Pirates | Jameson Taillon flirts with no-hitter

Tue, 14 Jun 2016 20:24:55 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates rookie SP Jameson Taillon took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before it was broken up by a leadoff single from New York Mets OF Curtis Granderson on Tuesday, June 14. Taillon allowed only one other head during his eight-inning, 91-pitch masterpiece and struck out five to earn his first career win.

Fantasy Tip: Taillon settled for a no-decision after giving up three runs over six innings in his first career start against the Mets on Wednesday. The 24-year-old, who is starting in the place of the injured Gerrit Cole, is obviously making a strong case to remain in the rotation and really has nothing left to prove in the minors. Taillon will have his hands full against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday, but he is looking every bit like the top prospect he was billed to be and needs to be added in all fantasy leagues.

Mets | Neil Walker not in Tuesday lineup

Tue, 14 Jun 2016 12:57:00 -0700

New York Mets 2B Neil Walker (back) is out of the game Tuesday, June 14, against the Pittsburgh Pirates. 2B Kelly Johnson will start and hit fifth against Pirates SP Jameson Taillon.

Fantasy Tip: Between this and a .176 average in the past week, Walker might be due for a rest. Johnson is 3-for-8 with a home run against the Pirates, so he may be worth the flyer in DFS leagues.

Mets | Michael Conforto out Tuesday

Tue, 14 Jun 2016 12:53:38 -0700

New York Mets OF Michael Conforto (wrist) is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, June 14, against the Pittsburgh Pirates. OF Alejandro De Aza replaces Conforto and will lead off against Pirates SP Jameson Taillon.

Fantasy Tip: Conforto hasn't been hitting well, but the team says this is not a demotion and he is merely getting rest to let the wrist heal. De Aza, despite the leadoff spot, doesn't carry much fantasy value because his bat has been weak in the past seven days (.067 average). You may want to look elsewhere for production.

Pirates | Jameson Taillon starting Tuesday

Tue, 14 Jun 2016 11:56:18 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jameson Taillon will be recalled from Class AAA Indianapolis to start against the New York Mets Tuesday, June 14.

Fantasy Tip: It'll be Taillon's second career start, with both coming against the Mets. The prized pitching prospect allowed six hits (one homer) and three earned runs in six innings in his debut against these same Mets while walking two and fanning three. He's likely owned in the majority of leagues already. He's a risk-reward start today with plenty of upside.

Pirates | Juan Nicasio won't start Tuesday

Mon, 13 Jun 2016 14:23:39 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Juan Nicasio won't start Tuesday, June 14, against the New York Mets, according to general manager Neil Huntington, after throwing 42 pitches in a relief appearance on Friday, June 10. The team's play-by-play broadcaster, Greg Brown, guesses it could be SP Jameson Taillon who starts in his place.

Fantasy Tip: Nicasio produced one of his better starts in awhile in his last assignment, when he stifled the Mets last Tuesday over five innings, but did not fare well in a relief outing on Friday when he was hammered for six runs in just one inning of work. Given the Mets' struggles at the plate recently, Taillon could be a solid streaming option if he gets the nod, though New York just saw him a week ago in his first career start. That's definitely a variable to consider as well.

Pirates | Jameson Taillon back to minors

Thu, 09 Jun 2016 10:32:51 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jameson Taillon was optioned to Class AAA Indianapolis Thursday, June 9. RP Kyle Lobstein was recalled from the minors in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Taillon wasn't terrible but wasn't dominant in his big league debut against the Mets, allowing six hits and three earned runs while walking two and striking out three in six innings. We'll see more of him this year in Pittsburgh's rotation as one of their top pitching prospects, and he should remain stashed in deep mixed, NL-only and dynasty leagues.

Pirates | Jameson Taillon sharp in debut

Wed, 08 Jun 2016 23:57:31 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jameson Taillon allowed three earned runs, six hits and two walks with three strikeouts over six innings in a no-decision Wednesday, June 8, against the New York Mets in his major league debut.

Fantasy Tip: Taillon has overcome a lot of health obstacles to get to this point, and he is still relatively young at 24. He is worth scooping up in all NL-only fantasy leagues, some deeper mixed formats and certainly in long-term keeper play.

Pirates | Jameson Taillon not guaranteed to stick

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 10:16:39 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jameson Taillon is not guaranteed to stick in the starting rotation beyond his start against the New York Mets Wednesday, June 8, according to manager Clint Hurdle.

Fantasy Tip: Taillon is one of the top pitching prospects this year, so he should already be owned in most fantasy leagues. If he's available, snatch him up immediately. Whether Taillon sticks around likely depends on how he pitches in his big league debut Wednesday, but he's expected to be in Pittsburgh's rotation full time sooner than later.

Pirates | Jameson Taillon coming up?

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 09:56:41 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jameson Taillon is expected to be recalled to make his major league debut against the New York Mets Wednesday, June 8.

Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners have been waiting for this news for a while now. Taillon, and not Tyler Glasnow, will be the first Pirates pitching prospect to come up this year. The 24-year-old righty dealt with injuries the last two years but was dominating with Class AAA Indianapolis (2.04 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and 10.1 K/9) in 10 starts. He should be owned in all fantasy formats at this point. Will it just be a spot start tomorrow? It remains to be seen, but either way, Taillon should become a part of Pittsburgh's permanent rotation sooner than later.

Pirates | GM talks Jameson Taillon

Fri, 03 Jun 2016 15:23:47 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jameson Taillon would already be in the midst of an excellent career with the Pirates if it weren't for injuries, according to general manager Neal Huntington.

"Mechanically, he's as sound as he's been since even before we drafted him," Huntington said. "And he's been able to repeat his pitches fairly well. The consistency and the command are as good as they've been. Still some work to do, still refining some of the little things."

Fantasy Tip: It is only a matter of time before Taillon joins the Pirates, and despite what Huntington says, it doesn't appear like he has much left to fine-tune in the minors. Through nine starts with Class AAA Indianapolis, Taillon has a 1.79 ERA and a 0.79 WHIP with 54 strikeouts through 55 1/3 innings and just five walks. Taillon is a stash candidate in all but the shallowest of fantasy formats, and his promotion could come at any point now.
