Saints | C.J. Spiller should be ready

Wed, 19 Aug 2015 10:47:25 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller (knee) should be ready for the start of the regular season, according to head coach Sean Payton.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller recently underwent knee surgery and will need several weeks to recover, so he probably will not see any playing time in the preseason. Spiller likely will be part of the passing game this season and could also receive some carries. Spiller probably should be selected in late rounds of drafts, but he should have more value in point-per-reception leagues.

Saints | C.J. Spiller had knee surgery

Sat, 15 Aug 2015 13:15:47 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller (knee) underwent arthroscopic knee surgery Friday, Aug. 14, in Pensacola, FLA. Spiller is expected to be ready for the regular-season opener, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller played just nine games in 2014, and his health will be his biggest issue with the Saints. While he's firmly behind Mark Ingram on the depth chart, Spiller should get plenty of playing time in a pass-catching role. It is still tough to justify paying an RB2 price for Spiller in standard leagues.

Saints | C.J. Spiller not expected to play

Thu, 13 Aug 2015 09:26:06 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller is not expected to play in the first preseason game Thursday, Aug. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller is not expected to start this season but should have a solid role in the offense in 2015. Spiller probably will have more value in point-per-reception leagues since he should be involved in the passing game. Spiller could be a middle- to late-round option in most leagues.

Saints | C.J. Spiller third on depth chart

Mon, 10 Aug 2015 20:43:47 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller is listed third on the depth chart heading into the preseason opener Thursday, Aug. 13, against the Baltimore Ravens behind RBs Mark Ingram and Khiry Robinson. Spiller is listed as the primary kickoff and punt return man.

Fantasy Tip: Don't put a ton of stock into preseason depth charts, but monitor Spiller's performance in the first couple of preseason games. In this offense he has the chance to be a fantasy stud, especially in formats which reward points per reception (PPR).

Saints | C.J. Spiller sitting out

Fri, 07 Aug 2015 06:36:20 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller is not practicing Friday, Aug. 7.

Fantasy Tip: It's most likely a rest day. Spiller figures to have a big impact in PPR formats as an RB2.

Saints | Lofty expectations for C.J. Spiller

Thu, 23 Jul 2015 14:47:50 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller could catch around 60 passes this year, in the opinion of Mike Triplett of ESPN.com.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller is certainly expected to be used in the passing game frequently. Mark Ingram should provide the thunder while Spiller provides the lightning, assuming he can stay healthy. View Spiller as a RB2 in PPR leagues this season.

Saints | C.J. Spiller has run well vs. NFC

Sat, 11 Jul 2015 11:54:53 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller has averaged 5.56 yards per carry against NFC teams over his five-year career. Spiller and the Saints will face NFC teams 12 times in the 2015 regular season.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller may not do a whole lot of running for the Saints, as Mark Ingram and Khiry Robinson will probably see the majority of carries. Spiller's specialty is in the passing game, but it's still encouraging that he has seen that success on the ground versus NFC opponents. He has also played well on turf, on which the Saints will play their home games.

Saints | C.J. Spiller has done well on turf

Tue, 07 Jul 2015 16:43:40 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller has averaged 5.02 yards and 7.66 yards on 501 career attempts and 109 career receptions, respectively, when playing on turf -- the surface he'll be playing on in New Orleans.

Fantasy Tip: This is promising news for Spiller, who will play at least half of his games in 2015 on turf. Mark Ingram will see the majority of work on the ground, but Spiller will be the primary pass-catching option out of the backfield. The key for Spiller will be staying healthy. He should be drafted as a low-end RB2 in PPR scoring leagues.

Saints | C.J. Spiller a good fit in New Orleans?

Sun, 28 Jun 2015 17:52:44 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller has a perfect skill-set for head coach Sean Payton's system, which relies on getting the ball to players in space, according Chris Wesseling of NFL.com. Wesseling believes Spiller is significantly more talented than RB Reggie Bush and RB Darren Sproles, who both thrived in Payton's system.

Fantasy Tip: Pass-catching backs like Spiller have enjoyed a lot of success in Payton's system. He has a good chance to slide into RB2 territory in PPR formats, and he should make a solid flex option in standard leagues.

Saints | HC excited to use C.J. Spiller

Fri, 19 Jun 2015 13:37:51 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller will have plays designed specifically for him in head coach Sean Payton's offense. Payton said he's anxious to see how Spiller fits into the offense with his speed and good hands.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller will assume the role previously held by Reggie Bush, Darren Sproles and Pierre Thomas. The aforementioned running backs were all legitimate pass-catching threats in Payton's pass-happy offense. The key for Spiller will be staying healthy after suffering a broken collarbone last season. If he can stay on the field, he has RB2 potential in point-per-reception leagues.

Saints | C.J. Spiller could see most touches

Wed, 03 Jun 2015 06:20:32 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller could lead the team in touches over RB Mark Ingram, in the opinion of beat writer Nick Underhill.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller appears to fit the team's no-huddle style well, and Ingram isn't much of a receiver. Spiller could fall into the role that Darren Sproles did so well in NOLA. He's a low-end RB2 in PPR leagues, while Ingram is on par with that for the between-the-tackles work.

Saints | Sean Payton high on C.J. Spiller

Thu, 26 Mar 2015 10:11:13 -0700

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller received some praise from head coach Sean Payton after the team was surprised to be able to land him in free agency. "His cutup is unbelievable," Payton said of Spiller. "And I'm not talking about last season because I think it became challenging, but you go back a couple of years and start looking at his screen reel, a sweep reel, a return reel."

Fantasy Tip: It'll be a committee approach in New Orleans again with Mark Ingram and Spiller (surprise, surprise), but the fantasy outlook for both runners should be positive. The Saints have a history of finding success for pass-catching backs like Spiller, so he could be a fine value in point-per-reception leagues, and he still has plenty of upside left.

Fri, 13 Mar 2015 09:45:33 -0700

Free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Bills) agreed to terms with the New Orleans Saints Friday, March 13.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller is an interesting fit in New Orleans. He has great hands out of the backfield and is quick. He should see plenty of looks as the team tries to find a way to replace Jimmy Graham. Spiller has RB2 potential heading into the 2015 season.

Saints | C.J. Spiller to visit NOLA

Wed, 11 Mar 2015 20:13:27 -0700

Free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Bills) is scheduled to meet with the New Orleans Saints Thursday, March 12, according to a league source.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller would likely fill the role previously held by Darren Sproles in the Crescent City. He would improve the Saints return game, and he has great hands out of the backfield and speed to burn. It would be an interesting fit, and there is plenty of ball to go around in short-yardage receiving situations now that Jimmy Graham is in Seattle.

Cowboys | Dallas in the mix for C.J. Spiller

Wed, 11 Mar 2015 15:01:10 -0700

Free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Bills) could still be pursued by the Dallas Cowboys if free-agent RB DeMarco Murray (Cowboys) is not re-signed.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller would likely take over as starter if Murray were to leave and Spiller be signed, giving him a nice boost and RB2 potential heading into the 2015 season. Of course, a lot needs to happen still for that to take place, including Spiller maintaining his health.

Saints | C.J. Spiller being pursued by NO

Wed, 11 Mar 2015 14:52:30 -0700

Free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Bills) has reportedly drawn interest from the New Orleans Saints.

Fantasy Tip: The Saints are in need of a pass-catching running back with the departure of Pierre Thomas; although, Spiller would still be splitting time with RBs Mark Ingram and Khiry Robinson. It's still too early to determine Spiller's value, but he'll probably be no more than a low-end RB2 no matter where he ends up.

Tue, 10 Mar 2015 15:05:32 -0700

Free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Bills) has received interest from the New England Patriots.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller likely would have a role similar to the one Shane Vereen had over the past several seasons. Spiller would be a valuable option in point-per-reception leagues if he signs with the Patriots and could be a middle-round pick in drafts next season.

Cowboys | DAL may look at C.J. Spiller

Sun, 08 Mar 2015 00:02:37 -0800

Free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Bills) may get interest from the Dallas Cowboys if RB DeMarco Murray leaves via free agency.

Fantasy Tip: The biggest worry for the Cowboys is Spiller's injury history. He had a better season in 2014, but Spiller is still a risky pick in most leagues due to his spotty playing time and his tendency to get hurt.

Redskins | Washington interested in C.J. Spiller

Fri, 06 Mar 2015 21:45:34 -0800

The Washington Redskins are one of several teams with interest in free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Bills), multiple league sources said Friday, March 6.

Fantasy Tip: If Spiller were to head to D.C. it would be bad for the fantasy appeal of Alfred Morris, who would certainly be in line to lose carries. Spiller has good hands out of the backfield, something Morris simply cannot give the team. Spiller could be a nice RB2 or flex fantasy option in 2015 given the right situation, while Morris would likely tumble into that RB2 area with such an addition.

The New England Patriots are one of several teams with interest in free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Bills), multiple league sources said Friday, March 6.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller could be a welcome addition to the defending champs, something the rest of the league certainly does not want to see. He could be a nice low-end RB1 or must-start RB2 or flex fantasy option in Foxboro.

Lions | C.J. Spiller to Motown?

Fri, 06 Mar 2015 21:39:12 -0800

The Detroit Lions are one of several teams with interest in free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Bills), multiple league sources said Friday, March 6.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller could be a nice option on the quick turf in Detroit, giving Matthew Stafford another target in the offense. An addition of Spiller would make everyone in Honolulu blue and silver except for Joique Bell and his fantasy owners. Spiller could be a nice low-end RB1 or must-start RB2 or flex fantasy option in 2015 given the right situation.

Fri, 06 Mar 2015 21:38:30 -0800

The New York Jets are one of several teams with interest in free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Bills), multiple league sources said Friday, March 6. Offensive coordinator Chan Gailey drafted Spiller in 2010 when he was head coach of the Buffalo Bills.

Fantasy Tip: If Spiller were to land with the Jets, he would be another tremendous offensive option to go along with Brandon Marshall. He could be a nice low-end RB1 or must-start RB2 or flex fantasy option in 2015 given the right situation.

The San Francisco 49ers are one of several teams with interest in free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Bills), multiple league sources said Friday, March 6.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller could be the running back of the future with Frank Gore getting long in the tooth and no real long-term prospects on the roster. He could be a nice low-end RB1 or must-start RB2 or flex fantasy option in 2015 given the right situation.

The Miami Dolphins are one of several teams with interest in free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Bills), multiple league sources said Friday, March 6.

Fantasy Tip: Miami would be a great destination for the former Clemson standout, as they have no real No. 1 tailback. He could find himself in line for more carries than any of his other potential landing spots. Spiller could be a nice low-end RB1 or flex fantasy option in Miami.

Fri, 06 Mar 2015 21:34:42 -0800

The Arizona Cardinals are one of several teams with interest in free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Bills), multiple league sources said Friday, March 6.

Fantasy Tip: If Spiller were to land in Glendale, he could be a solid fantasy option in an offense with very nice receivers while playing in tremendous conditions in the desert for his home games. He could be a nice low-end RB1 or must-start RB2 or flex fantasy option in 2015 given the right situation.

Eagles | C.J. Spiller may be on Philly's radar

Wed, 04 Mar 2015 16:43:07 -0800

Buffalo Bills impending free-agent RB C.J. Spiller may be on the Philadelphia Eagles' radar in free agency, according to source. However, Spiller won't be Eagles head coach Chip Kelly's highest priority.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller should carry more fantasy football value in point-per-reception leagues, and it'll be interesting to see where he lands. A move to Philadelphia would be intriguing for a number of reasons, mainly giving him upside in Kelly's dynamic offense. However, he'd be sharing touches with Darren Sproles and Chris Polk, too.

Bills | C.J. Spiller won't return to Buffalo

Tue, 03 Mar 2015 16:28:02 -0800

Buffalo Bills impending free-agent RB C.J. Spiller said Tuesday, March 3, that the Bills called him and thanked him for his services. In summary, Spiller won't be coming back to the Bills next season.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller still has some gas left in the tank, so it will be interesting to see where he lands. Wherever he goes, he'll probably still be splitting time in the backfield, but should have more value in point-per-reception leagues.

Jets | C.J. Spiller fond of Jets

Tue, 24 Feb 2015 15:17:59 -0800

Buffalo Bills impending free-agent RB C.J. Spiller made it very clear that he's a fan of Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey. Gailey coached Spiller from 2010 to 2012 with the Bills. "His offense is going to be very creative," Spiller said. "He's going put his players in the best situations to win matchups. Just a humble guy. First class. Goes about his business the right way. He's going to treat his men like men." The Jets have a hole at running back with RBs Chris Johnson and Bilal Powell poised to leave.

Fantasy Tip: A reunion with Gailey seems like the perfect fit for Spiller. If it indeed happens, he'll make for an intriguing back to complement with Chris Ivory's downhill running style. Spiller could easily be a sleeper running back in PPR leagues with any organization that he lands with, but the Jets would present him with a great opportunity at a bounce-back season.

Jets | C.J. Spiller an option for Jets?

Fri, 16 Jan 2015 16:08:23 -0800

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller, who will be a free agent this offseason, could be eyeing a move to the New York Jets, where he could be reunited with his former offensive coordinator in Chan Gailey. Spiller could be targeted if Gailey gets the job in New York after Spiller had 1,703 total yards, eight touchdowns and 43 catches in 2012 with Gailey. "There is that familiarity between me and him in that offense," Spiller said. "So that would be a perfect match. Who knows what can happen, but I'd be foolish not to have those guys on my list. I had my best years in the league with Chan. So it'd be dumb not to give it serious thought."

Fantasy Tip: Spiller would surely gain some fantasy football appeal back if he reconnects with Gailey in New York next season. Spiller's 2014 season was a disappointment mainly because of injury, but if he can stay healthy next year with a new team, he could be a nice value pick in drafts, especially in PPR leagues.

Bills | Buffalo would like C.J. Spiller back

Thu, 15 Jan 2015 12:31:42 -0800

Buffalo Bills impending free-agent RB C.J. Spiller is a player the Bills will try to re-sign this offseason, according to general manager Doug Whaley.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller's fantasy value will be determined by which team he will sign with this offseason. Spiller probably would have a solid role in the offense if he re-signs with the team but also has an injury history and would be splitting time with Jackson. Spiller should be considered a flex option in drafts next season if he returns to Buffalo.

Bills | C.J. Spiller happy about Rex Ryan hire

Mon, 12 Jan 2015 13:34:41 -0800

Buffalo Bills impending free-agent RB C.J. Spiller said he likes the team's hiring of head coach Rex Ryan, because Ryan likes to run the ball and have a physical offense.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller will be a free agent this season, so there is a chance he may not play for the Bills in 2015. Spiller's fantasy value will depend on which team he signs with this offseason. Owners should consider Spiller as depth at running back for their teams next season for now.

Bills | C.J. Spiller unlikely to return in 2015?

Tue, 23 Dec 2014 17:21:41 -0800

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller has just a 30% chance to re-sign with the team as an unrestricted free agent during the offseason, according to Jay Skurski of the Buffalo News. "The writing was on the wall for Spiller the moment the Bills traded for running back Bryce Brown in May, and nothing that has happened this season makes it any more likely the team's 2010 first-round pick would return for a sixth season," Skurski wrote.

Fantasy Tip: If Spiller does sign elsewhere in the offseason, Brown becomes a nice upside pick to target in drafts. Fred Jackson is still under contract for another year, but he is already on the older end of the spectrum when it comes to running backs.

Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (shoulder) was limited in practice Friday, Dec. 19. Spiller is probable for Week 16.

Fantasy Tip: While the matchup is a good one, Spiller is a risky play this week in FantasyScore because it is his first game back. His touches may be limited.

Bills | C.J. Spiller probable for Week 16

Fri, 19 Dec 2014 09:47:52 -0800

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (shoulder) has been added to the active roster and is probable for Week 16 against the Oakland Raiders.

Fantasy Tip: It's a late development this week for fantasy football players at FantasyScore, but Spiller is definitely a cheap option worth considering against the Oakland Raiders, who have struggled against running backs. However, know that Spiller is a risk, since his touches may be limited in his first game back.

Bills | C.J. Spiller not yet on roster

Wed, 17 Dec 2014 16:00:31 -0800

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (collarbone) has not yet been added to the active roster from the short-term Reserve/Injured list. The Bills must add him by Dec. 24, but they must make that move by Saturday, Dec. 20, if they want him to be eligible to play in Week 16 against the Oakland Raiders. Spiller was limited in practice Wednesday, Dec. 17, and he said he's feeling good. The team hasn't made a decision on whether he'll play against the Raiders.

Fantasy Tip: The Bills are likely waiting for another day or two to see what Spiller looks like in practice before making a decision for this weekend. Spiller is a very risky play at FantasyScore this weekend, even if he does suit up.

Bills | C.J. Spiller limited

Wed, 17 Dec 2014 11:04:53 -0800

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (shoulder) was limited during practice Wednesday, Dec. 17.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller could be active for Week 16 but likely would not receive a normal workload since he has missed most of the season with the shoulder injury. Spiller costs $4,000 on FantasyScore and is a risky option because of the injury, but does have a favorable matchup if he is active for the game.

Bills | C.J. Spiller to return to roster this week

Mon, 15 Dec 2014 12:15:58 -0800

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (shoulder) will reclaim a roster spot this week, according to head coach Doug Marrone. Spiller has been cleared and it will be decided if he plays based on how he practices, Marrone added.

Fantasy Tip: It's still too early to tell if Spiller will be able to play this week. It will probably be best to wait a week anyway to see how much he'll be used when he returns. In other words, it might be best to wait until next fantasy football season to start Spiller again.

Bills | C.J. Spiller on the field

Wed, 03 Dec 2014 09:30:36 -0800

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (shoulder) is participating in practice Wednesday, Dec. 3. Spiller is currently on the Active/Reserve/Injured list and is not eligible to play until Week 16.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller is working his way back from the injury but will not be a factor in fantasy leagues for at least another two weeks. Owners should keep him on the bench until he returns. Fred Jackson likely will receive most of the carries until Spiller is able to return. Jackson will be facing a tough Denver Broncos run defense in Week 14, which could make him a risky option on FantasyScore at $5,400.

Bills | C.J. Spiller hopeful of return

Mon, 01 Dec 2014 14:43:13 -0800

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (shoulder), who is on the short-term Reserve/Injured list, has been making good progress in his effort to return before the end of the season, according to head coach Doug Marrone. Spiller can resume practicing with the team Wednesday, Dec. 3, if he's ready. He won't be able to return until Week 16 against the Oakland Raiders, however.

Fantasy Tip: Unfortunately for fantasy owners in standard leagues, Spiller won't be of much use if he returns in Week 16, which is the fantasy championship for most leagues. However, he could be a sneaky play at FantasyScore that week if he's guaranteed to see valuable touches against Oakland.

Mon, 20 Oct 2014 11:57:00 -0700

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (collarbone) underwent surgery Monday, Oct. 20, to repair his broken collarbone. Head coach Doug Marrone said he will have to wait to hear from the doctors about a timetable.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller probably will miss most, if not all, of the rest of the season because of the injury. Anthony Dixon and Bryce Brown likely will share the work until Fred Jackson comes back. They could be flex options on FantasyScore depending on their price.

Sun, 19 Oct 2014 11:29:59 -0700

Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (shoulder) is undergoing an X-ray to hopefully rule out a possible broken clavicle.

Fantasy Tip: Spiller likely would miss several weeks if he has a broken clavicle, so owners will need to wait to see the results of the X-rays. Anthony Dixon could become the starting running back if Spiller and Fred Jackson miss time and could be a solid starting option on FantasyScore, depending on the price.
