Braves | Mike Foltynewicz bounces back

Wed, 25 May 2016 21:53:14 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Foltynewicz bounced back from a poor outing in his start Wednesday, May 25, against the Milwaukee Brewers. He went 5 2/3 innings, surrendering only one run on four hits and four walks. He also had seven strikeouts in the no-decision.

Fantasy Tip: Despite an off performance his last time out, the former first-round draft pick has actually provided mostly quality work since coming up, as this was his third start in five tries in which he allowed three runs or fewer. Owners in NL-only leagues should check him out despite the fact he pitches for the worst team in baseball; he can be a nice cheap source for strikeouts, too.

Braves | Mike Foltynewicz struggles Thursday

Thu, 19 May 2016 19:10:57 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Foltynewicz (1-2) allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits over three innings in a loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates Thursday, May 19. He had no walks and one strikeout.

Fantasy Tip: Foltynewicz was unable to duplicate the success he had in his last outing against the Kansas City Royals Saturday, May 14, when he tossed eight scoreless innings. He's only worth rostering in deep NL-only seasonal leagues and should only be used in DFS when the matchup is extremely favorable.

Braves | Career night for Mike Folynewicz

Sat, 14 May 2016 19:41:05 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Foltynewicz threw a career-high eight scoreless innings in a win over the Kansas City Royals Saturday, May 14, allowing seven hits and striking out four.

Fantasy Tip: Foltynewicz has two strong outings in three starts this year, and the 24-year-old could be worth a shot in NL-only formats. Just don't expect a lot of wins from a guy playing for a terrible Atlanta squad.

Braves | Mike Foltynewicz back in action

Mon, 02 May 2016 22:31:35 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Foltynewicz allowed four earned runs, eight hits and two walks with four strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings in a loss Monday, May 2, against the New York Mets. He was out of the majors since potentially life-threatening blood clots were discovered in his right shoulder late last season.

Fantasy Tip: Foltynewicz could make additional starts, but he is only worth using in the deepest of NL-only fantasy play and DFS play when the matchup is favorable.

Braves | Mike Foltynewicz called up

Mon, 02 May 2016 10:24:42 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Foltynewicz was called up from Class AAA Gwinnett in order to start against the New York Mets to replace SP Bud Norris in the starting rotation Monday, May 2. Norris will work in long relief for now. Foltynewicz had a 2.05 ERA with 20 strikeouts, 14 walks and 12 hits allowed in 22 innings over four starts for Gwinnett.

Fantasy Tip: Outside of NL-only leagues, Folty is a guy to watch, as his strikeout upside is tempered by home run allowance and shaky command. His dominant stuff has yet to translate at the major league level, and you'll likely need to remain patient with him.

Braves | Bud Norris could be booted from rotation

Fri, 29 Apr 2016 11:36:08 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Bud Norris could be bumped from the starting rotation soon, and SP Mike Foltynewicz looks like he could be the favorite to take Norris' spot. Foltynewicz could start in Norris' spot against the New York Mets Monday, May 2. Foltynewicz was scratched from his start at Class AAA Gwinnett Friday, April 29. Norris has an 8.74 ERA in his first five starts.

Fantasy Tip: Norris has zero fantasy upside at this point and should be left to the waiver wire. Folty appears to be past his blood clot issues and had 20 K's in 22 innings for Gwinnett. However, but he also has at least four walks in three of his four outings in the minors. He has raw strikeout stuff but allows a lot of fly balls. Take a wait-and-see approach. Only add him in NL-only leagues for now if he gets the opportunity.

Braves | Who is set to join the Atlanta rotation?

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 15:46:52 -0700

Atlanta Braves SPs Mike Foltynewicz or Aaron Blair could fill the rotation opening following SP Williams Perez's demotion to Class AAA Gwinnett Wednesday, April 20. The Braves may opt to delay starting Blair's arbitration clock by turning to Foltynewicz, in the opinion of MLB.com's Braves beat writer Mark Bowman.

Fantasy Tip: Blair has more fantasy upside, but the Braves don't have any reason to rush the youngster. Foltynewicz struggled significantly last season, and he owns a 5.68 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP through 15 career starts in the majors. At this point, he is a desperation add in cavernous mixed and NL-only formats. Take a wait-and-see approach with Blair, but he would warrant a speculative add in cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues with a spot in the rotation.

Braves | Mike Foltynewicz set to join rotation?

Mon, 18 Apr 2016 15:00:20 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Foltynewicz could join the rotation as soon as this weekend, in the opinion of MLB.com's Braves beat writer Mark Bowman. "If Foltynewicz pitches effectively during Monday night's start against Durham, there's a chance he could join Atlanta's rotation during this upcoming weekend's series against the Mets. But it sounds like the Braves will wait at least one more week to promote Foltynewicz, who notched seven strikeouts over six scoreless innings against Durham last week."

Fantasy Tip: Through 15 career starts, Foltynewicz owns a 5.68 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP. He is nothing more than a desperation add in cavernous mixed and NL-only formats until he proves he can consistently limit hitters at the highest level. Williams Perez would be the likely candidate to be removed from the rotation with the promotion of Foltynewicz.

Braves | Mike Foltynewicz optioned

Wed, 30 Mar 2016 10:42:51 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Foltynewicz was optioned to Class AAA Gwinnett Wednesday, March 30, leaving SPs Jhoulys Chacin, Williams Perez and John Gant fighting for the final two starting rotation spots. Foltynewicz had an 8.31 ERA this spring in three outings, and he had only gone 3 2/3 innings in his longest start. He was behind in camp due to a blood clot issue in his arm that required a portion of his rib to be removed.

Fantasy Tip: Folty should be back in Atlanta's rotation by late April or early May when he's ready. In the meantime, there's not much to like for fantasy owners out of Chacin, Perez or Gant. Mixed leaguers should stay away.

Braves | Mike Foltynewicz a strong candidate

Tue, 22 Mar 2016 11:19:08 -0700

Atlanta Braves SP Mike Foltynewicz is a candidate for the fifth starter spot this spring after allowing two hits and a walk in 3 2/3 innings in a Grapefruit League game Tuesday, March 22, against the Houston Astros' regulars.

Fantasy Tip: Folty was unfortunate in the ERA department (5.71) last year due to inflated hit and home run rates, and his raw stuff has yet to translate to a ton of empty hacks. But if he wins the final rotation job in Atlanta, NL-only owners should take a flier on him late.
