Saints | New Orleans backfield taking shape

Thu, 16 Jun 2016 16:45:13 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram is the lead running back for the Saints, while RB Tim Hightower appears to be the backup, according to Larry Holder of The New Orleans Times-Picayune. RB C.J. Spiller holds the No. 3 spot.

Fantasy Tip: Hightower proved his worth later on last season in New Orleans when Ingram was sidelined. Ingram is still an RB1 when healthy, though. Spiller is a mid-round option in PPR leagues, while Hightower is a late-round handcuff consideration for Ingram in standard formats.

Saints | Coach talks C.J. Spiller

Mon, 13 Jun 2016 14:58:56 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller's "health and movement skills" were noticeably different, and he was a pleasant surprise during organized team activities, head coach Sean Payton said.

"He worked his butt off in the offseason to get the strength back in that knee. That's been really encouraging."

Fantasy Tip: Spiller never got on track following his knee surgery last August, and he was one of the most notable busts in fantasy last season. Otherwise, not much has changed, so some of the optimism accompanying a year ago should carry over. Spiller is worth a late-round grab in all fantasy formats with a better chance to become a weekly starter in PPR formats.

Saints | C.J. Spiller believes he fits offense

Sun, 12 Jun 2016 16:11:59 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller said his skill set is built for the Saints' offense, and he believes he can flourish now that he is 100% healthy.

Fantasy Tip: While it remains to be seen if injuries were the main reason for his disappointing 2015 season, Spiller is worth grabbing in the later rounds as a potential bounceback candidate, especially in PPR formats.

Saints | Surgery hindered C.J. Spiller

Sat, 11 Jun 2016 11:15:52 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller (knee) said knee surgery during training camp last season played a big role in his disappointing season. Spiller said he wasn't able to cut and stop like he normally would and he lacked the explosion that he's known for. Spiller said last season is behind him now and that the road to recovery is looking bright.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller was one of the more underwhelming players from a fantasy perspective last year. Mark Ingram will still garner the majority of carries out of the backfield, but Spiller shouldn't be overlooked. If he can stay healthy, he can attain at least RB4 status in PPR formats.

Saints | C.J. Spiller looks better

Thu, 26 May 2016 16:38:09 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller's (knee) health and movement skills are noticeably different so far this offseason, according to head coach Sean Payton. "He worked his butt off in the offseason to get the strength back in that leg he [injured]," Payton said. "That's been real encouraging."

Fantasy Tip: Poor health nagged Spiller all of last season, resulting in a disappointing inaugural campaign with the Saints. Looking better is encouraging, but he still has some proving and rebounding to do. Draft him as no more than a low-end RB4 in PPR leagues.

Saints | C.J. Spiller should improve

Thu, 18 Feb 2016 16:43:02 -0800

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller is expected to have more opportunities next season to be successful again, according to general manager Mickey Loomis. Loomis said he believes the "real C.J. Spiller" will be back next season and blamed a lack of good health for Spiller's 2015 hardships. It was originally speculated that Spiller could be cut this offseason after a dismal first season with New Orleans, but the Saints would save little in cutting him.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller is up there with some of the more disappointing players from last season. He was supposed to be the next Reggie Bush out of the Saints' backfield, but laid a goose egg. Mark Ingram is still the running back to own from the Saints, but Spiller could be an undervalued PPR sleeper.

Saints | C.J. Spiller expected to rebound

Tue, 16 Feb 2016 21:04:35 -0800

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller had a down year in 2015, but general manager Mickey Loomis attributed Spiller's lack of production to injuries and expects a rebound in 2016.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller could be a nice sleeper in 2016 after fantasy owners from last year have a bad taste in their mouth, and others are turned off by just looking at his statistics alone. When healthy he is an explosive player, and he could pay big dividends on draft day, especially for those in leagues which reward points per reception (PPR).

Saints | C.J. Spiller sticking in New Orleans?

Fri, 12 Feb 2016 18:32:03 -0800

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller will likely remain on the roster, at least into training camp, according to ESPN.com's Mike Triplett. Spiller will count more against the cap if he is cut before June 1.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller was a huge disappointment in his first year with the Saints, and if he remains with the team in 2016, he would be nothing more than a late-round lottery ticket for fantasy owners.

Saints | C.J. Spiller done in New Orleans?

Thu, 31 Dec 2015 09:12:11 -0800

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller had a career-low 36 carries for 112 yards and 34 catches for 239 yards and two touchdowns in 13 games this year for the Saints, and he lacked burst in the open field. He signed a four-year, $16 million deal with $9 million guaranteed last offseason, and the Saints could save $3.25 million against the salary cap by cutting him before June 1.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller was a fantasy draft darling this fall, but he never panned out in the Saints offense and never seemed to be in the good graces of Sean Payton. A lot will depend on whether the New Orleans coaching staff remains intact, but Spiller could benefit from a change of scenery. He'll be dirt-cheap in drafts next year and is worth a late-round flier in point-per-reception formats.

Saints | C.J. Spiller placed on IR

Wed, 30 Dec 2015 14:37:05 -0800

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller (head) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Wednesday, Dec. 30.

Fantasy Tip: The dismal year for Spiller has finally come to an end. Tim Hightower ($6,000, 12.0% of cap) and Travaris Cadet ($2,100, 4.2%) both have a great matchup against the Atlanta Falcons this week. Cadet is a nice PPR sleeper on FantasyScore, especially at his current price.

Saints | C.J. Spiller inactive

Sun, 27 Dec 2015 12:03:05 -0800

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller has been declared inactive for the Week 16 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Fantasy Tip: Tim Hightower ($4,800, 9.6% of cap) should receive most of the snaps at running back this week and will be involved in the running and passing game. Hightower has played well over the last two games and could be a cheaper running back for owners on FantasyScore.

Updating a previous report, New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller (head) returned to the Week 15 game against the Detroit Lions for the final offensive drive of the first half after leaving due to a head injury.

Fantasy Tip: When healthy, Spiller can be a valuable option for fantasy owners in leagues which reward points per reception (PPR).

Saints | C.J. Spiller taken to locker room

Mon, 21 Dec 2015 18:25:44 -0800

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller (head) went to the locker room in the first half of the Week 15 game against the Detroit Lions due to a possible head injury and concussion evaluation.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller likely will not be back after helmet-to-helmet contact. He doesn't see as many touches as fantasy owners would like anyway, even with Mark Ingram out of the picture.

Saints | Another quiet game for C.J. Spiller

Sun, 13 Dec 2015 17:19:40 -0800

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller had three carries for two yards and three catches for seven yards in a 24-17 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 14.

Fantasy Tip: Even with Mark Ingram out of action, Spiller remained an afterthought in the offense. There is no reason to consider Spiller at FantasyScore at this point.

Saints | Tim Hightower to be No. 1 back

Sun, 13 Dec 2015 08:02:25 -0800

New Orleans Saints RB Tim Hightower is expected to receive the bulk of the carries for the team going forward, with RB Mark Ingram (shoulder) on injured reserve, because of their similar running styles. RB C.J. Spiller's role appears unlikely to change.

Fantasy Tip: The 29-year-old Hightower ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) was signed by the Saints last month and hadn't played in the NFL since 2011 prior to that. He has 12 carries for 48 yards and could be a solid pickup as a flex player for deeper fantasy leagues down the stretch.

Saints | More touches for C.J. Spiller, Tim Hightower?

Wed, 09 Dec 2015 11:35:05 -0800

New Orleans Saints RBs C.J. Spiller and Tim Hightower could be in line for more snaps if RB Mark Ingram (shoulder) is out for the season. Spiller is averaging just 13.5 snaps and 5.5 touches per game with the Saints this year for 108 rushing yards, 216 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Spiller has just four touches in the last two games.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) has become a fantasy afterthought with the Saints this year after being a popular sleeper pick in the preseason. He would still be worth adding if he's available, but Tim Hightower ($2,000) better fits the role Ingram would leave behind, especially in standard scoring leagues.

Saints | C.J. Spiller an afterthought

Mon, 09 Nov 2015 06:28:07 -0800

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller played just six snaps Sunday, Nov. 8, against the Tennessee Titans.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller isn't a good option in fantasy until he carves up a bigger role in the offense.

Saints | Mark Ingram to see heavier workload

Mon, 02 Nov 2015 13:53:05 -0800

New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram is likely to see a heavier workload with RB Khiry Robinson (leg) out for the season, and Ingram could also be in line for more goal-line work. RB C.J. Spiller could also see an increase in workload, but the Saints are bringing him along slowly coming off injury, and he has averaged 16.7 snaps a game and hasn't been involved in more than 21 plays in seven games this year.

Fantasy Tip: It's inevitable that the fantasy values of Ingram and Spiller will increase with this injury to Robinson. You should feel more comfortable using Spiller in a flex spot on FantasyScore in the right matchups, and Ingram becomes a much safer running back selection in daily formats, as well.

Saints | C.J. Spiller finds end zone

Sun, 01 Nov 2015 19:13:11 -0800

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller rushed four times for 21 yards in the Week 8 game against the New York Giants and he added two catches for 15 yards and a touchdown.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) might pick up a few touches in the offense with Khiry Robinson ($2,500, 5.0% of cap) suffering what appeared to be a season-ending injury.

Saints | C.J. Spiller may receive bigger role

Sun, 01 Nov 2015 12:16:23 -0800

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller could receive a bigger role in the offense if RB Khiry Robinson (leg) is dealing with a significant injury.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller entered the season with high expectations with his new team but dealt with injuries during the season. Spiller could be involved in the running and passing game if Robinson misses several weeks and could be a flex option for owners.

Saints | C.J. Spiller not being used

Fri, 23 Oct 2015 18:36:25 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller received the fewest snaps of the team's top three backs against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 6 after head coach Sean Payton said he was going to "work real hard" to make sure that Spiller received enough touches in the game.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) has been underutilized all season, and despite Payton saying he was going to make sure he was more involved in the offense, he remained an afterthought. His big-play speed gives him some upside, but he is a high-risk play at FantasyScore until his role expands.

Saints | C.J. Spiller has been non-factor

Thu, 15 Oct 2015 09:11:40 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller had an 80-yard game-winning touchdown catch in an overtime win in Week 4, but he had just two yards on five touches in Week 5.

Fantasy Tip: The good news: the Atlanta Falcons, the Saints' Week 6 opponent Thursday night, has allowed the most PPR points to running backs per game (36.3), which includes a whopping 49 catches. Catching the ball out of the backfield is Spiller's ($3,800, 7.6% of cap) strength, so expect New Orleans to get him more involved. He's a great sleeper pick on FantasyScore tonight.

Saints | C.J. Spiller comes up big in OT

Sun, 04 Oct 2015 22:34:42 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller carried just twice for 10 yards in the Week 4 game against the Dallas Cowboys, but he had an 80-yard touchdown catch and run in overtime. He finished with five grabs for 99 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) has big-play ability, but he needs more than seven total touches to warrant using at a mid-level price in FantasyScore.

Saints | C.J. Spiller expected to see more work

Sun, 04 Oct 2015 07:31:20 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller is expected to receive more carries in the Week 4 game against the Dallas Cowboys, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) has received only two carries so far this season but probably will receive more as the season goes on. Spiller has been more involved in the passing game and likely has more value in point-per-reception leagues.

Saints | C.J. Spiller will be more involved

Mon, 28 Sep 2015 12:14:44 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller is completely healthy and the team needs to have him touch the ball more often, according to head coach Sean Payton.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller received one carry for four yards and caught two passes for 22 yards in Week 3 but likely will be more involved as the season goes on. He may see more work in the passing game, so he could be a starting option for owners in point-per-reception leagues.

Saints | C.J. Spiller not involved

Sun, 27 Sep 2015 16:56:02 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller had one carry for four yards and two catches for 22 yards in a 27-22 loss to the Carolina Panthers in Week 3.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) appears to be third in line for carries, and he hasn't made much of an impact in the passing game either. He needs to be avoided at FantasyScore until further notice.

Saints | New Orleans run game lacking

Wed, 23 Sep 2015 10:41:29 -0700

The New Orleans Saints running game is talented with RBs Mark Ingram, C.J. Spiller and Khiry Robinson, but they currently rank in the bottom fourth of the league in rushing yards per game (79) and yards per carry (3.36).

Fantasy Tip: Things won't get any easier for the running game if Drew Brees has to sit out this weekend against the Carolina Panthers, who have a stiff defensive front against the run. Even if Brees does play it could be tough sledding for the Saints ground game.

Saints | C.J. Spiller struggles in debut

Sun, 20 Sep 2015 18:14:18 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller had three carries for seven yards and one catch for 17 yards in a 26-19 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 2.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) missed Week 1 with a knee injury, so the quiet game could be a product of him being eased into the mix. However, he is a risky play at FantasyScore until he proves to be a consistent part of the offensive game plan.

Saints | C.J. Spiller in uniform for Week 2

Sun, 20 Sep 2015 08:36:17 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller (knee) is officially active for the Week 2 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) should see most of his targets in the passing game but could be limited since his first game back from knee surgery. Spiller could be a starting option in point-per-reception leagues this week.

Saints | C.J. Spiller expected to be active

Sun, 20 Sep 2015 07:07:37 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller (knee) is expected to play in the Week 2 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers despite being listed as questionable.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) is coming off knee surgery and would be making his 2015 debut if he plays. Spiller likely would see most of his involvement in the passing game and could be a starting option in point-per-receptions leagues.

Saints | C.J. Spiller questionable

Fri, 18 Sep 2015 16:13:25 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller (knee) was limited during practice Friday, Sept. 18, and listed as questionable for the Week 2 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Spiller said he felt good Thursday, Sept. 17, but would not say if he will be able to play.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) appears to be a game-time decision, so owners will have to check the inactive list to determine his status. Spiller may be limited if he is able to play in the game and may not be the best option for fantasy owners.

Saints | C.J. Spiller still limited

Thu, 17 Sep 2015 13:57:47 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller (knee) was still a limited participant in practice Thursday, Sept. 17.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) could wind up being a game-time decision for Week 2, so he'll need to be monitored heading into the weekend. Of course, if Spiller plays, he could see limited snaps. Waiting another week on Spiller may be the wiser decision.

Saints | C.J. Spiller up to speed

Thu, 17 Sep 2015 08:18:05 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller (knee) is up to speed because of all his work in training camp, according to head coach Sean Payton. It's uncertain whether Spiller will play in Week 2, and he could be limited if he goes.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) could be a beast in PPR formats when he returns, but he's not a good play on FantasyScore against Tampa Bay in Week 2.

Saints | C.J. Spiller listed as limited

Wed, 16 Sep 2015 15:06:23 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller (knee) was limited during practice Wednesday, Sept. 16.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) missed the opening game because of the injury, and his status for Week 2 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is still uncertain. Owners should continue to monitor his practice participation to see if he has a chance to play.

Fri, 11 Sep 2015 14:35:02 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller (knee) did not participate in practice Friday, Sept. 11, and has been ruled out for Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals.

Fantasy Tip: There is no timetable for Spiller's ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) return, so owners should keep an eye out on his status. Mark Ingram ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) should see most of the carries during the game and could be a starting option on FantasyScore. Khiry Robinson ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) could have a bigger role on offense but is not a great fantasy option.

Saints | C.J. Spiller misses practice

Thu, 10 Sep 2015 15:03:12 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller (knee) did not practice Thursday, Sept. 10. Spiller has already been ruled out for Week 1.

Fantasy Tip: It has yet to be determined, but Spiller may miss more than just Week 1, too. Mark Ingram and Khiry Robinson should see plenty of playing time out of the backfield. Ingram ($6,300, 12.6% of cap) is a worthy start on FantasyScore against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1.

Wed, 09 Sep 2015 14:44:31 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller (knee) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Sept. 9.

Fantasy Tip: Owners should monitor Spiller's ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) participation for the rest of the week but there is a chance that he misses the opener. Owners on FantasyScore may want to look for other options to use in their starting lineups.

Saints | C.J. Spiller will not play in opener

Tue, 08 Sep 2015 18:44:25 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller (knee) will not play in the regular season opener Sunday, Sept. 13, against the Arizona Cardinals as he is recovering from a minor knee surgery, a source said Tuesday, Sept. 8. He is likely to return for Week 2 and beyond.

Fantasy Tip: FantasyScore players can scratch Spiller ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) from their cheat sheet. It likely means a heavy dose of Mark Ingram ($6,300, 12.6% of cap), as well as more touches for Khiry Robinson ($2,000, 4.0% of cap).

Saints | C.J. Spiller should be ready

Wed, 19 Aug 2015 10:47:25 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller (knee) should be ready for the start of the regular season, according to head coach Sean Payton.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller recently underwent knee surgery and will need several weeks to recover, so he probably will not see any playing time in the preseason. Spiller likely will be part of the passing game this season and could also receive some carries. Spiller probably should be selected in late rounds of drafts, but he should have more value in point-per-reception leagues.

Saints | C.J. Spiller had knee surgery

Sat, 15 Aug 2015 13:15:47 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller (knee) underwent arthroscopic knee surgery Friday, Aug. 14, in Pensacola, FLA. Spiller is expected to be ready for the regular-season opener, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller played just nine games in 2014, and his health will be his biggest issue with the Saints. While he's firmly behind Mark Ingram on the depth chart, Spiller should get plenty of playing time in a pass-catching role. It is still tough to justify paying an RB2 price for Spiller in standard leagues.

Saints | C.J. Spiller not expected to play

Thu, 13 Aug 2015 09:26:06 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller is not expected to play in the first preseason game Thursday, Aug. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller is not expected to start this season but should have a solid role in the offense in 2015. Spiller probably will have more value in point-per-reception leagues since he should be involved in the passing game. Spiller could be a middle- to late-round option in most leagues.

Saints | C.J. Spiller third on depth chart

Mon, 10 Aug 2015 20:43:47 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller is listed third on the depth chart heading into the preseason opener Thursday, Aug. 13, against the Baltimore Ravens behind RBs Mark Ingram and Khiry Robinson. Spiller is listed as the primary kickoff and punt return man.

Fantasy Tip: Don't put a ton of stock into preseason depth charts, but monitor Spiller's performance in the first couple of preseason games. In this offense he has the chance to be a fantasy stud, especially in formats which reward points per reception (PPR).

Saints | C.J. Spiller sitting out

Fri, 07 Aug 2015 06:36:20 -0700

Saints | Lofty expectations for C.J. Spiller

Thu, 23 Jul 2015 14:47:50 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller could catch around 60 passes this year, in the opinion of Mike Triplett of ESPN.com.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller is certainly expected to be used in the passing game frequently. Mark Ingram should provide the thunder while Spiller provides the lightning, assuming he can stay healthy. View Spiller as a RB2 in PPR leagues this season.

Saints | C.J. Spiller has run well vs. NFC

Sat, 11 Jul 2015 11:54:53 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller has averaged 5.56 yards per carry against NFC teams over his five-year career. Spiller and the Saints will face NFC teams 12 times in the 2015 regular season.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller may not do a whole lot of running for the Saints, as Mark Ingram and Khiry Robinson will probably see the majority of carries. Spiller's specialty is in the passing game, but it's still encouraging that he has seen that success on the ground versus NFC opponents. He has also played well on turf, on which the Saints will play their home games.

Saints | C.J. Spiller has done well on turf

Tue, 07 Jul 2015 16:43:40 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller has averaged 5.02 yards and 7.66 yards on 501 career attempts and 109 career receptions, respectively, when playing on turf -- the surface he'll be playing on in New Orleans.

Fantasy Tip: This is promising news for Spiller, who will play at least half of his games in 2015 on turf. Mark Ingram will see the majority of work on the ground, but Spiller will be the primary pass-catching option out of the backfield. The key for Spiller will be staying healthy. He should be drafted as a low-end RB2 in PPR scoring leagues.

Saints | C.J. Spiller a good fit in New Orleans?

Sun, 28 Jun 2015 17:52:44 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller has a perfect skill-set for head coach Sean Payton's system, which relies on getting the ball to players in space, according Chris Wesseling of NFL.com. Wesseling believes Spiller is significantly more talented than RB Reggie Bush and RB Darren Sproles, who both thrived in Payton's system.

Fantasy Tip: Pass-catching backs like Spiller have enjoyed a lot of success in Payton's system. He has a good chance to slide into RB2 territory in PPR formats, and he should make a solid flex option in standard leagues.
