Milwaukee Brewers C Jonathan Lucroy is expected to be used at first base when the team faces left-handed pitchers. C Martin Maldonado would be behind the plate, and 1B Adam Lind would sit the bench. Lucroy will work out at first base during spring training in order to become familiar with the position. Lucroy has played 211 1/3 innings at first base in his career, and he's made 25 starts there in the last two years.

Milwaukee Brewers C Martin Maldonado was suspended five games Tuesday, April 22, for his role in the team's bench-clearing brawl with the Pittsburgh Pirates Sunday, April 20.
Fantasy Tip: Maldonado was also fined $2,500 for his actions, which included punching Travis Snider square in the face during the fracas. This won't impact fantasy baseball teams, however, unless you own Maldonado in the deepest of NL-only leagues.

Milwaukee Brewers INF-OF Elian Herrera was supposed to be a paternity list fill-in for 1B Lyle Overbay, but then OF Logan Schafer (hamstring) hit the 15-day disabled list. Now, OF Carlos Gomez and C Martin Maldonado face potential suspensions, meaning Herrera stands to see time as the team's starting center fielder and emergency catcher. "If suspensions come down, the catching part is going to be big. Center (field) is big, too. We don't have anybody else who can play center. (OF Ryan Braun) is really our backup center fielder if we don't have Gomez or Herrera here," manager Ron Roenicke said.

Milwaukee Brewers backup C Martin Maldonado dropped 25 pounds this offseason. "I was eating more healthy," said Maldonado, 27. "My wife (Janelise) helped with that. That was one of my goals, to get here in better shape. It was hard in the beginning. After that, it was easier. I feel a lot better."

Milwaukee Brewers SP Wily Peralta is very comfortable pitching to C Martin Maldonado from their time together in the minors and because of their ability to speak in Spanish. Maldonado got the starting nod behind the plate over C Jonathan Lucroy Sunday, July 21, with Peralta on the bump. Peralta allowed two hits over eight innings against the Miami Marlins for his fourth straight excellent outing. "He has (top-of-rotation) ability," manager Ron Roenicke said. "The difference is going to be the mental side of it. Is he able to really run his own ballgame? Is he able to bounce back when he has a bad inning? The good ones, they all do it."
Peralta's recent success has been attributed to better control and the fact that he's also been able to control his emotions while pitching. He recorded most of his seven strikeouts Sunday on his slider, and he kept his 96 mph heater down in the zone. Roenicke doesn't expect Maldonado to be Peralta's personal catcher forever, however, but it appears the club will use that arrangement for the time being.

Milwaukee Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said he is not sure who he would consider to be the team's third catcher. Both of the catchers on the 40-man roster (Jonathan Lucroy and Martin Maldonado) will miss a portion of spring training camp because of the World Baseball Classic. The Brewers' other catchers in major league camp (Dayton Buller, Anderson De La Rosa, Blake Lalli, Rafael Neda and Adam Weisenburger) are all non-roster invitees, with Lalli being the only one with prior MLB experience.
