Vikings | Ben Tate will play

Sun, 23 Nov 2014 06:45:21 -0800

Minnesota Vikings RB Ben Tate will be active Sunday, Nov. 23, and have a role in Week 12. RB Matt Asiata will be inactive.

Fantasy Tip: Tate ($4,900; 9.8% of your cap) probably won't have enough of a role this week to be a factor on FantasyScore. It's pretty hard to sign with a team and have a big role at running back the same week.

Vikings | Jerick McKinnon still the lead back

Thu, 20 Nov 2014 10:52:53 -0800

Minnesota Vikings RB Jerick McKinnon (back) will retain the lead-back role, even after the team claimed RB Ben Tate off waivers from the Cleveland Browns Wednesday, Nov. 19, according to offensive coordinator Norv Turner. Turner said Tate was brought in for insurance because both McKinnon and RB Matt Asiata (concussion) were dealing with injuries this week. McKinnon said he will be ready for Week 12 against the Green Bay Packers. However, Asiata's status is in doubt. "We're excited about Jerick and what he's done and I see him as our running back," Turner said. "He's been limited in practice last week and couldn't practice (Wednesday) So you got to protect yourself, obviously with Matt not being able to practice (Wednesday) and in doubt as to whether he'll play or not."

Fantasy Tip: The real loser of the Tate signing has to be Asiata. McKinnon ($5,400) should play against the Packers, but how much will the Vikes run if they fall behind big early? Tate ($4,900) looks to be part of another committee, but he'll have better chance for fantasy success in his new digs. Consider him a flex option at FantasyScore.

Vikings | Ben Tate gives Vikes depth

Wed, 19 Nov 2014 14:07:02 -0800

Minnesota Vikings RB Ben Tate gives the team much-needed depth at the running back position, with RBs Jerick McKinnon (back) and Matt Asiata (concussion) both missing practice Wednesday, Nov. 19. McKinnon leads the team with 484 yards and a 4.9 yards per carry average, while Asiata has six rushing touchdowns and a one receiving TD, but he has just 3.3 yards per carry.

Fantasy Tip: Tate ($4,900) could become part of another three-headed monster in Minnesota, but one would think he'd have a better shot at fantasy success this time around, especially with McKinnon ($5,400) and Asiata ($4,100) injured this week. Tate could wind up starting this weekend against the Green Bay Packers, but this backfield could be a crapshoot at FantasyScore, especially if the Packers get out to an early lead.

Vikings | Vikings claim Ben Tate

Wed, 19 Nov 2014 13:11:57 -0800

Free-agent RB Ben Tate (Browns) was claimed off waivers by the Minnesota Vikings Wednesday, Nov. 19.

Fantasy Tip: It's unclear what Tate's role will be in Minnesota, and he isn't likely to make a significant contribution immediately in Week 12 against the Green Bay Packers. Jerick McKinnon and Matt Asiata had been doing most of the backfield work in the absence of Adrian Peterson. Stay tuned.

Dolphins | Miami unlikely to claim Ben Tate

Wed, 19 Nov 2014 09:15:54 -0800

Free-agent RB Ben Tate (Browns) likely will not be claimed by the Miami Dolphins, but the team is not ruling out the possibility of signing him later in the season or in the offseason, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Lamar Miller in the team's starting running back but is only receiving around 13 carries a game. Tate likely would receive some carries if he joined the Dolphins but would be the No. 2 running back. Miller costs $6,100 on FantasyScore and probably should be the only Dolphins running backs owners should consider.

Colts | Researching Ben Tate

Tue, 18 Nov 2014 20:10:24 -0800

The Indianapolis Colts have started researching free-agent RB Ben Tate (Browns), including his character and potential fit in the team's scheme, and appear interested in possibly claiming him off waivers from the Cleveland Browns, a source said Tuesday, Nov. 18.

Broncos | Denver not expected to sign RB

Tue, 18 Nov 2014 14:52:41 -0800

Free-agent RBs Ben Tate (Browns) and LeGarrette Blount (Steelers) aren't expected to draw interest from the Denver Broncos. It is late into the season and is tough for a new running back to learn a Peyton Manning-led system.

Fantasy Tip: It looks like the Broncos will stick with C.J. Anderson and Juwan Thompson until Montee Ball and Ronnie Hillman return. Both face a tough test in the form of the Miami Dolphins this week, who have allowed just four rushing touchdowns to running backs this year.

Steelers | Steelers interested in Ben Tate?

Tue, 18 Nov 2014 11:32:40 -0800

Free-agent RB Ben Tate (Browns) may already have drawn interest from the Pittsburgh Steelers after being released by the Cleveland Browns Tuesday, Nov. 18. A Steelers staff member reportedly called a Cleveland Browns staff member asking about Tate's release.

Fantasy Tip: This move would make sense considering the Steelers just released LeGarrette Blount. Tate would obviously still play second fiddle behind Le'Veon Bell if this were to develop into anything finite. Tate could still hold some fantasy value if he is used on passing downs or in goal line situations. If you can afford it, try holding on to Tate until we know his next destination.

Browns | Ben Tate waived

Tue, 18 Nov 2014 08:19:06 -0800

The Cleveland Browns have waived RB Ben Tate.

Fantasy Tip: Well. The Browns have struggled to find a consistent running back rotation in recent weeks, and Tate reportedly has complained about playing time. This immediately elevates the fantasy value of Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West. Count on Crowell, their goal line preference, being the better option most weeks. As for Tate, he'll probably land with a club soon, but his value depends on the situation.

Browns | RB carousel will continue in CLE

Mon, 17 Nov 2014 07:56:25 -0800

Cleveland Browns RBs Ben Tate, Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West will continue to be mixed and matched on a weekly basis, according to head coach Mike Pettine. Crowell had a critical lost fumble Sunday, Nov. 16, but the team kept going to him despite the miscue. "It's something we'll look at week to week," Pettine said. "We're not just going to pick one. When you go in a game-plan situation you look at what gives us the best chance to win."

Fantasy Tip: This is a muddy situation, and it appears the team could feature any of the backs against a team they feel that back can exploit. Tate appears to be falling out of favor with just two carries in Week 11. Crowell has the advantage for now and serves as a cheap flex option on FantasyScore.

Browns | Ben Tate disappointed with role

Tue, 11 Nov 2014 10:47:24 -0800

Cleveland Browns RB Ben Tate said he's frustrated with his role in the offense, and he thinks he's been running well.

Fantasy Tip: Tate ($4,900) has 10 carries in each of the last two games, so he's not completely being ignored in this backfield mess, but he's clearly not the main guy. That designation falls to Terrance West, and that doesn't look to be changing, at least not in Week 11 against the Houston Texans. Tate is a flex option, at best, right now at FantasyScore.

Browns | Terrance West earns more touches

Sun, 02 Nov 2014 20:36:56 -0800

Cleveland Browns RB Terrance West carried a team-high 15 times for 48 yards in the Week 9 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, surging ahead of RB Ben Tate who was held to just three yards on 10 carries. RB Isaiah Crowell did not receive an offensive snap. "When you looked at the tape and really compared the three, we feel (West's) really coming on," head coach Mike Pettine said Sunday, Nov. 2. "He's earned those touches, and when he gets out there he does make the most of them."

Fantasy Tip: West made two big plays on the opening drive of the second half, and he was credited with a big block on the game-winning touchdown. He might not have lit it up for fantasy owners, but he impressed the coaching staff and appears to be at or near the top of the depth chart heading into Week 10 against the Cincinnati Bengals. He is worth a look in FantasyScore if the price is right.

Browns | Isaiah Crowell wants to be more involved

Fri, 31 Oct 2014 14:11:41 -0700

Cleveland Browns RB Isaiah Crowell, who played just three snaps and had one carry for one yard in Week 8, is hoping he'll be more involved in the game plan in Week 9 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. RB Ben Tate played 31 of 56 snaps and had 15 carries for 26 yards last week, while RB Terrance West played 22 snaps and had seven carries for 11 yards. Crowell continues to lead the team in average yards per carry (4.9) and rushing touchdowns (four). He dropped two pitches and had a fumble in Week 6, but Crowell insists that he doesn't have ball-security issues.

Fantasy Tip: Crowell ($3,900; 6.8% of cap) has another great matchup against the Bucs this week, but he also had a great matchup last week, and didn't see any time. Crowell's value rests heavily on whether he can score, so he continues to be a dice roll, especially in this busy backfield.

Browns | CLE re-evaluating RB rotation

Tue, 21 Oct 2014 06:36:58 -0700

Cleveland Browns RBs Ben Tate, Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West were held to 69 yards on 33 carries in Week 7, and head coach Mike Pettine suggested a change was coming for the trio. "We'll have a discussion this week as to how to best rotate those guys," Pettine said.

Fantasy Tip: We could see the work limited to just Tate and Crowell, maybe at a 60-40 split at best, at least for Crowell. Tate ($5,900; 11.8% of your cap) is a mid-rate RB2 against the Oakland Raiders on FantasyScore this week. Crowell ($4,000; 8%) is worth consideration at flex, but there are better options unless he's going to have a larger role. West was benched last week and may not even dress.

Browns | Ben Tate practices in full

Wed, 15 Oct 2014 15:45:05 -0700

Cleveland Browns RB Ben Tate (finger) practiced in full Wednesday, Oct. 15.

Fantasy Tip: Tate had 22 carries in his return to action a week ago and he followed that up with 25 carries for 78 yards and two touchdowns this past Sunday. It's safe to say he's back to full health. He should be a fine investment at $5,900 at FantasyScore against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 7.

Browns | Terrance West inactive

Sun, 12 Oct 2014 09:15:15 -0700

Cleveland Browns RB Terrance West is a healthy scratch Sunday, Oct. 12.

Fantasy Tip: Isaiah Crowell ($3,700; 7.4% of your cap) and Glenn Winston ($3,000; 6%) are expected to give Ben Tate ($5,500; 11%) spot relief. Tate proved last week that he's a legitimate RB2 option on FantasyScore and is at a solid price this week.

Browns | No restrictions for Ben Tate

Wed, 08 Oct 2014 15:27:17 -0700

Cleveland Browns RB Ben Tate (finger) practiced in full Wednesday, Oct. 8.

Fantasy Tip: Tate had a season-high 22 carries for 124 yards in Week 5, showing that he's back to full health. It also justified that assumption that Tate would return as the starter when healthy. Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell will continue to be involved, but their values take a hit with Tate healthy. Tate will cost you $5,500 (11.0% of cap) at FantasyScore.

Browns | Ben Tate to start

Sun, 05 Oct 2014 09:35:21 -0700

Cleveland Browns RB Ben Tate (knee) will start the Week 5 game Sunday, Oct. 5.

Fantasy Tip: Tate will take up just 9.2% of the cap ($4,600) at FantasyScore in Week 5, and he could make a solid bargain option against a Tennessee defense that ranks 22nd against the run.

Browns | Ben Tate expected to start

Thu, 02 Oct 2014 11:46:49 -0700

Cleveland Browns RB Ben Tate (knee) is expected to start in Week 5 if he is able to play because Tate's experience allows the team to expand their playbook. RB Terrance West has been in front of RB Isaiah Crowell on the depth chart, but head coach Mike Pettine said Crowell may deserve more playing time. "It's not an easy problem because if you spread it too thin over three then you run the risk of none of them really getting into the groove of the game," Pettine said. "If you restrict it to just two, now you're looking at potentially having a guy that's fresh on the sideline that's not doing anything. It is an issue and you kind of have to play it by ear."

Fantasy Tip: It is not known how the team will distribute the playing time if Tate, West and Crowell all dress for Week 5. Tate may get the most work since he is starting, but West and Crowell have played well in his absence. Crowell may be the best value among the three at a price of $3,700 on FantasyScore, because he could receive more playing time. West at $5,300 and Tate at $4,600 are risky options since their playing time is uncertain at this time.

Cleveland Browns RB Ben Tate (knee) is on track to play in Week 5, according to head coach Mike Pettine.

Fantasy Tip: Tate could get his starting job back, but will have to share time with Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell. Tate costs $4,600 on FantasyScore this week, but owners may want to avoid using him since he may not get a majority of the work.

Browns | Ben Tate to be limited

Wed, 01 Oct 2014 09:47:02 -0700

Cleveland Browns RB Ben Tate (knee) will be limited during practice Wednesday, Oct. 1.

Fantasy Tip: Tate may be able to return to the lineup this week but will have to share snaps with Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell. Tate has a price of $4,600 on FantasyScore this week, but owners may want to consider using a running back that is not part of a committee.

Browns | Ben Tate returns to practice

Tue, 30 Sep 2014 10:11:43 -0700

Cleveland Browns RB Ben Tate (knee) returned to practice Tuesday, Sept. 30, for the first time since spraining his right knee in the season opener Sept. 7. It means that Tate is likely to return to action in Week 5 against the Tennessee Titans. He's expected to return to the starting lineup, too, despite the solid play of RBs Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell in his absence. "That's what we brought Tate here for, to be the starter," running backs coach Wilbert Montgomery said last week. "He's the No. 1 running back in this offense. Right now, you can say we miss him. We miss his experience. We miss his leadership with the group. Speaking from that standpoint, we'll be open arms and welcome to have Ben back into the fold." Tate was wearing a brace on his knee while doing individual drills Tuesday.

Fantasy Tip: Tate will likely start against the Titans, but there'll still probably be a rotation in the backfield to keep him fresh in his first start back, and Crowell could continue to see goal-line looks. At FantasyScore, Tate will cost you only $4,600 (9.2% of cap), but there are probably better options available.

Browns | Ben Tate could start upon return

Wed, 24 Sep 2014 19:35:44 -0700

Updating a previous report, Cleveland Browns RB Ben Tate (knee) is expected to return to a starting role when he is healthy enough to play, according to running backs coach Wilbert Montgomery. However, RB Isaiah Crowell seems destined for a bigger role. "That's what we brought Tate here for, to be the starter," Montgomery said. "He's the No. 1 running back in this offense. Right now, you can say we miss him. We miss his experience. We miss his leadership with the group. Speaking from that standpoint, we'll be open arms and welcome to have Ben back into the fold."

Fantasy Tip: Tate has been productive in the past in Houston, but he has had a hard time staying healthy during his career. Rookies Terrance West and Crowell have stepped up in Tate's absence, and his fantasy appeal has definitely decreased as a result of the play of the two rookies. The entire backfield picture is a bit muddled right now, and Crowell actually looks to have the most upside at this juncture.

Browns | Ben Tate may not start upon return

Mon, 22 Sep 2014 14:20:59 -0700

Cleveland Browns RB Ben Tate may not regain his starting job when he returns from his injury because RBs Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell have performed well, according to head coach Mike Pettine. Pettine said the team is eager to have Tate back on the field.

Fantasy Tip: Tate has missed the last two games because of a knee injury but may be ready to play after the Week 4 bye. Owners will need to see how the touches will be handed out before being confident in using any of the Browns running backs, but Tate's value likely will go down if he shares work with the other running backs.

Browns | No update on Ben Tate

Tue, 09 Sep 2014 11:01:24 -0700

Cleveland Browns RB Ben Tate (knee) has no injury update on his status for Week 2, according to head coach Mike Pettine.

Fantasy Tip: We won't have a better idea if Tate can suit up for Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints until later this week. To be safe, avoid him and his FantasyScore price of $5,100 (10.2% of cap). Terrance West ($4,800; 9.6%), who is Tate's backup, may be a decent option if Tate can't play. The Saints gave up over 100 yards on the ground in Week 1. Also, don't forget about Isaiah Crowell ($4,000; 8.0%).

RBs Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell replaced Tate, with West rushing for 100 yards and Crowell scoring a pair of touchdowns.

Mon, 01 Sep 2014 07:46:36 -0700

Cleveland Browns RB Ben Tate is expected to stay on the field on third downs, according to head coach Mike Pettine.

Fantasy Tip: This is good news for his PPR value. Tate is a solid RB2, but Brian Hoyer will have to be an effective passer to keep eight defenders out of the box. Terrance West's value takes a hit as an RB4, at least early on. He remains a solid long-term piece.

Browns | Ben Tate, Terrance West might be great battle

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 22:02:45 -0700

Cleveland Browns RBs Ben Tate and Terrance West will compete for the starting tailback job during training camp and the preseason, and it's a battle head coach Mike Pettine is looking forward to. "And the best competition might be Ben Tate and our guy (Terrance West) from Towson, who I really like," Pettine said Tuesday, July 22.

Fantasy Tip: The player to emerge as the starter will be a decent RB2 or flex fantasy play, while the loser of the battle will be best used as an RB3/4 in most formats.

Browns | Offense to focus on ground game

Fri, 11 Jul 2014 15:28:18 -0700

Cleveland Browns SS Donte Whitner said the team's offense will be based on running the football heavily. "I'm going to stand back and let this competition develop and may the best man win, but our offense is gonna be predicated on running the football and being physical in the run game also," Whitner told SiriusXM NFL Radio. "You can't just ask both quarterbacks to stand back there and throw the ball 35, 40 times a game."

Fantasy Tip: New offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan's zone-blocking scheme should fit well with Ben Tate's abilities. Tate, who is expected to be the workhorse back for the team, won't come cheaply in drafts this year as a result.

Browns | To use committee at running back

Sat, 28 Jun 2014 14:35:37 -0700

Cleveland Browns RBs Ben Tate, Terrance West and Dion Lewis will be amongst a running back committee, according to head coach Mike Pettine. "I think in the AFC North, you have to be running back by committee," Pettine said. "You'd like to have a guy that can carry most of the load, but also be able to alternate guys... you've got to be able to get fresh legs out there."

Fantasy Tip: Tate should see the lion's share of the workload, but West has vaulted himself into RB3 or RB4 material. He could be leaned on heavily as the season wears on. Lewis doesn't figure into the fantasy equation much unless there's an injury.

Browns | Ben Tate not worried about competition

Fri, 13 Jun 2014 11:28:39 -0700

Cleveland Browns RB Ben Tate is not worried about a possible batting for playing time with RB Terrance West. "Truthfully, I don't look at it like that," Tate said. "You guys may see it like that, but there's nobody in that room that scares me. I'm just honest." Tate expects to have a breakout year in the team's zone-blocking scheme under offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan.

Fantasy Tip: Tate will be a popular fantasy football commodity this year and perhaps may be a bit overvalued. The news about Terrance West taking first-team snaps is probably a bit overblown since Tate is sitting out because he's nicked up. If Tate is healthy, nobody should compete with him for the majority of touches. Staying healthy, however, may be Tate's biggest challenge in 2014.
