Packers | James Starks deal for two years

Fri, 18 Mar 2016 07:09:58 -0700

Updating an earlier report, Green Bay Packers RB James Starks' deal is for two years and $6 million, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Eddie Lacy appears to be on his last leg with the club, but he has reportedly trimmed down this offseason. Starks will at least split the work with Lacy entering the season, and both are a low-end RB3 in fantasy.

Fri, 18 Mar 2016 05:59:46 -0700

Free-agent RB James Starks (Packers) re-signed with the Green Bay Packers Friday, March 18, on an undisclosed contract.

Fantasy Tip: Starks returns to an unsettled situation at running back, and he could be a low-end RB3 in fantasy.

Patriots | James Starks visiting Pats

Thu, 10 Mar 2016 12:52:23 -0800

Free-agent RB James Starks (Packers) and TE Clay Harbor (Jaguars) are both visiting the New England Patriots Thursday, March 10.

Fantasy Tip: The Pats definitely need to upgrade their running back with both LeGarrette Blount and Steven Jackson likely on their way out. Starks could fit the bill as an RB2 if he's given the lion's share of the workload in New England, but given the way the Patriots typically distribute touches in their backfield, he'd probably be safer as your third back. Harbor would strictly be tight end blocking depth and doesn't deserve attention in fantasy.

Packers | Matt Forte a fit in Green Bay?

Fri, 12 Feb 2016 08:36:52 -0800

Chicago Bears impending free-agent RB Matt Forte would be an ideal fit for the Green Bay Packers, in the opinion of the Chicago Tribune's Brad Biggs. Packers RB James Starks will be a free agent, and RB Eddie Lacy had a down year in 2015.

Fantasy Tip: Forte's fantasy value would probably be more fruitful elsewhere unless the Pack heavily reduced Lacy's workload. However, Forte is a high-end RB2 in PPR leagues at worst.

Packers | James Starks could seek job elsewhere

Wed, 03 Feb 2016 21:58:23 -0800

Green Bay Packers impending free-agent RB James Starks is set to turn 30 later this month. While that is generally an age running backs see a decline, he has plenty of tread on the tires with just 555 carries in six NFL seasons. He might seek a chance at a No. 1 running back job elsewhere.

Fantasy Tip: Starks showed a lot more burst than Eddie Lacy last season, and he showed he can play at a high level for long lengths of time. He'll be an interesting player to watch heading into 2016 if he moves to another organization.

Packers | James Starks to seek starting spot

Tue, 19 Jan 2016 08:43:13 -0800

Green Bay Packers impending free-agent RB James Starks wants to find an opportunity to start.

Fantasy Tip: Starks has been good in limited windows and could be an RB3 candidate if he lands a major role elsewhere.

Packers | James Starks finds end zone

Sun, 10 Jan 2016 18:36:25 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks carried 12 times for 53 yards and a touchdown in the NFC Wild Card Game Sunday, Jan. 10, against the Washington Redskins. He added two receptions for 12 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Starks and Eddie Lacy split the carries right down the middle with 12 apiece. The added bonus of Starks' receiving ability, as well as his slightly lower salary, makes him the more attractive FantasyScore option heading into next weekend's playoff game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Packers | James Starks totals 11 touches

Sun, 03 Jan 2016 22:53:58 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks rushed eight times for 24 yards in the Week 17 game against the Minnesota Vikings, and he added three receptions for 18 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Starks could be an attractive mid-tier FantasyScore option for the team's road playoff game next Sunday at Washington, as he sees a decent amount of touches.

Packers | James Starks held in check

Sun, 27 Dec 2015 20:42:31 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks posted three runs for 11 yards in the Week 16 game against the Arizona Cardinals. He also had no receptions or targets.

Fantasy Tip: Nearly all of the touches in the run game went to Eddie Lacy, as Starks was nearly non-existent in the offense in this one.

Packers | James Starks does it all

Sun, 13 Dec 2015 19:04:53 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks had 11 carries for 71 yards and a touchdown and four catches for 32 yards and a score in a 28-7 win over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 14.

Fantasy Tip: Starks has been a steady contributor in the passing game, and the rushing yards were an added bonus. However, Eddie Lacy appears to be back on track, so don't expect Starks to be more than a complementary piece in the rushing attack going forward.

Packers | Both Packers RBs to remain involved

Tue, 24 Nov 2015 05:10:16 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy and RB James Starks will remain involved in the offense, according to head coach Mike McCarthy. Lacy rushed for 100 yards on 22 carries, which was his first 100-yard game of the season. "I thought Eddie played well," McCarthy said. "He was given more opportunities. He was decisive and ran behind his pads."

Fantasy Tip: Lacy was assisted by FB John Kuhn, who was used as a lead blocker on 20 of the 34 runs in Week 11. Lacy ($8,100, 16.2% of cap) will have a decent matchup against the Chicago Bears, but at a lofty FantasyScore fee. Starks ($5,000, 10.0% of cap) is at a midrange price, but Lacy clearly has the juice right now.

Packers | Eddie Lacy says he'll play

Fri, 20 Nov 2015 09:10:10 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (groin) said he'll be playing in Week 11 against the Minnesota Vikings after missing last week's game. "I felt good today. My coach said I was moving good, I was looking good," Lacy said. "It's a step in the right direction." However, head coach Mike McCarthy already said earlier this week that RB James Starks would start the game against the Minnesota Vikings, with Lacy coming in later.

Fantasy Tip: There's a chance that a healthy Lacy ($6,500, 13.0% of cap) gets into the game and outshines Starks, who was mediocre in his start last week. But paying for that to happen on FantasyScore on that price isn't worth the risk this week.

Packers | James Starks draws another start

Wed, 18 Nov 2015 11:04:14 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks will start Sunday, Nov. 22, with RB Eddie Lacy "going second," according to head coach Mike McCarthy.

Fantasy Tip: Starks ($6,600, 13.2% of cap) salvaged a poor game on the ground (2.8 yards per carry) with six catches for 54 yards last week. The Minnesota Vikings are in the top three at defending RBs the last five weeks, and Starks doesn't seem to have a lot of leeway. This might be a situation to avoid altogether in Week 11.

Packers | James Starks struggles vs. DET

Sun, 15 Nov 2015 15:06:39 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks gained just 42 yards on the ground Sunday, Nov. 15, in an 18-16 loss to the Detroit Lions.

Fantasy Tip: Starks ($6,800, 13.6% of cap) replaced Eddie Lacy as the lead running back, so this was not what Green Bay wanted to see against the 26th-ranked defense in the NFL. You may want to hold off on making him a centerpiece of your rushing attack.

Packers | Eddie Lacy is fine

Wed, 11 Nov 2015 09:23:53 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (groin) is expected to be a full go for the Week 10 game against the Detroit Lions, according to head coach Mike McCarthy. However, McCarthy also said that RB James Starks has become the No. 1 running back. The Packers will continue with a dual attack in the backfield.

Fantasy Tip: With the news that Starks will see the majority of the touches in the backfield now, it's official that Lacy ($6,600, 13.2% of cap) is now the biggest fantasy football bust to this point in the season. Coming off another injury, he should be left alone in all formats this weekend.

Packers | James Starks given the reins

Wed, 11 Nov 2015 08:54:31 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks was named the lead running back over RB Eddie Lacy (groin), according to head coach Mike McCarthy. "I would say James Starks is our No. 1 back right now," McCarthy said.

Fantasy Tip: Starks ($6,800, 13.6% of cap) faces a healthy matchup in Week 10 as the Detroit Lions have allowed eight rushing touchdowns the last five weeks to RBs. No other team in the league has allowed more than five during that stretch. Starks is a midrange RB2 on FantasyScore.

Packers | James Starks ready to go on SNF

Sun, 01 Nov 2015 16:36:13 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (hip) is active for the Week 8 game against the Denver Broncos. He was listed as questionable due to a hip ailment.

Fantasy Tip: Starks ($5,500, 11.0% of cap) has been the better running back in Green Bay between he and Eddie Lacy ($7,000, 14.0% of cap) lately.

Packers | Ty Montgomery, James Starks questionable

Fri, 30 Oct 2015 13:36:57 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR Ty Montgomery (ankle) and RB James Starks (hip) are listed as questionable for Week 8 against the Denver Broncos. Montgomery did not practice all week and Starks was limited the last two days in practice.

Fantasy Tip: Montgomery ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) seems unlikely to play if he hasn't practiced all week. Look to avoid him. Starks ($5,500, 11.0% of cap) is an interesting case. He's expected to at least share the workload with Eddie Lacy moving forward, but he could be a game-time decision. With the game coming Sunday night, he's a very risky selection against a top defense.

Packers | Davante Adams, James Starks limited

Thu, 29 Oct 2015 14:13:05 -0700

Green Bay Packers WR Davante Adams (ankle) and RB James Starks (hip) were limited in practice Thursday, Oct. 29.

Fantasy Tip: Starks ($5,500, 11.0% of cap) was upgraded after not practicing yesterday, so playing against the Denver Broncos Sunday night looks more probable. Adams ($4,800, 9.6%) hasn't played in a month, so if he does play he could be rusty. In addition, the Packers face one of the toughest pass defenses in the league in the Broncos. Tread carefully with Adams.

Packers | No practice for James Starks

Wed, 28 Oct 2015 13:27:48 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (hip) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Oct. 28.

Fantasy Tip: The extent of Starks' hip injury was not disclosed, so he will need to be monitored. Starks ($5,500, 11.0% of cap) has taken more than his fair share of playing time away from Eddie Lacy ($7,000, 14.0%) this year, and deservedly so. Neither are tremendous plays against the vaunted Denver defense, however.

Packers | Green Bay likely will use RB committee

Mon, 19 Oct 2015 14:11:32 -0700

Green Bay Packers RBs Eddie Lacy and James Starks likely will continue to see playing time moving forward, because head coach Mike McCarthy said he does not like having one running back run 25 times a game. McCarthy said he could stick with one running back if they are playing well during a game.

Fantasy Tip: Lacy likely will receive a majority of the carries when healthy, but Starks should also receive a solid amount of touches during games. Both should see the ball enough to be solid starting options in fantasy leagues moving forward.

Packers | Eddie Lacy banged up

Mon, 19 Oct 2015 05:45:14 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (ankle) had just four carries in the Week 6 game while RB James Starks had 10 carries for 112 yards and a touchdown. "We're a one-two punch team," coach Mike McCarthy said. "It's really no different than the way we operate. We went with James first just because he's been playing extremely well, and Eddie has been a little banged up." Though McCarthy did not expand on what exactly is bothering Lacy, it's possible the right ankle is more problematic than the team has let on. the ankle appeared to be progressing well as recently as this week, when Lacy practiced with a normal tape job for the first time. Gone was the bulky, over-the-shoe taping known as "spatting," which he wore the last three games and provides extra support for the ankle.

Fantasy Tip: The Packers are on a bye in Week 7, but these two figure to share the load for the foreseeable future. Lacy will be a fringe RB1 with Starks a midrange flex option on FantasyScore.

Packers | James Starks steps up game

Sun, 18 Oct 2015 22:57:10 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks posted the first 100-yard rushing game by a Green Bay rusher this season in Week 6 against the San Diego Chargers, finishing with 112 yards and a touchdown.

Fantasy Tip: Starks ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) was a stud for any FantasyScore players taking a chance on him, as Eddie Lacy ($7,500, 15.0% of cap) was limited by an ankle injury. With a bye week to get healthy, Lacy should be better in two weeks, shrinking the role of Starks. But if Lacy doesn't get any better, Starks could be a steal.

Packers | Eddie Lacy improving

Fri, 02 Oct 2015 11:04:34 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (ankle) is improving and feels better about this ankle injury than the one that plagued him in 2013. "It's better than that because it's not going to be a lingering thing," Lacy said Thursday. "It's going away. My rookie year, it really didn't go away." Head coach Mike McCarthy said he liked the rotation he had with Lacy, RB James Starks and RB Alonzo Harris in Week 3. Starks had 17 carries to Lacy's 10, and Harris had two.

Fantasy Tip: Lacy ($7,800, 15.6% of cap) could be limited again against the San Francisco 49ers, which makes his price tag very prohibitive on FantasyScore. Starks ($2,400, 4.8% of cap) is a good, speculative flyer in a game the Packers should be able to build a lead and run often against the struggling Niners.

Packers | James Starks totals 18 touches

Mon, 28 Sep 2015 21:52:20 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks ran 17 times for just 32 yards in the Week 3 game against the Kansas City Chiefs Monday, Sept. 28. He added one reception for 19 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Starks ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) saw plenty of touches as the Packers split carries between he and Eddie Lacy (ankle), who was returning from injury. Don't expect Starks to cut into Lacy's carries going forward as he gets healthier.

Packers | James Starks posts 106 total yards

Sun, 20 Sep 2015 22:42:04 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks carried 20 times for 95 yards in the Week 2 game against the Seattle Seahawks, and he added four receptions for 11 yards.

Fantasy Tip: Starks ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) filled in admirably once Eddie Lacy (ankle) went down in the first quarter and was unable to return. If Starks draws the start in Week 3 he is a slam-dunk FantasyScore play.

Packers | Eddie Lacy leaves practice

Tue, 04 Aug 2015 13:51:05 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (foot) left practice Tuesday, Aug. 4, with a sore foot. RB James Starks finished out practice with the top unit. No indication was given as to which foot was sore and forced Lacy from workouts.

Fantasy Tip: Lacy managed 1,139 yards and nine touchdowns last year despite some subpar outings, and his loss would put a damper on the running game. Starks and RB's Rajion Neal and Alonzo Harris are the only other rushers available. Monitor this situation and see how it develops.

Packers | Eddie Lacy bruised hip

Tue, 09 Dec 2014 07:12:46 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (hip) suffered a bruised hip late in the game Monday, Dec. 8, and RB James Starks took over on a crucial drive. Lacy said he believed he'd be fine for Sunday, Dec. 14, against the Buffalo Bills.

Fantasy Tip: Lacy ($7,400; 14.8% of your cap) could become a suspect play in Week 15 on FantasyScore. Starks ($3,000; 6.0%) ran well late in the game, and the team could scale Lacy back a bit, regardless of the severity of the hip bruise.

Packers | James Starks leads rushing attack

Mon, 08 Dec 2014 21:19:04 -0800

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks rushed for a team-high 75 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries against the Atlanta Falcons Monday, Dec. 8.

Fantasy Tip: Eddie Lacy wasn't far behind, logging 73 yards and a score on 13 carries. Starks' performance likely had more to do with Atlanta's terrible defense than an expanding role for Starks.

Packers | James Starks probable

Fri, 24 Oct 2014 14:05:01 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (ankle) was limited in practice for the second straight day Friday, Oct. 24, but is probable for Week 8 against the New Orleans Saints. The Packers didn't practice Friday, so Starks' designation is an estimation.

Fantasy Tip: Starks has been sharing carries with Eddie Lacy in the backfield. Starks has a great matchup against the Saints Sunday night, making his $3,600 (7.2% of cap) FantasyScore price enticing if you're looking for a cheap running back option.

Updating a previous report, Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (ankle) was limited in practice Thursday, Oct. 23, after not practicing Wednesday, Oct. 22.

Fantasy Tip: Starks will cost $3,600 (7.2% of cap) against the New Orleans Saints in Week 8. He has been sharing touches with Eddie Lacy recently. If Starks sees his workload decrease, Lacy ($6,300) could be a nice play against a weak Saints defense.

Packers | James Starks practicing

Thu, 23 Oct 2014 10:20:58 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (ankle) is participating in practice Thursday, Oct. 23.

Fantasy Tip: It is a good sign for his availability that he was able to get on the practice field today. Starks will cost you $3,600 (7.2% of cap) in FantasyScore this week, but that money could probably be better used elsewhere, especially if Starks is limited.

Wed, 22 Oct 2014 13:27:32 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (ankle) did not practice Wednesday, Oct. 22. Starks injured the ankle in Week 7 against the Carolina Panthers.

Fantasy Tip: Eddie Lacy will have added value if Starks is unable to go this weekend. He is priced at $6,300 on FantasyScore in a matchup with the New Orleans Saints.

Packers | James Starks injures ankle

Sun, 19 Oct 2014 18:46:18 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (ankle) left the Week 7 game against the Carolina Panthers in the third quarter due to an ankle injury and he was unable to return.

Fantasy Tip: If Starks is forced to miss time, Eddie Lacy will likely carry even more of the load as the No. 1 back. However, John Kuhn and DuJuan Harris could also see some added touches, but neither would have much appeal in FantasyScore.

Packers | More carries for James Starks?

Tue, 30 Sep 2014 17:20:23 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks did not register a carry in the team's Week 4 game, and head coach Mike McCarthy said that will change going forward. "James Starks should touch the football every single game," McCarthy said Tuesday, Sept. 30. "That will not happen again."

Fantasy Tip: Although Starks is likely to see some more touches going forward, it remains to be seen just how many carries he will take from Eddie Lacy. Even at his $3,000 salary (6% of cap) at FantasyScore, Starks isn't worth the risk in Week 5. However, the fact the Packers will make it a point to have Starks involved makes the struggling Lacy an even riskier pick until the backfield rotation becomes clearer.

Packers | Eddie Lacy won't miss extended time

Tue, 09 Sep 2014 11:23:09 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (concussion) isn't expected to miss significant time, but head coach Mike McCarthy said he'll need to be cleared by an independent neurologist before returning. RB James Starks would be the starting running back if Lacy can't return in Week 2.

Fantasy Tip: The good news is that Lacy will have over a week to recover before Week 2 against the New York Jets. However, he's no sure thing to return. Avoiding his $5,600 (11.2% of cap) FantasyScore price is smart. Starks, at $4,100 (8.2% of cap), may present a solid bargain if Lacy doesn't play.

Packers | James Starks hoping to stay healthy

Mon, 23 Jun 2014 18:23:06 -0700

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks said his main goal this year is to stay healthy. "I feel I can be pretty great," Starks said. "I don't like talking about myself too much. But I think I can be real good. If I'm healthy, I can do a lot."

Fantasy Tip: Starks has flashed an intriguing combination of power and speed in the past, but injuries have caused him to miss 31 of a possible 72 games. His injury history combined with the emergence of Eddie Lacy will make it tough for Starks to be a regular fantasy contributor this year.

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (ankle) was limited in practice Friday Dec. 27, and is probable for the team's Week 17 game.

Fantasy Tip: Lacy has been a nice fantasy football weapon most of the year and mainly in the fantasy playoffs. Even with a bum ankle, he should have room to run against the hapless Bears run D. James Starks could get extra work, but he's a flex play, at best.

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy is optimistic that RB Eddie Lacy (ankle) can return in Week 15 against the Dallas Cowboys. Lacy will be re-evaluated Friday, Dec. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Lacy probably won't be worth the risk this week, since the decision on whether he plays may not come until game time. If he doesn't go, James Starks will be the lead back and could warrant a flex play against a Dallas Cowboys defense that has been overmatched mostly all season.
