Mariners | James Paxton keeps rolling

Sun, 17 May 2015 18:54:05 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton allowed five hits over eight shutout innings in a 5-0 win over the Boston Red Sox Sunday, May 17, running his scoreless innings streak to a career-best 20.

Fantasy Tip: Paxton ($4,200, 8.4% of cap) has allowed two earned runs or less in five straight starts, lowering his ERA to 3.59 after some rough outings to start the year. He has been a bargain at FantasyScore lately.

Mariners | James Paxton having mechanical issues?

Mon, 20 Apr 2015 16:53:05 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton suggested his mechanics were off and that he was "too rotational" after struggling in his second straight start Sunday, April 19. He allowed seven runs and nine hits in just 2 2/3 innings against the Texas Rangers. However, manager Lloyd McClendon refused to blame poor mechanics on Paxton's outing.

Fantasy Tip: Paxton ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA and 1.47 WHIP and 12 strikeouts in 15 innings in his two 2015 starts. You'll want to avoid him at FantasyScore until he gets things turned around.

Mariners | James Paxton confident about start

Mon, 06 Apr 2015 22:17:05 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton (forearm) missed a couple of starts during the spring after falling during an agility drill. However, he said Monday, April 6, that despite the fewer innings he feels ready for the season.

Fantasy Tip: Paxton takes the ball Tuesday against the Angels, and at $5,100 (or 10.2% of cap) he is a sharp play in FantasyScore. The Angels finished last season 3-8 in their final 11 road games against a left-handed starter, and they're 1-5 in their past six trips to Safeco Field.

Mariners | James Paxton to pitch Sunday

Wed, 18 Mar 2015 11:08:09 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton (forearm) will make his Cactus League debut Sunday, March 22, against the Texas Rangers after reporting no problems following his three-inning simulated game Tuesday, March 17. He's been slowed by a sore forearm this spring, but he said he'll be ready to go for the regular season.

Fantasy Tip: Paxton is an up-and-coming starter in the M's rotation, and most drafters probably won't be on his scent, especially because of his injury this spring. He's a very cheap end-game target in deep mixed leagues.

Tue, 17 Mar 2015 12:01:47 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton (forearm) made his spring debut with three innings in a simulated game, and he said afterward he vowed to be ready for Opening Day.

Mariners | James Paxton feels no pain

Wed, 11 Mar 2015 11:43:21 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton (forearm) had "a great live BP," according to pitching coach Rick Waits, Wednesday, March 11. Waits said Paxton will be ready for his spring debut March 17 after one more batting practice session. Paxton isn't feeling any pain in his forearm.

Fantasy Tip: Paxton should have plenty of time to be ready for the start of the regular season. With a secured spot in the starting rotation in 2015, Paxton is a fantasy baseball commodity with plenty of upside worth a late-round pick in deep mixed leagues.

Mariners | James Paxton working on new changeup

Wed, 11 Mar 2015 11:19:55 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton is working on a new two-seam changeup this spring in order to generate more movement on the pitch. He also continues to use his four-seam changeup grip.

Fantasy Tip: Paxton is dealing with a minor forearm injury this spring, and he's expected to be able to start the year in the rotation. He's an intriguing young fantasy commodity that should be on your radar as a late-round flier in deep mixed leagues. Another wrinkle to his offspeed pitch could another reason to like his upside in 2015.

Mariners | James Paxton progressing

Mon, 09 Mar 2015 13:22:17 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton (forearm) threw a 40-pitch bullpen session Monday, March 9, and used all of his offspeed pitches. Paxton said that "everything feels great." He'll do a live batting practice session before making his spring debut Tuesday, March 17.

Fantasy Tip: The 26-year-old Paxton is a bright young prospect that went 6-4 with a 3.04 ERA for the M's in 2014 in 13 starts (74 innings). If he doesn't suffer anymore setbacks, he should be good to go for the start of the regular season. With a guaranteed rotation spot, Paxton is definitely worth a look late in mixed league drafts.

Mariners | James Paxton tests forearm

Mon, 02 Mar 2015 13:49:44 -0800

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton (forearm) played catch Monday, March 2, and is targeting his first spring bullpen session for Friday, March 6. "I'm ready to get rolling here and get ready for the season," Paxton said. "I feel confident that I'll have plenty of time to get myself ready for those (regular-season) games in April." The Mariners typically require pitchers to throw two bullpens and then throw two rounds of live batting practice before getting into a spring game.

Fantasy Tip: Paxton is on pace to be able to be ready for the start of the regular season if he can avoid any setbacks with his forearm. Keep an eye on him this spring and consider him a late-round flier in deep mixed leagues to fill out your fantasy rotation.
