Cleveland Browns RBs Ben Tate and Terrance West will compete for the starting tailback job during training camp and the preseason, and it's a battle head coach Mike Pettine is looking forward to. "And the best competition might be Ben Tate and our guy (Terrance West) from Towson, who I really like," Pettine said Tuesday, July 22.
Fantasy Tip: The player to emerge as the starter will be a decent RB2 or flex fantasy play, while the loser of the battle will be best used as an RB3/4 in most formats.

Cleveland Browns SS Donte Whitner said the team's offense will be based on running the football heavily. "I'm going to stand back and let this competition develop and may the best man win, but our offense is gonna be predicated on running the football and being physical in the run game also," Whitner told SiriusXM NFL Radio. "You can't just ask both quarterbacks to stand back there and throw the ball 35, 40 times a game."
Fantasy Tip: New offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan's zone-blocking scheme should fit well with Ben Tate's abilities. Tate, who is expected to be the workhorse back for the team, won't come cheaply in drafts this year as a result.

Cleveland Browns RBs Ben Tate, Terrance West and Dion Lewis will be amongst a running back committee, according to head coach Mike Pettine. "I think in the AFC North, you have to be running back by committee," Pettine said. "You'd like to have a guy that can carry most of the load, but also be able to alternate guys... you've got to be able to get fresh legs out there."
Fantasy Tip: Tate should see the lion's share of the workload, but West has vaulted himself into RB3 or RB4 material. He could be leaned on heavily as the season wears on. Lewis doesn't figure into the fantasy equation much unless there's an injury.

Cleveland Browns RB Ben Tate is not worried about a possible batting for playing time with RB Terrance West. "Truthfully, I don't look at it like that," Tate said. "You guys may see it like that, but there's nobody in that room that scares me. I'm just honest." Tate expects to have a breakout year in the team's zone-blocking scheme under offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan.
Fantasy Tip: Tate will be a popular fantasy football commodity this year and perhaps may be a bit overvalued. The news about Terrance West taking first-team snaps is probably a bit overblown since Tate is sitting out because he's nicked up. If Tate is healthy, nobody should compete with him for the majority of touches. Staying healthy, however, may be Tate's biggest challenge in 2014.

Cleveland Browns RB Terrance West said he expects to compete with RB Ben Tate for the starting running back job during training camp. "That's what I'm here to do," West said. "I want to play. I want to be the starter, and I'm going to practice like a starter."

Cleveland Browns RB Ben Tate (undisclosed) is nicked up at minicamp this week but took repetitions when he was able to, according to head coach Mike Pettine.
Fantasy Tip: Tate's ability to stay healthy as the main back will surely be tested this year as Cleveland's clear-cut No. 1 rusher. This probably isn't a huge deal so early in the offseason unless it leads to missed practices.

Cleveland Browns RB Terrance West has been getting reps with the first-team offense in practice, and he has shown power through the first level and quickness when eluding defenders. He is expected to play a major role for the team offensively. RB Chris Ogbonnaya has also taken reps with the first team while the team takes it slow with RB Ben Tate.
Fantasy Tip: Despite the fact that Tate landed in one of the best spots for his game, his sketchy history when given the chance at lead-back duties, as well as some bouts with injury, make West a clear choice as an RB4 with weekly flex potential at minimum. Tate is a risky RB2.

The Cleveland Browns have signed free-agent RB Ben Tate (Texans) to a two-year deal worth $7 million.
Fantasy Tip: Tate represents a huge upgrade over what the Browns used at running back last season. He's coming off a year where he rushed for 771 yards and four touchdowns in 14 games. However, his biggest problem has been remaining healthy - he ended the 2013 campaign on injured reserve after battling cracked ribs for much of the season.
