Cardinals | Evaluating catcher situation

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 00:27:49 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak plans to spend the next week evaluating whether C Tony Cruz and C George Kottaras will be a solution for the rest of the season or whether the team will seek a catcher at the deadline. "One thing we've always said is we'd like to see what Tony Cruz is capable of doing on a day in and day out basis," said Mozeliak. "But having said that, we also want to give ourselves the best chance to win."

Cardinals | Yadier Molina out at least two months

Thu, 10 Jul 2014 12:55:12 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals C Yadier Molina (thumb) has a torn ligament in his thumb and will be out eight to 12 weeks.

Fantasy Tip: This is a prolonged period of time and could end Molina's season. He is worth stashing in a disabled list slot in all formats, but fantasy owners should not bank on him helping significantly again in 2014. Tony Cruz should see the majority of starts behind the plate. In NL-only formats, Cruz's value goes up considerably.

Cardinals | Tony Cruz activated from disabled list

Sun, 01 Sep 2013 12:17:25 -0700

The St. Louis Cardinals have activated C Tony Cruz (forearm) from the 15-day disabled list to serve as emergency protection behind the plate. However, his baseball activities have been limited to throwing and he hopes to receive clearance to resume swinging a bat Wednesday, Sept. 4, or Thursday, Sept. 5.

Fantasy Tip: Rob Johnson will continue serving as the No. 2 catcher behind Yadier Molina while Cruz's condition improves. Neither Johnson nor Cruz have any fantasy value.

Cardinals | Talking to Kelly Shoppach

Thu, 01 Aug 2013 09:04:31 -0700

The St. Louis Cardinals are considering signing free-agent C Kelly Shoppach (Nationals) with C Yadier Molina (knee) on the disabled list. If they don't add Shoppach, Cs Rob Johnson and Tony Cruz will split duties behind the plate until Molina is ready to return.

Cardinals | Yadier Molina's MRI results

Wed, 31 Jul 2013 14:18:26 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals C Yadier Molina's (knee) MRI results showed only inflammation and swelling and no structural damage. The team is hoping he can return from the disabled list when eligible.

Fantasy Tip: This is great news for Molina owners. Hopefully he can return from the DL when eligible, and it's probably why the Cards didn't pursue a catcher at the trade deadline. Tony Cruz will be the club's primary catcher with Molina out.

Cardinals | Yadier Molina awaiting MRI result

Wed, 31 Jul 2013 11:43:46 -0700

The St. Louis Cardinals are awaiting the result of an MRI on C Yadier Molina (knee) before they estimate a timetable for his return. "I tried to play through it, but it's getting worse," Molina said on Tuesday, July 30. "The smart thing is to take time off and try to fix it. I've been playing through that since June." C's Tony Cruz and Rob Johnson will split duties behind the plate while Molina is sidelined.

Fantasy Tip: Sounds like this move is for the best for Molina, and maybe even for his fantasy owners. Perhaps it would've been even better had it come a month ago. Cruz and Johnson are unlikely to have fantasy value, except perhaps in deep NL-only leagues.
