White Sox | Chris Sale evolving as a pitcher

Thu, 19 May 2016 23:25:24 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP Chris Sale has become more of a pitcher than a thrower this season, and he has focused on efficiency. His average fastball has dropped from 94.5 miles per hour to 92.4, but Sale said he feels better than he ever has.

"I'm looking for efficiency," Sale said. "You can throw 100 miles an hour and punch out 12 guys. But if you're going five innings, it's a waste. I want to do everything I can to be as good as I can once a week. If I take a little off, I get more movement, and it's down in the zone, which creates more ground balls, more weak contact. I can strike him out and use five pitches. Or I can throw a couple sinkers, and he's out in two."

Fantasy Tip: His strikeout rate is down from 11.82 to 8.17, but he is 9-0 with a 1.58 ERA and a 0.72 WHIP. He has sacrificed some K's, but it's not like he's a typical pitch-to-contact guy with 62 K's in 68 1/3 innings. Clayton Kershaw and Jake Arrieta may get all of the pub, but Sale is one of the best pitchers in fantasy and a daily consideration each time he goes.

White Sox | Chris Sale remains undefeated

Thu, 19 May 2016 19:31:57 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP Chris Sale (9-0) allowed one run on four hits in a complete game victory over the Houston Astros Thursday, May 19.

Fantasy Tip: Sale threw his second consecutive complete game and became the first pitcher since 2008 to win his first nine decisions to begin a season, while lowering his ERA to 1.56. He also moved into ninth place on the club's all-time strikeout list. Sale is a must-start option in all fantasy formats and will make his next appearance against the Cleveland Indians in the second game of a doubleheader Monday, May 23.

White Sox | Chris Sale has dominated Houston

Thu, 19 May 2016 12:17:56 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP Chris Sale is 3-1 with a 0.56 ERA with two earned runs allowed, 47 strikeouts and just four walks in 32 career innings against the Houston Astros, the team he faces Thursday, May 19.

Fantasy Tip: Sale (8-0, 1.67 ERA, 0.75 WHIP) is the best pitcher in baseball so far this year and is a must-start everywhere. His strikeouts per nine innings (8.0) are down this year, but he's been more effective as a result and has been able to pitch deeper into games. Needless to say, his owners are complaining one bit.

Chicago White Sox SP Chris Sale recorded his 10th career complete game in a win over the New York Yankees Friday, May 13, allowing one run on six hits while striking out six and picking up his major-league leading eighth win of the year.

Fantasy Tip: Sale's status as a fantasy ace was never in doubt, but he is also a must-start in daily formats when he is pitching at this level.

Chicago White Sox SP Chris Sale became the first seven-game winner in 2016, allowing two runs on three hits while walking one and striking out nine against the Minnesota Twins Saturday, May 7.

Fantasy Tip: Sale has allowed just five runs over his last five starts and owns a 1.79 ERA for the year. He is an elite fantasy starter in any format.

White Sox | Chris Sale using decreased fastball velocity

Fri, 06 May 2016 19:03:48 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP Chris Sale's average fastball velocity has dipped from 94.5 mph last season to 92.3 mph this year, according to Fangraphs. However, he claimed that he is not throwing as hard on purpose, in order to get batters to make contact with his pitches so that his pitch counts can be lower as a result. "There are still times to overpower guys," Sale said. "But when you are going through a game, there's no reason to throw a 0-0 pitch as hard as you can just because you gave up a hit before that. Now you are 1-0 and now you are more mad than you were before, so you rear back and try to throw one harder."

Fantasy Tip: Entering play Friday, May 6, Sale was 6-0 with a 1.66 ERA in six starts this year, with a 0.81 WHIP and 38 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings. He is a must-start option in all fantasy formats every time he takes the mound.

White Sox | Chris Sale first to six wins

Sun, 01 May 2016 15:16:47 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP Chris Sale labored through 5 1/3 innings but minimized the damage created on five hits and four walks by only allowing one run and striking out six in a victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday, May 1.

Fantasy Tip: Thankfully for Sale's sake, his "awful" is much better than that of his counterpart on Sunday, Ubaldo Jimenez. Owners have nothing to worry about with the Chicago ace, however, as Sale has permitted no more than one run in any of his last four outings and is finally getting the run support this season that has eluded him in previous years. He's a good bet to notch his seventh win in as many tries when the White Sox host the Minnesota Twins this weekend.

White Sox | Chris Sale picks up fifth victory

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 22:50:06 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP Chris Sale allowed just one earned run, four hits and two walks with six strikeouts over eight innings in a win Tuesday, April 26, against the Toronto Blue Jays to run his record to 5-0.

Fantasy Tip: Sale remains a top fantasy pitcher, lasting at least seven innings in each of his five outings, all quality starts. He has recorded at least six strikeouts in four of his five assignments, too.

Blue Jays | Russell Martin out Tuesday

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 13:22:39 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays C Russell Martin (neck) is out once again Tuesday, April 26, against the Chicago White Sox. C Josh Thole is hitting ninth against White Sox SP Chris Sale.

Fantasy Tip: This is Martin's third straight absence. Daily league owners have an advantage because they can find out whether or not Martin will play. It isn't likely a major issue, but the team doesn't want it to turn into anything serious. Thole has a .308 (4-for-13) average in the last week and is a decent substitute in daily contests.

Blue Jays | Justin Smoak out Tuesday

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 12:39:23 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays 1B Justin Smoak is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, April 26, against the Chicago White Sox. 1B Edwin Encarnacion is batting fourth against White Sox SP Chris Sale.

Fantasy Tip: Although Smoak is batting .313 in the last week, he has a .143 average against Sale and the same average in games played at Rogers Centre. Smoak is doing fairly well as of late and deserves fantasy consideration. Encarnacion should be handled with kid gloves for the moment (.226 average, five RBIs in the last week).
