Mariners | Tom Wihelmsen earns first save

Thu, 23 Jul 2015 19:37:06 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Tom Wilhelmsen earned his first save of the season in a 3-2 win over the Detroit Tigers Thursday, July 23.

Fantasy Tip: The game went into extra innings, forcing Wihelmsen to close things out after closer Carson Smith pitched earlier in the game. Wihelmsen owns an unimpressive 4.45 ERA and 1.76 WHIP, so don't expect his save chances to come around very often.

Mariners | M's not overreacting on Fernando Rodney

Thu, 16 Apr 2015 10:09:17 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Fernando Rodney has had a couple of bad outings of late, including a blown save and loss against the Los Angeles Dodgers Tuesday, April 14, but manager Lloyd McClendon plans to ride out the storm with Rodney. Last year, Rodney blew just three saves in 51 attempts, but he also allowed at least one runner in 47 of 69 outings, including 34 of his 51 save chances. If McClendon chooses to go in another direction, RPs Danny Farquhar and Tom Wilhelmsen (on the disabled list) have closing experience, and RP Carson Smith has closer's stuff.

Fantasy Tip: Rodney owners should be a bit worried by his early-season struggles, especially at age 38. Rodney likely has somewhat of a long leash because of his 2014 season in Seattle, but saves poachers should be looking at Yoervis Medina and Farquhar in case Rodney continues to stumble. Smith is an intriguing bullpen arm, but he might be too far down the pecking order to matter.

Mariners | Tom Wilhelmsen loses arbitration case

Sat, 21 Feb 2015 12:04:47 -0800

The Seattle Mariners have won their arbitration case against RP Tom Wilhelmsen. He will make $1.4 million during the 2015 season instead of the $2.2 million he had requested.

Fantasy Tip: Seattle considered turning Wilhelmsen into a starter last season but it appears he will remain in the bullpen for the time being. As it stands right now, he only possesses value in deep AL-only leagues.

Mariners | Plenty of bullpen competition

Mon, 16 Feb 2015 14:55:08 -0800

Seattle Mariners RP Charlie Furbush likely will have a roster spot to open the year, as manager Lloyd McClendon wants two left-handed relievers. The other could be one of RPs Lucas Luetge, Rafael Perez or David Rollins. RPs Yoervis Medina, Danny Farquhar, Tom Wilhelmsen, Dominic Leone and Carson Smith will likely battle for the other four bullpen slots outside of RP Fernando Rodney. Ps Mark Lowe and Erasmo Ramirez are also options.

Mariners | Could consider using Tom Wilhelmsen as SP in 2014

Fri, 11 Jul 2014 16:57:29 -0700

The Seattle Mariners likely will not use RP Tom Wilhelmsen as a starting pitcher for the rest of the season but could consider using him as a starter during spring training next season, according to manager Lloyd McClendon. "I think it would awfully hard to build him this year, but certainly going into spring training, I think it's something we'll probably entertain," McClendon said. "Why not? He's 94-97 with real good sink. He's got a cutter, curveball, slider and a changeup. He's a power guy. He's got a power arm and he's flourished in the long role. He's mature enough to handle it."

Seattle Mariners RP Tom Wilhelmsen made his first major league start after 191 relief appearances for the Mariners, never pitching more than three innings in his career. He worked 2 2/3 innings, allowing two runs, one hit and three walks with three strikeouts in a 4-2 loss to the Minnesota Twins.

Mariners | Tom Wilhelmsen to start Thursday

Wed, 09 Jul 2014 15:30:29 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Tom Wilhelmsen will receive the start Thursday, July 10.

Fantasy Tip: Wilhelmsen will draw the rare spot start against the Minnesota Twins tomorrow. He has never started a game in the majors, so he probably won't be tasked to pitch that many innings.
