New York Mets manager Terry Collins said he thinks OF Lucas Duda starting at first base and 2B Daniel Murphy at second base is the team's best lineup, with OFs Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Juan Lagares and Marlon Byrd in the outfield. "You're allowed to change," Collins said. "There's nothing that's etched in stone. You're allowed to make changes and you're allowed to make decisions that you think are in the best interest of the ballclub. And last week we made decisions that we thought were in the best interest of the ballclub. They didn't work. So, as I ask our players to adjust, I've got to do the same thing." Moving Duda to first doesn't mean that 1B Ike Davis will be in the minors longer than expected, however. Davis is hitting .174 (4-for-23) with four walks and seven strikeouts with Triple-A Las Vegas in six games.
Fantasy Tip: As Duda mentions, he's familiar with first base after playing the position extensively in the minors. This doesn't change his value at all, and Collins said they can move Duda back to the outfield when they're comfortable recalling Davis. The biggest loser is Jordany Valdespin, who wasn't hitting well in his stretch of starts at second base.

The New York Mets have designated OF Rick Ankiel for assignment. The team will recall OG Kirk Nieuwenhuis from Triple-A Las Vegas to fill the roster spot.

New York Mets OF Juan Lagares will be given a two-day audition in center field over OF Rick Ankiel, but the starts are more likely to be based off of pitching matchups more than anything. Manager Terry Collins thinks that Lagares needs to lay off more pitches outside the strike zone to be effective in the majors.
Fantasy Tip: Lagares' next two starts might go a long way in determining if they send him down and recall Kirk Nieuwenhuis, who has picked it up with the bat at Triple-A Las Vegas. Nieuwenhuis could come up and challenge Ankiel for playing time in center field.

New York Mets OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis, who homered twice for Triple-A Las Vegas Tuesday, June 4, to give him eight jacks in the last 14 games, is now on the radar of manager Terry Collins to be recalled to the majors. Nieuwenhuis went 2-for-16 with a walk and eight strikeouts before being optioned to the minors April 23. Las Vegas manager Wally Backman said Nieuwenhuis' home run success hasn't been the result of hitting in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, and the outfielder has been more aggressive with two strikes. OF Rick Ankiel is 2-for-28 with 13 strikeouts recently and has been dropped to No. 8 in the hitting order. Collins also indicated that OF Juan Lagares would probably benefit from more playing time in the minors.
Fantasy Tip: It's probably only a matter of time before the Mets realize that Ankiel is hurting their offensive production. He's not the future of the organization, either. Nieuwenhuis also bats from the left side, so it'll be interested to see how playing time would shake out if he's called up. Keep Nieuwenhuis on your radar if you play in NL-only leagues.

New York Mets OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis (knee) could make the opening day roster over INF Omar Quintanilla. Nieuwenhuis returned over the weekend and is only 2-for-26 (.077) this spring. 2Bs Jordany Valdespin or Justin Turner would be counted on to play shortstop if anything were to happen to SS Ruben Tejada if Nieuwenhuis makes the roster over Valdespin.

New York Mets OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis (knee) returned to the lineup Sunday, March 24, against the Detroit Tigers and was hitless in three at-bats. Nieuwenhuis is hitting .045 this spring.

New York Mets 2B Justin Turner (ankle) received three at-bats in a minor league game and an at-bat in a Grapefruit League contest Thursday, March 21, and passed all tests with his sprained right ankle. Turner and OF Kirk Nieuwenhuis (knee) are scheduled to play in a minor league game Friday, March 22. Nieuwenhuis went 1-for-2 with three walks in a minor league game Thursday.
Fantasy Tip: Turner could see significant playing at either second or third base depending on how David Wright (intercostal) and Daniel Murphy (intercostal) progress. Turner is an NL-only commodity only.
