Green Bay Packers impending free-agent RB James Starks may look for a starting job in free agency but could also re-sign with the Packers if he is not able to find a better situation.
Fri, 27 Dec 2013 14:00:26 -0800
Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (ankle) was limited in practice Friday Dec. 27, and is probable for the team's Week 17 game.
Fantasy Tip: James Starks could still see a lot of work, enough to be a decent flex play in the teams Week 17 game.
Thu, 26 Dec 2013 13:49:44 -0800
Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (ankle) is expected to play in Week 17 against the Chicago Bears, according to head coach Mike McCarthy. "I feel Eddie is in good place," McCarthy said. "I expect him to play."
Fantasy Tip: Lacy has been a nice fantasy football weapon most of the year and mainly in the fantasy playoffs. Even with a bum ankle, he should have room to run against the hapless Bears run D. James Starks could get extra work, but he's a flex play, at best.
Sun, 22 Dec 2013 15:55:43 -0800
Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (ankle), who entered the Week 16 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers with an ankle injury, limped off the field in the fourth quarter with help from the training staff. RB James Starks replaced him in the backfield.
Thu, 12 Dec 2013 13:40:54 -0800
Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy is optimistic that RB Eddie Lacy (ankle) can return in Week 15 against the Dallas Cowboys. Lacy will be re-evaluated Friday, Dec. 13.
Fantasy Tip: Lacy probably won't be worth the risk this week, since the decision on whether he plays may not come until game time. If he doesn't go, James Starks will be the lead back and could warrant a flex play against a Dallas Cowboys defense that has been overmatched mostly all season.
Tue, 10 Dec 2013 23:42:31 -0800
If Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (ankle) cannot play this week, it is likely fourth-year veteran RB James Starks will play in Lacy's place. Starks has a career-high three touchdowns this season and is averaging a career-high 5.3 yards per carry but has never played against the Dallas Cowboys.
Fantasy Tip: Considering the Cowboys' defense averages close to 129 rushing yards per game, which is ranked 28th in the National Football League, Starks may be a good bet to pick up off the bench. As a previous post indicated, monitor Lacy's health but if you have a bench spot open pick Starks up as a handcuff.
Sun, 08 Dec 2013 11:37:48 -0800
Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (undisclosed) didn't start the second half. RB James Starks is in the lineup.
Fantasy Tip: He was spotted limping to the locker room at halftime. We'll keep you updated.
Fri, 22 Nov 2013 16:55:35 -0800
Green Bay Packers running backs coach Alex Van Pelt said Friday, Nov. 22, that ideally the team would like RB Eddie Lacy to handle the ball 20 times, with RB James Starks getting five carries and RB Johnathan Franklin handling the ball five times. It depends on the situation. If the game is on the line, Lacy "will be the one carrying the ball."
Fri, 08 Nov 2013 01:24:39 -0800
Green Bay Packers RB James Starks is the only player in the NFL this season to post three touchdown runs of 25 yards or longer.
Fri, 01 Nov 2013 19:22:21 -0700
Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Tom Clements mentioned using the running back with the "hot hand" when deciding between RBs Eddie Lacy and James Starks. "Well, you want to get them both work," Clements said Friday, Nov. 1. "You don't want to overload one or the other but if one has the hot hand then you stick with him. So it's not a set plan as to how that works, but they're both going to play. The line's going to block for both of them and we'd anticipate that they'd both be effective."
Fantasy Tip: This isn't the type of thing fantasy owners of either Lacy or Starks want to hear. One week their guy could be the top option, and another week it's possible he might see fewer touches if the other guys catches fire. It's a maddening situation, but Lacy remains a solid RB2 or flex play, while Starks is more of a low-end RB2 or flex option in fantasy leagues of 12 or more teams.
Tue, 29 Oct 2013 16:13:55 -0700
The Green Bay Packers would like to limit the burden on RB Eddie Lacy by giving RB James Starks more carries. Starks had seven rushes for 57 yards and a touchdown in Week 8 against the Minnesota Vikings in his first game back since suffering a partially torn medial collateral ligament in his knee last month. Lacy still finished the game with a season-high 29 carries for 94 yards and a score. "Eddie was in a groove so we stayed the way we did and obviously it worked out well," head coach Mike McCarthy said. "When James got his opportunity, I thought he jumped in there and made an impact. He was running hard, downhill, not wasting any steps. He had good reads. That's why the attempts and things like that, you look at it week to week. I would have liked to have James Starks get a few more carries."
Fantasy Tip: Starks is now worth adding off the waiver wire for running back depth or as a handcuff to Lacy. The Packers are a different team these days after losing both Randall Cobb and Jermichael Finley. Look for them to run the ball more than ever, making Lacy a must-start and Starks an option in deep leagues.

Tue, 15 Oct 2013 20:04:30 -0700
The Green Bay Packers ranked fifth in rushing yards per game (140.8), and with several wide receivers banged up, there might be more of a focus on the run game going forward. "I just think there's some growth there," head coach Mike McCarthy said Tuesday, Oct. 15. "You could see it when we got together in the spring. It was exciting once we got in pads in training camp." The Packers threw the ball 122 times in the first three games, going 1-2. In the past two games, they ran 63 times to just 62 pass attempts, winning both games. RB Eddie Lacy has run for 219 yards over the past two weeks, and RBs James Starks and Johnathan Franklin have each hit the century mark once this season.
Fantasy Tip: Lacy is the one to watch for fantasy purposes heading into the new week. He was able to shred the Baltimore Ravens for 120 rushing yards last week, averaging 5.2 yards per carry, and has emerged as a must-start RB2 or flex play in all formats. The Week 7 opponent, the Cleveland Browns, have allowed just 98.2 yards per game. However, they have given up eight rushing touchdowns, which is most in the NFL.

Wed, 02 Oct 2013 11:56:56 -0700
Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said RB James Starks (knee) will not play Week 5 because of his knee injury.
Fantasy Tip: Eddie Lacy and Johnathan Franklin likely will handle the running back duties Week 5. Lacy should be in starting fantasy lineup this week because he likely will get a majority of the playing time. Franklin should be considered a flex option this week.
Wed, 02 Oct 2013 09:48:47 -0700
Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (knee) is not participating in practice Wednesday, Oct. 2.
Tue, 01 Oct 2013 09:38:40 -0700
The Green Bay Packers may go with a combination of RBs Eddie Lacy and Johnathan Franklin in Week 5 against the Detroit Lions. RB James Starks (knee) is injured and may not suit up for the game. "I think as far as running style, it really depends on the game plan, who you are playing and how you rotate those guys in," head coach Mike McCarthy said. "Some people try to run certain schemes with certain backs. Some people play them differently based on personnel groups. Those are game plan questions."
Fantasy Tip: Lacy is a must-start, regardless. Franklin should be owned in deeper leagues and is a risky flex play, since his workload will be a mystery.
Mon, 30 Sep 2013 14:01:30 -0700
Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (knee) did not participate in practice Monday, Sept. 30.
Mon, 23 Sep 2013 15:21:12 -0700
Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (knee) underwent an MRI Monday, Sept. 23, on the knee injury he suffered during the team's Week 3 game. He said he does not think he would be able play if the team had a game Week 4.
Mon, 23 Sep 2013 07:57:35 -0700
Green Bay Packers RB Johnathan Franklin rushed 13 times for 103 yards in Week 3, while RB James Starks (knee) left the game with an injury.
Fantasy Tip: After the bye week, Eddie Lacy (concussion) should be able to return in Week 5. This will muddy the backfield situation even more. The severity of Starks' injury is unknown, but we can expect a rotation of the three for the foreseeable future.
Sun, 22 Sep 2013 11:49:10 -0700
Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (knee) left the Week 3 game with a knee injury and is questionable to return. RB Johnathan Franklin is playing in his place.
Sun, 22 Sep 2013 08:54:12 -0700
Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (concussion) has been declared inactive for the team's Week 3 game.
Fantasy Tip: James Starks was going to get the start even if Lacy was going to play, so his value will not change much. Johnathan Franklin could also receive some playing time during the game.
Thu, 19 Sep 2013 10:59:46 -0700
Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (concussion) did not practice again Thursday, Sept. 19, and he's a long shot to play in Week 3. RB James Starks will start regardless.
Fantasy Tip: It's highly unlikely that Lacy will return this week, and it may take him several more weeks to come back, depending on how he progresses. Starks will start, but he's a weak flex play in a tough matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Wed, 18 Sep 2013 11:57:19 -0700
Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said RB James Starks will be the team's starting running back for their Week 3 game.
Fantasy Tip: Starks will be starting because Eddie Lacy is dealing with a concussion. He likely will get a majority of the carries if Lacy is not able to play. He should be considered a weak No. 2 running back or a flex option this week.
Tue, 17 Sep 2013 14:13:23 -0700
Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (concussion) will be eased back into the running back picture alongside RB James Starks if he returns in Week 5 following the team's Week 4 bye. "We're going to use both backs," said offensive coordinator Tom Clements. "When Eddie's healthy he's going to get his reps and James will be ready to get his reps."
Fantasy Tip: Starks is an obvious free-agent target on waiver wires this week, especially if you own Lacy. However, his peak value probably won't last past this weekend, depending on how Lacy bounces back from his concussion. He'll be a pretty weak play when he's sharing touches with Lacy.
Tue, 17 Sep 2013 06:48:45 -0700
Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (concussion) is likely to miss Week 3 and return in Week 5, following the team's bye week. He will likely be re-evaluated Wednesday, Sept. 18.
Fantasy Tip: James Starks will likely fill in, and Johnathan Franklin is the only other healthy running back on the depth chart. Starks needs to be added in most leagues.
Sun, 15 Sep 2013 22:18:37 -0700
Green Bay Packers RB James Starks carried 20 times for 132 yards and a touchdown in the Week 2 game against the Washington Redskins, filling in nicely for the injured RB Eddie Lacy (concussion).
Fantasy Tip: Starks might have bought himself a start in Week 3 against the Cincinnati Bengals, whether Lacy is ready to return or not. He will undoubtedly be a hot pick-up off the waiver wire this week since he is the first Packers RB to hit the century mark since 2010.
Sun, 15 Sep 2013 10:26:22 -0700
Updating a previous report, Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (concussion) suffered a concussion during the team's Week 2 game.
Fantasy Tip: The severity of Lacy's concussion is not known at this time, so there is a chance he could be able to play Week 3. Owners should monitor the situation to get a better idea of how long Lacy will be out. James Starks and Johnathan Franklin could be options to start if Lacy misses time, but the team could also use a committee at running back.
Fri, 23 Aug 2013 14:09:59 -0700
Green Bay Packers RB James Starks appears to be the odd man out if the team decides to keep four running backs on their final roster. The team could look to trade Starks before the start of the season.
Mon, 19 Aug 2013 21:15:43 -0700
Green Bay Packers RB James Starks fumbled in the preseason game against the St. Louis Rams over the weekend, and he was last in the rotation of running backs behind RBs DuJuan Harris, Eddie Lacy, Johnathan Franklin and Alex Green.
Fri, 16 Aug 2013 18:59:52 -0700
Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (illness) was back at practice after dealing with a chest illness earlier in the week. His status for the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 17, against the St. Louis Rams is still unknown, however.

Wed, 14 Aug 2013 12:51:19 -0700
Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (chest) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Aug. 14, because of a chest illness. Head coach Mike McCarthy said Starks is undergoing more tests and is considered day-to-day.
Fri, 09 Aug 2013 20:22:09 -0700
Green Bay Packers RB James Starks led the team with 38 rushing yards on 12 carries in the preseason game Friday, Aug. 9, against the Arizona Cardinals. RB Alex Green checked in with seven carries for 16 yards, while RB Johnathan Franklin posted six scampers for 14 yards. RB Eddie Lacy (hamstring) did not play due to a hamstring injury, and RB DuJuan Harris (knee) was absent due to a knee.
Fantasy Tip: None of the RBs stood out, and the backfield remains a jumbled mess heading into the second preseason game. DuJuan Harris and Eddie Lacy are also in the mix, and he is expected to be the team's starter. However, there are questions whether Lacy could handle the every-down duties without frequent breathers.
Tue, 02 Jul 2013 15:26:05 -0700
Green Bay Packers RBs Eddie Lacy and Johnathan Franklin are locks to make the roster. The rookies will be joined by some combination of Alex Green, DuJuan Harris (lung), James Starks and undrafted rookie Angelo Pease. Green and Starks have received first-team reps this offseason with the rookies studying the system and Harris sidelined.
Fantasy Tip: No back besides one of the rookies should be drafted in fantasy leagues. This will be a situation to watch during the season, but it looks like Franklin might be a better draft-day value than Lacy in what should be a shared backfield that already has to work on its running game plan.
Sat, 27 Apr 2013 11:15:34 -0700
The Green Bay Packers have made RB James Starks available in a trade.
Fri, 18 Jan 2013 10:17:55 -0800
The Green Bay Packers feel the need to find a lead back heading into the 2013 season, and that man may not be on the current roster. The Packers shuffled through as many as six running backs this season and weren't satisfied with any of their options. Among the unrestricted free agents they could target this offseason include St. Louis Rams RB Steven Jackson, Miami Dolphins RB Reggie Bush, Dallas Cowboys RB Felix Jones and New York Jets RB Shonn Greene. Green Bay would likely be interested in Jackson in the secondary market because he'll be 30 this year.
The Packers had some success using RBs DuJuan Harris, Alex Green and James Starks, but only enough to occasionally draw an opponent's safety into the box. "If you're running the ball and they're closing the middle of the field and bringing an extra guy down, it obviously plays to our strengths as a pass group," running backs coach Alex Van Pelt said. "There were times when I thought we forced their hand and they had to stop it, but we'd obviously like to be more consistent and more productive from start to finish." Harris has plenty of potential, but his lack of size led him to wear down at the end. Green Bay is unlikely to take another chance with RB Cedric Benson and the team might not be willing to pay Starks $1.323 million given his injury history.
Fri, 11 Jan 2013 15:49:11 -0800
Green Bay Packers RB Alex Green, Ryan Grant, James Starks and DuJuan Harris combined for only 25 catches during the regular season. RB Cedric Benson (foot) caught 14 passes and was on pace for 44 catches this season before he was placed on Injured Reserve.
Fri, 11 Jan 2013 11:24:39 -0800
Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (knee) would have been a full participant if the team had practiced Friday, Jan. 11, and is probable for the team's playoff game.
