, 26 May 2016 15:44:03 -0700

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady and TE Martellus Bennett connected several times in the red zone, including some touchdowns, during organized team activities Thursday, May 26. Bennett was New England's primary tight end in practice with TE Rob Gronkowski (undisclosed) not practicing.

Fantasy Tip: As long as Gronk is healthy, Bennett will play second fiddle. Bennett could prove to be a viable red-zone threat, though, and is still worth drafting as a TE2 in his new confines.

Patriots | Key Patriots absent Thursday

Thu, 26 May 2016 15:17:29 -0700

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman (foot), RB LeGarrette Blount (knee), RB Dion Lewis (knee), WR Danny Amendola (ankle, knee) and TE Rob Gronkowski (undisclosed) did not participate in organized team activities Thursday, May 26.

Fantasy Tip: The Patriots are infamous for their vague injury reports and resting of players. Obviously they're going to take caution with the players listed above, though. As long as none of these guys suffer any setbacks this offseason, they should be good to go for the start of the regular season. Edelman and Gronk should both be viewed as fantasy starters at their respective positions, with more value in PPR formats. Lewis is an RB2 candidate in PPR formats if he can stay healthy, while Blount has RB3 potential if he, too, can keep his health. Amendola is the biggest injury risk; he shouldn't be viewed as more than a low-end WR4 to high-end WR5.

Patriots | Gronk not concerned about his contract

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 10:26:51 -0700

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski said he's not concerned about his contract. "No, that's not on my mind at all. I started offseason workouts yesterday. It just feels great to be back with the team working out, getting back in football shape and getting prepared for the season."

Fantasy Tip: Gronk is signed through 2019 at pretty reduced rates in comparison to his talent level. He's the top tight end in fantasy, bar none. There doesn't seem to be much concern for a holdout right now.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski's option to be picked up

Mon, 07 Mar 2016 05:57:28 -0800

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski will have the remainder of his $10 million option exercised before March 9. The team picked up $4 million of the $10 million in the option in August, and he's under control through the 2019 season.

Fantasy Tip: I don't think we're going out on a limb by saying Gronk is the top tight end in fantasy.

Patriots | No surgery for Rob Gronkowski

Thu, 04 Feb 2016 13:07:07 -0800

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (knee, back) did not require surgery on his knee or back, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: The injuries didn't seem to impact Gronk too badly, at least in the playoffs. He should be fine for offseason activities since there's no surgery to recover from. Assuming he doesn't suffer any setbacks or new ailments over the next few months, he'll be the top fantasy tight end to target next season.

Panthers | Greg Olsen excels on deep passes

Thu, 04 Feb 2016 10:25:55 -0800

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen has 22 receptions on passes thrown between 15 and 30 yards downfield in 2015 (including playoffs), the most since New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski and former New Orleans Saints TE Jimmy Graham each had 21 in 2011.

Fantasy Tip: Gronkowski was 3-for-3 on such throws in the AFC Championship Game against the Denver Broncos, so Olsen could be primed for a huge day in Super Bowl 50, especially since the Broncos' safeties (T.J. Ward and Darian Stewart) are both battling lower-body injuries. Olsen could easily be the most productive skill-position player on either side on Super Sunday.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski big in loss

Sun, 24 Jan 2016 16:06:46 -0800

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski finished with eight catches for a game-high 144 yards and a touchdown in a 20-18 loss to the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game Sunday, Jan. 24.

Fantasy Tip: Gronkowski's big game wasn't enough to propel the Patriots to the Super Bowl, but he once again showed why he is the unquestioned top fantasy tight end in any format. His status won't change in 2016.

Patriots | Three key Patriots active Sunday

Sun, 24 Jan 2016 10:48:37 -0800

New England Patriots WRs Julian Edelman (foot) and Danny Amendola (knee) and TE Rob Gronkowski (knee, back) are all officially active for the AFC Championship against the Denver Broncos Sunday, Jan. 24.

Fantasy Tip: There was really no doubt that these three would play despite their questionable tags. New England's passing game could be utilized early and often against the Broncos; Edelman ($8,100, 16.2% of cap) and Gronk ($8,000, 16.0%) have more upside, but Amendola ($6,100, 12.2%) is also worth a look if you're rostering a FantasyScore playoff team.

Fri, 22 Jan 2016 12:51:57 -0800

New England Patriots WRs Danny Amendola (knee) and Julian Edelman (foot) and TE Rob Gronkowski (knee, back) were limited in practice all week and are questionable to face the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Sunday, Jan. 24.

Fantasy Tip: All three players will suit up this weekend and could all have a big impact in the passing game. Amendola ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) might be overlooked by most and could thrive with Denver paying more attention to Edelman ($8,100, 16.2% of cap) and Gronkowski ($8,000, 16.0% of cap). It's hard not to like both Edelman and Gronk when they're healthy.
