Packers | James Starks faces tough test

Tue, 29 Nov 2016 12:22:54 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks will be up against a Houston Texans defense in Week 13 that has allowed only 58.8 rushing yards per game since Week 8. The Texans have not allowed a rushing touchdown since then.

Fantasy Tip: This matchup certainly doesn't bode well for Starks, who only managed 41 yards on 17 carries in Week 12. Don't view Starks as more than a flex option, if you can help it.

Packers | James Starks totals 68 yards

Mon, 28 Nov 2016 21:20:35 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks rushed 17 times for 41 yards in the Week 12 game against the Philadelphia Eagles Monday, Nov. 28. He also added five receptions for 27 yards on his five targets.

Fantasy Tip: Starks had a season high in rushing yardage, but that's not saying much. He is still nothing more than a low-end RB3 in all fantasy formats heading into Week 13 against the Houston Texans.

Packers | James Starks has 10 touches in return

Sun, 13 Nov 2016 16:59:37 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (knee) returned to the lineup in Week 10 against the Tennessee Titans. He rushed seven times for a team-high 33 yards and he added three grabs for 11 yards and a touchdown on four targets.

Fantasy Tip: Starks' return is very welcome, as they had been using WR Ty Montgomery in the backfield out of necessity due to injury concerns. Starks faces a good fantasy matchup when the Packers travel to Washington in Week 11.

Packers | James Starks active for Week 10

Sun, 13 Nov 2016 08:35:37 -0800

Updating a previous report, Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (knee) is active for Week 10's game against the Tennessee Titans.

Fantasy Tip: Starks is expected to serve as the backup to Ty Montgomery at running back and is worthy of consideration as a flex option in deeper seasonal leagues.

Packers | GB hopeful that James Starks can play

Sun, 13 Nov 2016 06:25:05 -0800

The Green Bay Packers are hopeful that RB James Starks (knee) can play in Week 10's game against the Tennessee Titans but a final decision about his status will not be made until after he participates in warmups, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Starks was a limited participant in practice throughout the week and is likely to see just a handful of carries in his first game back from knee surgery. He should only be considered as a possible flex option in deep seasonal leagues.

Packers | James Starks gets in another practice

Fri, 11 Nov 2016 13:44:21 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (knee) was a limited participant at practice for the third consecutive day Friday, Nov. 11.

Fantasy Tip: It looks like Starks will be able to make his return from knee surgery in Week 10, but owners might want to use some caution, as his usage will be unknown in his first game back. Ty Montgomery has emerged as the starting running back in Green Bay and figures to take on a regular workload this weekend, which could mean Starks will be saddled with very limited opportunities. He deserves consideration as a flex option only in deeper formats.

Packers | James Starks also limited

Thu, 10 Nov 2016 14:38:34 -0800

Updating a previous report, Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (knee) was limited in practice Thursday, Nov. 10.

Fantasy Tip: It looks like Starks is primed to make his return to the field against the Tennessee Titans. Of course, don't expect him to receive a full complement of carries upon his return. The most likely scenario is that he and Ty Montgomery will split touches. As is the case with many returns from injury, it might be best to wait on Starks for at least a week.

Packers | James Starks has a chance to play

Thu, 10 Nov 2016 10:47:32 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (knee) participated in contact drills during the media access portion of practice Thursday, Nov. 10. He should have a decent chance to play in Week 10 unless he suffers a setback.

Fantasy Tip: It is not known if Starks would have to share carries with Ty Montgomery or if he would receive a majority of the carries if he plays in Week 10. There is a decent chance that he will be eased back into the offense, which would hurt his fantasy value. Owners could consider him as a flex option if he is active.

Packers | James Starks listed as limited

Wed, 09 Nov 2016 15:10:52 -0800

Green Bay Packers TE James Starks (knee) was limited during practice Wednesday, Nov. 9.

Fantasy Tip: Starks' status for Week 10 is not known at this point, but it is a good sign that he is able to do things during practice. It is not known how many carries he would receive if he plays in Week 10 but could be a flex option in some leagues.

Packers | James Starks to miss Week 9

Fri, 04 Nov 2016 13:54:45 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (knee) has been ruled out for Week 9 versus the Indianapolis Colts.

Fantasy Tip: Starks appears to be trending toward a Week 10 return. His impending return seems to have created quite a stir given his likely status as the lead back in a good offense and the state of his position in the fantasy world, but Starks was horrible (1.8 yards per carry) prior to his injury. Ty Montgomery could easily remain the starter for the rest of the year if he can stay healthy, meaning Starks isn't exactly a must-add when he is cleared.

CB Demetri Goodson (concussion), LB Clay Matthews (hamstring) and CB Quinten Rollins (groin) are listed as questionable. Goodson, Randall and Tretter did not participate in practice Friday, Nov. 4. Cook, Starks, Matthews and Rollins were limited during practice. OG T.J. Lang (hip) was limited during practice and is not on the injury report. The Packers did not practice Friday, so these are estimations.

Packers | James Starks to see some work

Thu, 03 Nov 2016 08:49:11 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (knee) will be a limited participant in practice Thursday, Nov. 3.

Fantasy Tip: If Starks can suit up, he figures to be a decent flex option as decimated as the team is at the position. The Indianapolis Colts haven't been good against opposing running backs, and if Starks can even see a 50 percent share, he'd make a good flex play.

Packers | James Starks to do limited work

Wed, 02 Nov 2016 09:33:47 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (knee) will be limited in practice Wednesday, Nov. 2.

Fantasy Tip: It'll be the first time he has practiced since knee surgery, which he had about two-and-a-half weeks ago. He's pretty iffy for the Week 9 game against the Indianapolis Colts.

Packers | James Starks may miss four weeks

Mon, 17 Oct 2016 15:34:25 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (knee) is expected to miss around four weeks after undergoing knee surgery this past weekend. The Packers is considering Starks week-to-week at this point.

Fantasy Tip: Eddie Lacy will receive a lot of work while Starks is sidelined, but he is also dealing with an injury. Owners should keep an eye on Lacy's practice participation this week to make sure he will be able to play in Week 7. He should be a starting option in all leagues if he is healthy.

Packers | James Starks not at practice

Mon, 17 Oct 2016 14:41:17 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (knee) sat out of practice Monday, Oct. 17. The Packers did not practice; Starks' status is an estimation.

Fantasy Tip: Starks' fantasy value hinges on the availability of Eddie Lacy, but Starks' own health is also not at 100 percent. If Green Bay's running backs are limited this week, then they could look to pass more against the Chicago Bears on Thursday night. Keep tabs on the progress of Starks and Lacy over the next couple of days before making any lineup decisions.

Packers | James Starks expected back soon

Mon, 17 Oct 2016 11:22:06 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (knee) underwent meniscus surgery Sunday, Oct. 16, and is expected to make a quick recovery, according to head coach Mike McCarthy.

Fantasy Tip: "Quick" obviously does not help owners, but the same could be said for Starks this season as well. Common sense would suggest he's not going to return in time for Thursday night's game against the Chicago Bears, and he's probably going to be questionable at best for Week 8 at the Atlanta Falcons. Even with Eddie Lacy dealing with an ankle injury, Starks is not a recommended handcuff and should be on waiver wire in most leagues.

Packers | James Starks undergoes surgery

Sun, 16 Oct 2016 10:36:40 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (knee) underwent knee surgery Sunday, Oct. 16, and will miss several weeks.

Fantasy Tip: The Packers likely will add another running back in the near future, but Eddie Lacy will receive most of the work at running back until Starks returns. Lacy should be a weekly starter for owners as long as he can stay healthy.

Packers | James Starks may miss more time

Sat, 15 Oct 2016 12:40:00 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (knee) could miss multiple weeks because of his knee injury. The Packers do not know the severity of the injury at this point because Starks was away from the team this week because of a personal issue. It is believed that Starks has a meniscus injury, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Owners should keep an eye on the situation because Eddie Lacy could see more touches if Starks is out for a while. Lacy should be a weekly starting option in most leagues and is a solid starting candidate this week.

Packers | James Starks will not play

Sat, 15 Oct 2016 12:04:18 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (knee) has been ruled out for the team's Week 6 game.

Fantasy Tip: Eddie Lacy likely will be able to play and will see a lot of playing time with Starks out of the lineup. Owners in all leagues should consider Lacy a low-end No. 1 or a No. 2 running back this week.

Packers | James Starks ruled out Week 6

Sat, 15 Oct 2016 11:56:21 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (knee) will not play Week 6 versus the Dallas Cowboys.

Fantasy Tip: This was an expected development considering Starks has been away from the team dealing with the death in the family and was said to be behind Eddie Lacy in terms of his readiness for this contest. The Packers still have yet to promote practice-squader Don Jackson, leaving receivers Randall Cobb and Ty Montgomery as the main backups for Lacy, who should be considered a risky RB2 this weekend given his ankle injury.

Packers | James Starks questionable

Fri, 14 Oct 2016 13:17:34 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (knee) did not participate in practice Friday, Oct. 14, and is listed as questionable for Week 6. The Packers did not practice Friday, so this is an estimation.

Fantasy Tip: Starks has been away from the team this week because of a personal issue, so he may be a game-time decision. He has received limited playing time this season and probably is not a great fantasy option even if he plays.

Packers | James Starks sidelined again

Thu, 13 Oct 2016 14:25:29 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (knee) did not practice Thursday, Oct. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Even if Starks is healthy enough to play, he would only have legitimate value if Eddie Lacy is ruled out, and that doesn't seem likely at this point. If Starks suits up, it's best to leave him on the bench in a hard matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.

Packers | James Starks unlikely to practice this week

Thu, 13 Oct 2016 09:08:14 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (knee, personal) is away from the team because of a death in his family and will not return until Saturday, Oct. 15. He also suffered his knee injury during a workout Tuesday, Oct. 11.

Fantasy Tip: Starks could be a game-time decision for the team's Week 6 game, so owners will need to check the inactive list. Starks' value will depend on the availability of Eddie Lacy. If Starks plays and Lacy does not, he could be a No. 2 running back or a flex option. If Lacy does play, Starks would only be a flex option in deeper leagues.

Packers | James Starks does not practice

Wed, 12 Oct 2016 15:25:07 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (knee) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Oct. 12.

Fantasy Tip: The severity of Starks' injury is uncertain at this point, so owners should look for more on his status over the next day or two. Starks could be a flex option if he and Eddie Lacy plays in Week 6 but would have more value if he plays and Lacy is ruled out. Owners may want to look for other options to use.

Packers | James Starks expected to practice

Wed, 03 Aug 2016 15:16:20 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (undisclosed) is expected to participate in practice Wednesday, Aug. 3, after he missed practice Monday, Aug. 1, because of an undisclosed reason, according to head coach Mike McCarthy.

Fantasy Tip: It appears that Starks is dealing with a minor injury, but he could sit out the first preseason game as a precaution. Eddie Lacy will be the starting running back this season, but Starks should receive a solid amount of playing time and be used in the running and passing game. He should be a middle- to late-round option in most leagues.

Packers | James Starks a red-zone weapon?

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 22:43:19 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks' ability on screen passes makes him a weapon in the red zone, running backs coach Ben Sirmans said.

Fantasy Tip: Starks' ability as a pass-catcher should earn him a steady role in the offense and make him a RB3 candidate, especially in PPR formats. His value could receive a further boost if Eddie Lacy can't stay in shape and falls out favor.

Packers | Eddie Lacy must impact passing game

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 22:31:32 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy will be pushed into the passing game, according to running backs coach Ben Sirmans, but Sirmans said Lacy will have to beat man coverage. Last year, RB James Starks played 68 more snaps than Lacy and caught 27 more passes.

Fantasy Tip: Lacy's inability to stay in shape has opened the door for Starks to take on a bigger role. Both backs are RB3 candidates, but Starks is the better bet in PPR formats.

Packers | James Starks deal for two years

Fri, 18 Mar 2016 07:09:58 -0700

Updating an earlier report, Green Bay Packers RB James Starks' deal is for two years and $6 million, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Eddie Lacy appears to be on his last leg with the club, but he has reportedly trimmed down this offseason. Starks will at least split the work with Lacy entering the season, and both are a low-end RB3 in fantasy.

Fri, 18 Mar 2016 05:59:46 -0700

Free-agent RB James Starks (Packers) re-signed with the Green Bay Packers Friday, March 18, on an undisclosed contract.

Fantasy Tip: Starks returns to an unsettled situation at running back, and he could be a low-end RB3 in fantasy.

Patriots | James Starks visiting Pats

Thu, 10 Mar 2016 12:52:23 -0800

Free-agent RB James Starks (Packers) and TE Clay Harbor (Jaguars) are both visiting the New England Patriots Thursday, March 10.

Fantasy Tip: The Pats definitely need to upgrade their running back with both LeGarrette Blount and Steven Jackson likely on their way out. Starks could fit the bill as an RB2 if he's given the lion's share of the workload in New England, but given the way the Patriots typically distribute touches in their backfield, he'd probably be safer as your third back. Harbor would strictly be tight end blocking depth and doesn't deserve attention in fantasy.

Packers | Matt Forte a fit in Green Bay?

Fri, 12 Feb 2016 08:36:52 -0800

Chicago Bears impending free-agent RB Matt Forte would be an ideal fit for the Green Bay Packers, in the opinion of the Chicago Tribune's Brad Biggs. Packers RB James Starks will be a free agent, and RB Eddie Lacy had a down year in 2015.

Fantasy Tip: Forte's fantasy value would probably be more fruitful elsewhere unless the Pack heavily reduced Lacy's workload. However, Forte is a high-end RB2 in PPR leagues at worst.

Packers | James Starks could seek job elsewhere

Wed, 03 Feb 2016 21:58:23 -0800

Green Bay Packers impending free-agent RB James Starks is set to turn 30 later this month. While that is generally an age running backs see a decline, he has plenty of tread on the tires with just 555 carries in six NFL seasons. He might seek a chance at a No. 1 running back job elsewhere.

Fantasy Tip: Starks showed a lot more burst than Eddie Lacy last season, and he showed he can play at a high level for long lengths of time. He'll be an interesting player to watch heading into 2016 if he moves to another organization.

Packers | James Starks finds end zone

Sun, 10 Jan 2016 18:36:25 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks carried 12 times for 53 yards and a touchdown in the NFC Wild Card Game Sunday, Jan. 10, against the Washington Redskins. He added two receptions for 12 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Starks and Eddie Lacy split the carries right down the middle with 12 apiece. The added bonus of Starks' receiving ability, as well as his slightly lower salary, makes him the more attractive FantasyScore option heading into next weekend's playoff game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Packers | James Starks totals 11 touches

Sun, 03 Jan 2016 22:53:58 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks rushed eight times for 24 yards in the Week 17 game against the Minnesota Vikings, and he added three receptions for 18 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Starks could be an attractive mid-tier FantasyScore option for the team's road playoff game next Sunday at Washington, as he sees a decent amount of touches.

Sun, 27 Dec 2015 20:42:31 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks posted three runs for 11 yards in the Week 16 game against the Arizona Cardinals. He also had no receptions or targets.

Fantasy Tip: Nearly all of the touches in the run game went to Eddie Lacy, as Starks was nearly non-existent in the offense in this one.

Packers | James Starks does it all

Sun, 13 Dec 2015 19:04:53 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks had 11 carries for 71 yards and a touchdown and four catches for 32 yards and a score in a 28-7 win over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 14.

Fantasy Tip: Starks has been a steady contributor in the passing game, and the rushing yards were an added bonus. However, Eddie Lacy appears to be back on track, so don't expect Starks to be more than a complementary piece in the rushing attack going forward.

Packers | Both Packers RBs to remain involved

Tue, 24 Nov 2015 05:10:16 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy and RB James Starks will remain involved in the offense, according to head coach Mike McCarthy. Lacy rushed for 100 yards on 22 carries, which was his first 100-yard game of the season. "I thought Eddie played well," McCarthy said. "He was given more opportunities. He was decisive and ran behind his pads."

Fantasy Tip: Lacy was assisted by FB John Kuhn, who was used as a lead blocker on 20 of the 34 runs in Week 11. Lacy ($8,100, 16.2% of cap) will have a decent matchup against the Chicago Bears, but at a lofty FantasyScore fee. Starks ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) is at a midrange price, but Lacy clearly has the juice right now.

Packers | Eddie Lacy says he'll play

Fri, 20 Nov 2015 09:10:10 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (groin) said he'll be playing in Week 11 against the Minnesota Vikings after missing last week's game. "I felt good today. My coach said I was moving good, I was looking good," Lacy said. "It's a step in the right direction." However, head coach Mike McCarthy already said earlier this week that RB James Starks would start the game against the Minnesota Vikings, with Lacy coming in later.

Fantasy Tip: There's a chance that a healthy Lacy ($6,500, 13.0% of cap) gets into the game and outshines Starks, who was mediocre in his start last week. But paying for that to happen on FantasyScore on that price isn't worth the risk this week.

Packers | James Starks draws another start

Wed, 18 Nov 2015 11:04:14 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks will start Sunday, Nov. 22, with RB Eddie Lacy "going second," according to head coach Mike McCarthy.

Fantasy Tip: Starks ($6,600, 13.2% of cap) salvaged a poor game on the ground (2.8 yards per carry) with six catches for 54 yards last week. The Minnesota Vikings are in the top three at defending RBs the last five weeks, and Starks doesn't seem to have a lot of leeway. This might be a situation to avoid altogether in Week 11.

Packers | James Starks struggles vs. DET

Sun, 15 Nov 2015 15:06:39 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks gained just 42 yards on the ground Sunday, Nov. 15, in an 18-16 loss to the Detroit Lions.

Fantasy Tip: Starks ($6,800, 13.6% of cap) replaced Eddie Lacy as the lead running back, so this was not what Green Bay wanted to see against the 26th-ranked defense in the NFL. You may want to hold off on making him a centerpiece of your rushing attack.
