Saints | New Orleans backfield taking shape

Thu, 16 Jun 2016 16:45:13 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram is the lead running back for the Saints, while RB Tim Hightower appears to be the backup, according to Larry Holder of The New Orleans Times-Picayune. RB C.J. Spiller holds the No. 3 spot.

Fantasy Tip: Hightower proved his worth later on last season in New Orleans when Ingram was sidelined. Ingram is still an RB1 when healthy, though. Spiller is a mid-round option in PPR leagues, while Hightower is a late-round handcuff consideration for Ingram in standard formats.

Saints | Coach talks C.J. Spiller

Mon, 13 Jun 2016 14:58:56 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller's "health and movement skills" were noticeably different, and he was a pleasant surprise during organized team activities, head coach Sean Payton said.

"He worked his butt off in the offseason to get the strength back in that knee. That's been really encouraging."

Fantasy Tip: Spiller never got on track following his knee surgery last August, and he was one of the most notable busts in fantasy last season. Otherwise, not much has changed, so some of the optimism accompanying a year ago should carry over. Spiller is worth a late-round grab in all fantasy formats with a better chance to become a weekly starter in PPR formats.

Saints | C.J. Spiller believes he fits offense

Sun, 12 Jun 2016 16:11:59 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller said his skill set is built for the Saints' offense, and he believes he can flourish now that he is 100% healthy.

Fantasy Tip: While it remains to be seen if injuries were the main reason for his disappointing 2015 season, Spiller is worth grabbing in the later rounds as a potential bounceback candidate, especially in PPR formats.

Saints | Surgery hindered C.J. Spiller

Sat, 11 Jun 2016 11:15:52 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller (knee) said knee surgery during training camp last season played a big role in his disappointing season. Spiller said he wasn't able to cut and stop like he normally would and he lacked the explosion that he's known for. Spiller said last season is behind him now and that the road to recovery is looking bright.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller was one of the more underwhelming players from a fantasy perspective last year. Mark Ingram will still garner the majority of carries out of the backfield, but Spiller shouldn't be overlooked. If he can stay healthy, he can attain at least RB4 status in PPR formats.

Saints | C.J. Spiller looks better

Thu, 26 May 2016 16:38:09 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller's (knee) health and movement skills are noticeably different so far this offseason, according to head coach Sean Payton. "He worked his butt off in the offseason to get the strength back in that leg he [injured]," Payton said. "That's been real encouraging."

Fantasy Tip: Poor health nagged Spiller all of last season, resulting in a disappointing inaugural campaign with the Saints. Looking better is encouraging, but he still has some proving and rebounding to do. Draft him as no more than a low-end RB4 in PPR leagues.

Saints | C.J. Spiller should improve

Thu, 18 Feb 2016 16:43:02 -0800

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller is expected to have more opportunities next season to be successful again, according to general manager Mickey Loomis. Loomis said he believes the "real C.J. Spiller" will be back next season and blamed a lack of good health for Spiller's 2015 hardships. It was originally speculated that Spiller could be cut this offseason after a dismal first season with New Orleans, but the Saints would save little in cutting him.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller is up there with some of the more disappointing players from last season. He was supposed to be the next Reggie Bush out of the Saints' backfield, but laid a goose egg. Mark Ingram is still the running back to own from the Saints, but Spiller could be an undervalued PPR sleeper.

Saints | C.J. Spiller expected to rebound

Tue, 16 Feb 2016 21:04:35 -0800

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller had a down year in 2015, but general manager Mickey Loomis attributed Spiller's lack of production to injuries and expects a rebound in 2016.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller could be a nice sleeper in 2016 after fantasy owners from last year have a bad taste in their mouth, and others are turned off by just looking at his statistics alone. When healthy he is an explosive player, and he could pay big dividends on draft day, especially for those in leagues which reward points per reception (PPR).

Saints | C.J. Spiller sticking in New Orleans?

Fri, 12 Feb 2016 18:32:03 -0800

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller will likely remain on the roster, at least into training camp, according to ESPN.com's Mike Triplett. Spiller will count more against the cap if he is cut before June 1.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller was a huge disappointment in his first year with the Saints, and if he remains with the team in 2016, he would be nothing more than a late-round lottery ticket for fantasy owners.

Saints | C.J. Spiller done in New Orleans?

Thu, 31 Dec 2015 09:12:11 -0800

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller had a career-low 36 carries for 112 yards and 34 catches for 239 yards and two touchdowns in 13 games this year for the Saints, and he lacked burst in the open field. He signed a four-year, $16 million deal with $9 million guaranteed last offseason, and the Saints could save $3.25 million against the salary cap by cutting him before June 1.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller was a fantasy draft darling this fall, but he never panned out in the Saints offense and never seemed to be in the good graces of Sean Payton. A lot will depend on whether the New Orleans coaching staff remains intact, but Spiller could benefit from a change of scenery. He'll be dirt-cheap in drafts next year and is worth a late-round flier in point-per-reception formats.

Saints | C.J. Spiller placed on IR

Wed, 30 Dec 2015 14:37:05 -0800

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller (head) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Wednesday, Dec. 30.

Fantasy Tip: The dismal year for Spiller has finally come to an end. Tim Hightower ($6,000, 12.0% of cap) and Travaris Cadet ($2,100, 4.2%) both have a great matchup against the Atlanta Falcons this week. Cadet is a nice PPR sleeper on FantasyScore, especially at his current price.
